A silver print photograph is tipped in following the dedication page: a portrait by Pirie MacDonald "Photographer-of-Men" New York of Captain James Regan of the 30th Infantry with a facsimile signature beneath. The Company was in fact a Training Camp for "Businessmen" who wanted to experience the rigors and discipline of military training; most of them were older than the average soldier. Laid in and producing offset tanning to endpapers is a taget card from the Bay State School of Musketry Boston Small Bore Rifle Range. A central figure Dutch figure with mustache and lengthy hair wearing a cross sits in an architectural setting surrounded by a garland of sea scallops pearls a crab flanked by Justice on one side she is blindfolded and holding a sword in one hand and scales in the other and another woman representing Christianity holding a cross. The figures above echo the spiritual and temporal themes; there are also three small scenes below the central figure; cupid a stag hunting scene and a monk with a balky horse. Four armorial helmets top a heraldic shield with cross miter Swan on top with markings of a castle sword through the center and a crown above with addition image of three-scallops in center piece flanked by two putti one holding an oyster shell with a string of pearls. This finely executed engraving is not signed or otherwise identified by its artist possibly trimmed. Three small "S" red-stamps along lower boarder. ca.1660-1740. unknown books

His clientele dressed in ostentatious costume look on as he points of the merits of his wares: "There is not such dignified Beef in the Market - believe me Right Honorable every Inch of it; Coronets marked in the fat and Genealogy in the lean - had it pon Honor - from my Lord cram Bullock - delicious! - you may smell the Oil Cake a mile - no vulgar ingredients - only half a Crown per pound - a mere trifle - I have indeed some low bred beef at Sixpence but I am sue Sir it would not suit your refined Taste."
