Large folded map bound-in at the front and opens to 17" x 22 1/4." It is named the New Township Railroad Map Of Minnesota and is compiled from the latest authentic sources for 1878. Identified on the map are county seats towns villages post offices and stations U. S. land offices railroads completed railroads unfinished and county boundaries. The map is in fine unused condition. The booklet is touting the resources and advantages of Minnesota to entice businesses and settlers to the area. Among the advantages offered are railroad manufacturing commercial agricultural timber lands minerals etc. as business opportunities. Much information is provided regarding lands offered for sale homestead laws payment terms etc. Also provided is information on agricultural prospects for wheat potatoes oats barley rye buckwheat cattle sheep and wool etc. Small stamp of Chicago & North-Western Railway at top of front cover else a fine copy of an informative booklet. Good plus. Contemporary nonauthorial gift inscription on inner flyleaf; binding slightly edgeworn and spine rather faded and rubbed extending slightly onto front board but internally bright and tight. Tight and sturdy third printing of this state survey first published by Redfield in 1853 -- this reissue likely occasioned by the Minnesota Territory's pending statehood which came to the fore in 1856 and was finalized in 1858. Handsome sepia-tone frontispiece titled "St. Paul" and engraved title page image titled "Falls of St. Anthony." Large 17¼" X 13 3/4" foldout map tipped to rear pastedown is bright and lovely with no fold separations or weaknesses and just mild age toning; titled "Map of Minnesota Territory" it was published by Charles DeSilver of Philadelphia in 1856. Hardcover in 3/4 re-backed leather with original spines laid on decorated with gilt devices and titling. Near Fine. A nicely restored set of these somewhat scarce state reports of the rosters and activities of the State of Minnesota in the Civil War and in the "Indian War of 1862". Both volumes are square and tight due to their restoration and re-backing. Both spines are well preserved. The textblocks are toned but complete and tightly bound with some paper restoration having been done to the endpapers. New marbled endpapers were installed in volume one. <br /> <br /> This report was commissioned by the legislature of the State of Minnesota to document the rosters and activities of the State during the period of 1861-1865. The State appointed a commission to oversee the original reports which were exhausted. A second edition was commissioned and earlier mistakes were updated. Both editions had 10000 copies.<br /> <br /> Volume two of this set is "Reports and Correspondence". These copies were owned by a family whose relatives are noted in pencil in the first and second volumes. <br /> <br /> One of the finer copies available of this relatively scarce set.
