19045847Milford Del: The Club; Printed at the Caulk Press 1904. Octavo 23.25 x 16 cm. 134 pages. Advertisements. Errata list tipped in. Chairman from Introduction page 17. Date of publication determined from internal evidence. ~ Evident first edition. A community cookbook undertaken by a recently formed women's social activist club; with more than four hundred attributed recipes. Entries whose details hold promise: Corned Shad Celeried Oysters Creamed Dried Beef Glazed Sweet Potatoes Succotash requiring one third more corn than beans Delaware Biscuits Potato Rolls Crab Salad Moonshine Pudding Frozen Cherry Custard Quince and Pear Marmalade Preserved Cantaloupe Rind Peach Wine Homemade Hoarhound. ~ Encoded in the title is a sort of hybrid of local pride and patriotic fervor: the Delaware Blue Hen is a traditional landrace analogous to a cultivar - that is not a breed but rather a stock variety - whose origins are alleged to date to the Revolutionary Era. A perennial symbol of tenacity it would be adopted in 1939 as Delaware's state bird. A prefatory note page 18 provides one clue to the date of publication in a reference to the "six years and more of the existence of the Club" which "was organized February 14th 1898." Confirmation is supplied on page 8 by an advertisement for Walter Pardoe's furniture store which brackets its years of service to the community as 1877-1904. ~ Mary Louise Donnell Mrs. George William Marshall 1853-1933 married into a prominent family of physicians who were instrumental in establishing the first hospital in Milford and in codifying its emergency care. She served as president of the Delaware State Federation of Women's Clubs during the first decade of the last century thereby energizing the membership of the Milford Club through her connections across the state and her engagement of speakers on subjects as wide-ranging as agriculture and nutrition. ~ The Milford New Century Club took its name from one of the earliest documented women's clubs founded in the United States the New Century Club in Philadelphia organized as a direct result of interest in the Women's Pavilion of the Centennial Exposition. In its wake social activists found common cause in promoting vocational training for women reforms in public education and child labor laws and women's suffrage. Women of the Milford New Century Club set about raising funds to purchase a schoolhouse known as the Classical Academy - which George Marshall had attended - for use as their meeting house. Thanks in part to the success of The Blue Hen's Chicken's Cook Book they completed the purchase in 1905. ~ The clubhouse was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Almost exactly thirty years later in 2012 the building was gravely damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Amidst the tumult that followed a Milford couple arranged to purchase and restore it through procurement of grants from the National Park Service. The building was rededicated in June 2015. ~ Some age-toning especially at the edges. In publisher's yellow cloth rubbed and soiled with lettering and an image of hen and chicks in blue. Ink signature of collector Eloise Schofield to front flyleaf and with her embossed "ex libris" on title page. Scarce. OCLC locates one copy of the first edition and seven copies of the second edition printed by Milford Publishing in 1921; Cook page 48 with different pagination; Bitting pages 520-521; and Brown 399 both acknowledge the second edition only; not in Cagle. Tyrone Power Maureen O'Hara Laird Cregar Thomas Mitchell George Sanders Anthony Quinn dir: Henry King; Twentieth Century Fox. None other than Ben Hecht and Seton I. Miller wrote the screenplay which brought Rafael Sabatino's swashbuckling pirate tale to the Technicolor screen. For the most part though the writers used the title and wrote an original story. Set in Jamaica there was second unit footage from that country Mexico Cuba Honduras and Florida but most of the filming took place on Stage 6 of the Twentieth Century Fox lot. The movie ran afoul with the Breen office when they saw that the main characters played by Power and O'Hara commit suicide at the end; a new ending had to be filmed. With the eye-popping Technicolor which set Fox apart during this time score by Alfred Newman and beautiful stars this was one of the finest of the romantic swashbucklers. In this card are Maureen O'Hara as the kidnapped-yet-feisty Lady Margaret Denby and her captor Jaime Waring as played by Tyrone Power FINE. unknown books

Occasional pencil notations and markings correct the printed acreage estimates of some lots. The Chaplins were members of the upper gentry and influential landowners in Lincolnshire. When the Louth Navigation -- a canal running from Louth in Lincolnshire to Tetney Haven at the mouth of the Humber -- was completed in 1770 Charles Chaplin managed to secure a 99 year lease of the tolls despite the terms of the canal's Act of Parliament limiting such leases to just seven years. The Louth Navigation Trust per the Louth Canal website notes that control and management of the tolls became "virtually hereditary" and led to considerable commercial opposition to the Chaplins and their political influence by the 1820s. The catalog includes columns for "Names of Plots &c."; "Acres by Estimation"; "State of Land"; and "Occupiers." Anyone wishing to view the premises is encouraged to apply to one Mr. J. Boucher: Catalogue de l'oeuvre de A. de Saint-Aubin 403. <br/><br/>"An afternoon of chamber music is being given in the palatial music room of a princely home for a gathering which may well include the king of France and his courtiers. Duclos's engraving Le Concert made after a drawing by Augustin de St Aubin in 1773 is full of musical detail even to the decoration on the walls. Numerous instruments are to be discoveredd about the room some of them in use others lying about presumably awaiting another group of performers to take over. A high-ranking personage the king Louis XV can be seen in the center attentively listening to the music while the other guests are enjoying the concert with him or are busily engaged in conversation. Can it be a trio sonata they are hearing played by flute violin and harpsichord with the violoncello duplicating the bass line in traditoinal fashion - or possibly a solo cantata with the same instruments the soprano soloist standing to the right of the violinist Both are typical "intimate" musical forms of the day which were especially cultivated in such aristocratic surroundings. The gentleman standing close to the keyboard is the inevitable page turner and there appear to be two conscientious score readers one in the foreground and the other before the window directly behind. A close look at the idle instruments will reveal besides the harp a violin and oboe on the long music stand behind the honored guest and a violoncello and a bassoon placed against the chair on which he is leaning. A bass viol double bass with long neck and beautifully carved scroll is clearly visible to the left of the music stand the bow tucked in under its strings. <br/><br/>This engraving dedicated to the Countess of Brisson is interesting not only as a costume piece and vivid picture of elegant society under Louis XV but also as an important record of the musical life of the day." 188926938Osaka Japan: Aoki Szandow 1889. C. 120 pages; most of which have an illustration and sometimes two. Text in Japanese; titles given in English. Colin Franklin in 'Exploring Japanese Books and Scrolls' calls these publications an "appealing series of guides As travel within Japan had been restricted for three centuries and travel abroad forbidden these represented the new freedom. They combine charm with taste and a fine vagueness about that obsession of modern publishers "the market." As book-production they jump into more popular format with color-printed pictures over boards to bind themwith English captions erratic and fearless the many hundred illustrations which adorn the Japanese text.were they for the tour-guide to show his visitor - or in the world for Japanese travelers to show their guides Neither of these perhaps just a venture over the border into Western habit. They are excellent little books to leaf throughTechnically too they joined West with East. A new method was used for illustration: relief metal-cut like white-line wood engraving - Bewick's technique - difficult and delicate to manage practical in Japan for just a few years in the last quarter of the century. Paper suitable for such fine-line reproduction smooth machine-made was folded at the fore-edges in the traditional Japanese way. End-leaves and all edges were marbled an innovation for which as has been mentioned these books are now admired by collectors in JapanThey providetempting glimpses of all manner of scene and aspect of life on the eve of change" This is one volume of the 7-volume series.
