Interior of book has an occassional spot of foxing otherwise book is free of markings or soiling. Binding is tight all tissue paper is present before illustrations with no wear to hinges. Pages are not brittle and have stayed fairly white. Book is in excellent collectible shape and comes to you in an acid free archival document bag for storage. Important Revolutionary War era source records published as a supplement to Wharton's 'Digest of the International Law of the U.S.' taken from documents issued by Presidents and Secretaries of State etc. Includes 'A Brief sketch of the life of Francis Wharton by John Bassett Moore.' Francis Wharton 1820-1889 was a Philadelphia born legal writer and educator. He graduated at Yale in 1839 was admitted to the bar in 1843 became prominent in Pennsylvania politics as a Democrat serving as assistant attorney-general in 1845. In Philadelphia he edited the North American and United States Gazette. He was professor of English history and literature at Kenyon College Gambier Ohio in 1856-1863. He took orders in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1862 and in 1863-1869 was rector of St. Paul's Church Brookline Massachusetts. In 1871-1881 he taught ecclesiastical polity and canon law in the Protestant Episcopal Theological School at Cambridge Massachusetts and at this time he lectured on the conflict of laws at Boston University. For two years he traveled in Europe and after two years in Philadelphia he went to Washington DC where he was lecturer on criminal law 1885-1886 and then professor of criminal law 1886-1888 at Columbian now George Washington University; in 1885-1888 he was solicitor or examiner of claims of the Department of State and from 1888 until his death was employed on this edition authorized by Congress of the Revolutionary Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States which superseded Jared Sparks's compilation. Scuffed and edgeworn with chip at lead of spine and with occasional text pages edgeworn; internally very good. New endpapers. Tight and decent copy of this major revision of the ordinances of this early and influential northwest Illinois city adopted hometown of U.S. Grant and briefly the lead mining capital of the world "Galena" being Latin for "lead" that was supposed to be the great hub of the Midwest until Chicago's natural topographic advantage eclipsed it. Part I "General Ordinances" spells out the nuts and bolts of this city government in great detail including designating on page 76 the appearance of the official city seal "a representation of a steamboat in the interior circle with the words 'Seal of the City of Galena Ills.' in the exterior circle" and an actual impression of that blind-embossed circular seal on the page following. This section concludes on page 101 with a "Certificate" noting the acceptance of these revised ordinances by the city council; city clerk John B. French then signs boldly in ink completing the partially-printed date of 1897 by adding June 29 and impressing the circular blind-embossed city seal once again. Part II "Special Laws and Ordinances" completes the volume. Printed in a very modest quantity this volume is rarely encountered. The Galena Gazette hardcover
