18462556West Point NY 1846. Cream paper creased. Good. 25.5 x 19 cm. Margaret Stebbins Scammon writes her brother from West Point where her husband E. Parker Scammon is an officer with the United Army Corps of Topographic Engineers. Parker would later command the 23rd Ohio Regiment during the Civil War.

Good Friday Morn. 1846

My Dearest brother

Parker fully intended to cover this envelope to you but as he was about doing it the Quartermaster must needs send for him to come to the Library for some important briefings: and so he begs me to write for him and apologize to the best of my ability for the non-appearance of your beer. You must have thought him very neglectful and tho' it is rather an awkward task I will tell you the whole truth. If you will have patience to wait till the end of this month it shall then be forthcoming. He expected to order it on the 1st but our cook took it into his head to go back to the city to live and as we had at his own request kept back the quarter part of his wages for 18 months you must know our last month's pay went with a rush and as we are so involved on every side we wont borrow and therefore all parties ourselves included must wait till after another visit from the Paymaster for our good beer. I have thus most frankly stated to you the case and I hope you will excuse it. We remember that we are still considerably in your debt so that it is with great pleasure that P. will attend to your order just so soon as circumstances will permit. I think the value of the empty half barrels returned is $1.50 each and they quite well have them as money. They are returned at any time and credited to sender.

We are looking forward to your visit in June or July with impatience. Do not disappoint us.

Your very aft sister

Margaret

The letter is addressed to Margaret's brother - Mr. John B. Stebbins Care of Homer Foote & Co. We know the merchant her brother worked for Homer Foote had become a very wealthy retailer in Springfield and assume that John B. was successful as well.
Letter has some foxing and tears in areas where there is creasing. For this he secured resources and funding by promising economic returns from properly mapping the terrain for future railroad construction locating more fertilizer sources and revealing the existence of valuable mineral deposits. The same year he left Baltimore to become the state geologist and director of the Virginian Geological Survey; he was also appointed professor of natural philosophy and geology at the University of Virginia. His efforts with the Geological Survey from 1835 until 1842 provided the data for his most important geological publicationsDespite his exhaustive efforts after 1837 the Virginia legislature responded to a drop in public revenues by cutting funding and more closely scrutinizing the survey finally terminating support for the project altogether in 1841. Rogers was unable to persuade them to continue funding beyond 1842. As a result few copies of Rogers's six annual reports were printed and a final report was never published. The reports were not even combined into a single publication until Jed Hotchkiss compiled and published them with a map in 1884. .an illustrious career during which he received many honors and awards." including founding and becoming the first president of M.I.T. Very good condition.

Signature album kept by young woman Virgina Holby during the end of the 1857 school year. All of the inscriptions are dated to June 1857 as the academic year was coming to a close and students were dispersing for the summer. Virginia's classmates affectionately address her as "Jennie" throughout the album and while some write poetic verses such as "Forget me not Forget me never till yonder sun shall set forever" others leave a simple "good bye" or requests to "Write me first would you." Jennie's classmates signed their names along with their respective hometowns--some places hundreds of miles away from Walnut Hill--in Illinois or western Kentucky. At this time in the southern United States it was not uncommon for girls and young women from wealthier classes to be sent away to private institutions modeled after the English finishing school. Secondary and higher education became a symbol of class as poor or working class people could not afford this training. An album of quotes and well-wishes amongst female classmates in June 1857 as they were dispersing for the summer months. unknown books
