Cloth bound, 4to., 140 pp. text, 159 plates and ills. (18 in color). ISBN 9070288621. Judith Leyster's compelling oeuvre covers a wide range of interests: genre, still-life and portrait paintings; botanical drawings in watercolor and silverpoint; and at least one etching. Her work ranges from modest pieces to the iconographically complex. This is the first book on Leyster. The main text contains three chapters: her life, her painting and her critical fortune. Then the catalogue raisonne, a list of forty relevant documents, and a household inventory. Finally there is a bibliography and three indexes. The catalogue raisonne includes forty-eight authentic known works; seven problem pieces; twelve lost works, known only from 17th and 18th century descriptions; and eighteen misattributed works. 64 pages. In small communities throughout the western world, from the 1880s until the development of the hand-held camera in the twentieth century, the town portrait photographer was the chronicler of his time. Duncan Donovan (1857-1933) of Alexandria, Glengarry County, Ontario, was typical. He portrayed the ceremonial events of life from birth to death, and the stages in between. Author has chosen the most appealing of Donovan's photographs from the plates that have survived. Presents life in a small Ontario town and its environs in the early 20th century. Unmarked. Light wear to edges of dust jacket. Excellent copy. Book
