Of great interest to the history of medicine and Rio de Janeiro.
_x000d_
Rare 1st edition of this work the only one published. It was presented to the Royal Academy of Sciences in July 1821 and was only approved for publication at the Academy"s session on 8 June 1827 five years after the author"s death. This delay had to do with the very unstable political situation which affected the functioning of the institutions particularly the absolutist reaction of 1823-1825 against the Vintist liberals. Authorisation to print the work only came during the first period of the Constitutional Charter of 1826 which brought some political tranquility.
_x000d_
The work arises partly from the author"s desire to bring together the knowledge and practices he acquired over more than thirty-five years of medical practice most of them in the populous city of Lisbon; but also from his desire to demystify the fevers of Rio de Janeiro which at the time were thought to be abundant and very contagious with observations he collected after settling in that city in 1817 especially on pages 36 to 68. He addresses the complexity and contradictions related to the treatment of fevers in medical practice describing the cases he treated the respective treatments and the use of various types of medicines such as quinine arsenic and purgatives.
_x000d_
Francisco de Melo Franco Paracatu Minas Gerais 1757 - Ubatuba São Paulo 22 July 1823 Commander of the Order of Christ was a Portuguese doctor graduated in Medicine from the University of Coimbra a pioneer in the field of childcare and one of the most important doctors in the Portuguese court of his time author of important works in the field of medicine and satirical poetry.
_x000d_
Born in Minas Gerais he was part of the Brazilian elite who travelled to Portugal to study medicine at the University of Coimbra. As usual he only served one year of this sentence continuing his studies in Coimbra from 1782 to 1786 and then settling in Lisbon where he gained a reputation as an outstanding clinician. He was appointed honorary physician to the Royal Chamber and was knighted. He became a corresponding member of the Lisbon Royal Academy of Sciences and began to collaborate regularly with that institution on matters of medicine and natural sciences.
_x000d_
In 1817 he moved to Brazil accompanying Princess Consort Maria Leopoldina of Austria on her trip to Rio de Janeiro and eventually settling in that city.
_x000d_
He is the author of a number of influential works in the field of medicine and political philosophy such as: «Tratado da educação fÃsica dos meninos para uso da nação portuguesa» the first book on paediatrics written in Portuguese and by a native of Brazil; «Elementos de Higiene ou dictames theoreticos e practicos para conservar a saude e prolongar a vida». 196015053Englewood Cliffs NJ: Prentice-Hall 1960. First edition of collection of essays from the library of Nobel Prize-winning economist Kenneth Arrow with his signature to the front free endpaper. Octavo original cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Along with Merton Miller Franco Modigliani formulated the important Modigliani–Miller theorem in corporate finance 1958. This theorem demonstrated that under certain assumptions the value of a firm is not affected by whether it is financed by equity selling shares or debt borrowing money. He was also the originator of the life-cycle hypothesis which attempts to explain the level of saving in the economy. Modigliani proposed that consumers would aim for a stable level of consumption throughout their lifetime for example by saving during their working years and spending during their retirement.
_x000d_
EN In 8º 20x14 cm. viii-119-iv pp.
_x000d_
Binding: Contemporary full calf.
_x000d_
Copy with ex-libris.
_x000d_
In Tratado de educação fysica. there are several advices given not only on the best way to raise children but also on the care that should be taken with the health of the parents. Having his first studies at the seminary of St. Joachim of Rio de Janeiro he came to Portugal where he completed his preparatory studies and later enrolled in medical school. He was accused apparently a calumny of following irreligious ideas and was thrown in prision by the Inquisition and there lay for a few years before being released. He returned to finish his studies and got his degree degree then settled in Lisbon where he developped his work for many years with great credit and profit. In 1817 by order of King João VI he was called to accompany the Archduchess Maria Leopoldina to Brazil where she was to marry the Royal Prince. He did not have the reception by the royal court that he was expecting being the entrance to the palace denied to him due to the recent events of Pernambuco that raised strong opinions against the liberal doctrines passionately defended by Mello Franco. Having lost all his fortune due to the fraud of a merchant to whom he confided his savings and the proceeds of the sale of his goods in Portugal thus all of his his resources and the wealth of his children disappeared. Broken with all these mishappens and may be affected by the change of climate he developped a fever that could not be cured by science at that time. Returning from a trip he made to the province of S. Paulo in an attempt to seek some relief in his illness when arriving to Ubatuba he recognised that the end was near and asked to be brought to land where he died in a hut on July 22 1823.
M-9-C-7 hardcover
