180627116France: L'Institut des Sciences Lettres et Arts 1806. 71 -134 pages; extracted from the Memoires de l'Institut des Sciences Lettres et Arts; French text. Set out in six 'memoires'; with a folding plate; Rumford's researches regarding experiments in heat. Sir Benjamin Count Rumford in the nobility of the Holy Roman empire Thompson 1753 - 1814 American-born & educated British royalist natural philosopher and philanthropist who left during the Revolution and who ".Once in Britain Thompson presented himself as an expert on America rather than as a refugee and became the main contact between American loyalists in England and the British government.Like Davy's Faraday's and Tyndall's Rumford's is a story of the social mobility which science could bring: the farm boy and shop assistant became the Massachusetts Yankee at the courts of Europe. He spoke well German French Spanish and Italian; he played billiards against himself and enjoyed chess; he was a good draughtsman; indifferent to literature sculpture and painting he had a great taste for landscape gardening. His daughter Countess Rumford returned to America and died in 1852. In his eloge at the Institut de France on 9 January 1815 Georges Cuvier emphasized the revolutions warfare and conflicting loyalties which had dominated Rumford's life and was mildly embarrassed by his pursuit of honours and wealth. He stressed the value of Rumford's practical inventions with their scientific basis. Later to Tyndall lecturing at the Royal Institution in 1883 Rumford's researches on the nature of heat put him firmly in the tradition leading to James Joule conservation of energy and modern thermodynamics.Brown author of the biography of Rumford places his researches on heat in their context where the implications Tyndall saw were not perceived by Rumford or his contemporaries and where the diversity and utility of his discoveries based on research rather than empiricism were most impressive. He has an important place in the origins of applied science." David Knight in the ODNB Title page with the small name-stamp of collector George R. 188531995Paris: Henry Lemoine fils 1885. 345 x 473 mm margins. On laid paper with crown watermark.

The print depicts a chamber concert from the time of King Louis XV featuring performers on the harpsichord violin cello double bass flute harp etc. before a group of well-dressed ladies and gentleman assembled in an elegant room in the home of the Countess de Saint Brisson. One of a pair of engravings the other titled "Le Bal Paré."

Browning to margins from earlier matting. Quite a strong impression. A re-issue of the second state.

Beck & Roth: Music in Prints 34. Kinsky: A History of Music in Pictures 247:1. Komma: Musik Geschichte in Bildern 402. Boucher: Catalogue de l'oeuvre de A. de Saint-Aubin 403.

"An afternoon of chamber music is being given in the palatial music room of a princely home for a gathering which may well include the king of France and his courtiers. Duclos's engraving Le Concert made after a drawing by Augustin de St Aubin in 1773 is full of musical detail even to the decoration on the walls. Numerous instruments are to be discoveredd about the room some of them in use others lying about presumably awaiting another group of performers to take over. A high-ranking personage the king Louis XV can be seen in the center attentively listening to the music while the other guests are enjoying the concert with him or are busily engaged in conversation. Can it be a trio sonata they are hearing played by flute violin and harpsichord with the violoncello duplicating the bass line in traditoinal fashion - or possibly a solo cantata with the same instruments the soprano soloist standing to the right of the violinist Both are typical "intimate" musical forms of the day which were especially cultivated in such aristocratic surroundings. The gentleman standing close to the keyboard is the inevitable page turner and there appear to be two conscientious score readers one in the foreground and the other before the window directly behind. A close look at the idle instruments will reveal besides the harp a violin and oboe on the long music stand behind the honored guest and a violoncello and a bassoon placed against the chair on which he is leaning. A bass viol double bass with long neck and beautifully carved scroll is clearly visible to the left of the music stand the bow tucked in under its strings.

This engraving dedicated to the Countess of Brisson is interesting not only as a costume piece and vivid picture of elegant society under Louis XV but also as an important record of the musical life of the day." 188926938Osaka Japan: Aoki Szandow 1889. C. 120 pages; most of which have an illustration and sometimes two. Text in Japanese; titles given in English. Colin Franklin in 'Exploring Japanese Books and Scrolls' calls these publications an "appealing series of guides As travel within Japan had been restricted for three centuries and travel abroad forbidden these represented the new freedom. They combine charm with taste and a fine vagueness about that obsession of modern publishers "the market." As book-production they jump into more popular format with color-printed pictures over boards to bind themwith English captions erratic and fearless the many hundred illustrations which adorn the Japanese text.were they for the tour-guide to show his visitor - or in the world for Japanese travelers to show their guides Neither of these perhaps just a venture over the border into Western habit. They are excellent little books to leaf throughTechnically too they joined West with East. A new method was used for illustration: relief metal-cut like white-line wood engraving - Bewick's technique - difficult and delicate to manage practical in Japan for just a few years in the last quarter of the century. Paper suitable for such fine-line reproduction smooth machine-made was folded at the fore-edges in the traditional Japanese way. End-leaves and all edges were marbled an innovation for which as has been mentioned these books are now admired by collectors in JapanThey providetempting glimpses of all manner of scene and aspect of life on the eve of change" This is one volume of the 7-volume series. Approx. 4" x 6" size; bound in illustrated paper covered boards; cloth spine marbled endpapers all edges marbled. Some edge tips wear to the binding; contents in very good condition. . First Edition.
