18-2389Pont-à -Mousson: Haguenthal 1870-1900. Color broadside Bilderbogen 8.5†x 11.5â€. Good. Some loss on bottom right corner repaired with tape on verso. Some wrinkling. Text in French.Originally conceived in 1796 by Jean-Charles Pellerin in his native village of Épinal Vosges the images d'Épinal were inexpensive woodcuts and lithographs of religious and historical content intended for the commonconsumer. During the Napoleonic wars these images became extremely popular as Pellerin's printing house Imagerie d'Épinal cornered the market on commemorative historical prints. During the Great War the traditional style of these prints appealed to French artists looking to show their patriotism as in the eyes of an increasingly anti-German public the image d'Épinal came to represent a distinctly French product unmarred by foreign influence. The prints had a further appeal in that their minimalist form allowed many artists to stay true to the modernist ideals of their time. Pont-à-Mousson: Haguenthal, [1870-1900]. unknown

It is a milestone in the mapping of the American West. Wheat Here in the rarest and most desirable form with the plates and maps in a quarto atlas.

Pike's narrative along with that of Long and Lewis and Clark is one of the most significant early books on the exploration of the American West. As such it is a cornerstone of Western Americana. In particular Streeter felt its "description of Texas is excellent." Hill gives the following summary of its contents: "In 1805 Pike was given the difficult assignment of conducting a reconnaissance of the upper Mississippi region. He was ordered to explore the headwaters of that river to purchase sites from the Indians for further military posts and to bring a few influential chiefs back to St. Louis for talks. The trip was only moderately successful as a mission to the tribes but Pike was able to convey important geographical information to President Jefferson and other Washington officials. On Pike's second expedition 1806-1807 he was assigned to explore the headwaters of the Arkansas River then proceed south and descend the Red River from its source. Pike and his men were taken into custody by a Spanish patrol and Pike was able to observe many areas in New Mexico Chihuahua and Texas. His book created interest in the Southwest and stimulated the expansionist movement in Texas." The atlas volume consists of the following maps plus three tables: 1. "Falls of St. Anthony." 2. "Map of the Mississippi River from its Source to the Mouth of the Missouri laid down from the notes of Lieutn Z. M. Pike by Anthony Nau. Reduced and Corrected by Astronomical observations of Mr. Thompson at its source; and of Captn. M. Lewis where it receives the waters of the Missouri." 3. "The First Part of Captn. The outlines are from the Sketches of but corrected and improved by Captain Zebulon M. Pike who was conducted through that Country in the year 1807 by Order of the Commandant General of those Provinces." 5. "A Chart of the Internal Part of Louisiana. Including all hitherto unexplored Countries lying between the River La Platte of the Missouri on the N: and the Red River on the S: the Mississippi East and the Mountains of Mexico West; with a part of New Mexico and the Province of Texas. The present Serenade was composed in 1912. "Bantock's compositional output was prodigious and from the turn of the 20th century to his death in 1946 he poured out apparently effortlessly orchestral and choral works piano and chamber music compositions for brass band and hundreds of songs. .Gradually Bantock's music passed out of fashion for reasons easily understood: Bantock was strongly influenced by Wagner and Richard Strauss but failed to find a consistently distinctive musical language of his own. He never adopted the advanced harmonic idiom of Tristan let alone Salome or Elektra. His harmonic style suggests rather such works as Der fliegende Holländer and Guntram. It is based on common chords and diatonic discords; the complex chromatic suspensions of Tristan are outside its scope as is the dissonant counterpoint of Strauss's more advanced works. His obsession with pseudo-eastern subjects was also a handicap since it was the theatrical east of magnificent processions the gigantic and the gaudy that attracted him; and although he travelled to several Asian countries the subtlety and restraint of oriental thought escaped him." "The new simplicity and American quality of Copland's Billy the Kid 1936 set a pattern which many American composers including Carter would follow in the next decade. Carter's simplified style appears in the First Symphony 1942 rev. 1954 . and the Holiday Overture 1944 rev. 1961 which begins like Piston and ends like Ives; typically both works were considered difficult despite Carter's effort to write in the populist manner. . First Edition. The present work premiered in the original trio version in Paris by the Ars Nova Trio on 21 January 1930. "Georges Migot the French painter engraver poet philosopher aesthete and composer remains little known in today's musical world. His music was performed a good deal and his talent duly appreciated in the period between the wars. After the Second World War however his work like that of numerous other so-called independent creators fell into neglect. Though unique Migot was certainly no musical pariah. The composer was an active and highly acclaimed participant in French musical life who at around the time the Trio was composed became president of "La Spirale" an influential Parisian concert society dedicated to offering performances of newly-composed French and international works. The stylistically unified Livre des danceries for flute violin and piano is clearly indebted to this aesthetic. Written in 1929 three of its four movements were dedicated to the members of the "Ars Nova" Trio Jan Merry flute; Colette Franz violin; and Elen Merry piano which premiered the work in early 1930." "Following the resounding success of Evocations Jacques Rouché then director of the Théâtre des Arts asked Roussel to write the ballet score Le festin de l'araignée 1913. This was so successful that Rouché newly appointed director of the Opéra next commissioned an opera from Roussel to inaugurate his term of office there. Though he was touched by the successive waves of impressionism and neo-classicism in French music Roussel was an independent figure his music harmonically spiced and rhythmically vigorous."
