1st edition. Later cloth, 12mo, 307, 55. In English, Hebrew and German. Singerman 1949, Goldman 53. The original two volumes of the Minhag America prayer book had both been published in 1857, one with Hebrew-English text (Prayer Book for Public and Private Worship) and the other with Hebrew-German text (Gebet-Buch fur den offentlichen Gottesdienst und die Privat-Andacht). In the 1860s, he took the project up again, issuing a three volume series of his Minhag Amerikathe American Traditionwith the present volume for Yom Kipur (The Day of Atonement), as well as a volume for Rosh HaShanah (the Jewish New year) and a combined Jewish Hymnal and Psalter, all shaped by his view of Reform Judaism in America. This volume thus represents one of the first Reform prayer books for the High Holidays in the United States. Some of the prayers are translated both into English and German. Wise, was a pioneer of Reform Judaism in America and became its acknowledged leader and its institutional architect, organizing the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (1873) , the Hebrew Union College (1875) , and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (1889) . The reforms that he instituted sought to change or adapt Judaism to 19th century America. He was also an organizer and mover in the establishment of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, in 1889. Elected its president, he served until he died. Wise believed in uniting American Jewry and hoped to publish a new American reform prayer book titled "Minhag America. The Machzor presented here is part of this project. (See: Goldman 44). Ex-library with usual marks, shows some old damp damage with a bit of waviness to paper and the boards a little bowed, but fully usable and clean in the text. About Good- Condition (KH-5-48DB)

FT) Clothbound. 8vo. XX, 208 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In German. Three volumes in one. Half leather and cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Title translates as: Words of God, or liturgical presentation; Sermons and lectures in the synagogue at Frankfort-on-the-Oder. Samuel Holdheim (1806-1860) , a renowned extreme reform Rabbi, starting his Rabbinical career in 1936 at the synagogue at Frankfort-on-the-Oder, where these sermons were conducted. The Jewish Encylopedia relates his career and ideas during this period of writing thus: Here he remained until 1840, encountering many difficulties, due both to the distrust of those within the congregation who suspected the piety of a rabbi able to speak grammatical German, and who was a graduate of a German university, and to the peculiar legislation which in Prussia under Frederick William III. Regulated the status of the Jewish congregations. To bring about a change in this state of affairs was the purpose of Holdheim. In the preface to his "Gottesdienstliche Vorträge" (Frankfort-on-the-Oder, 1839) he appealed both to the government to accord the modern rabbinate the dignity due to it, and to the congregations to cease regarding the rabbi as an expert in Jewish casuistics mainly charged with the duty of answering "she'elot" (ritual questions) and inquiries concerning dietary laws. He insisted upon the recognition of the rabbi as preacher and teacher, who at the same time gives attention to the practical requirements of his office as the expert in Talmudical law. While in Frankfort, Holdheim scrupulously decided every question according to the Halakah. In his pulpit discourses belonging to this period the intention is plain to steer clear of mere rationalistic moralizing, on the one hand, and dry legalizing and unscientific speculation (in the style of the old "derashah") , on the other. Holdheim thus deserves to be remembered as one of the pioneers in the field of modern Jewish Homiletics, who showed what use should be made of the Midrashim and other Jewish writings. He also repeatedly took pains to arouse his congregation to help carry out Geiger's and Philippson's project of founding a Jewish theological faculty. Judaism even then had ceased for Holdheim to be an end unto itself. He had begun to view it as a force in the larger life of humanity. Subjects: Jewish sermons, German. Jews -- Poland -- Slubice. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original sheet music. Folio. (35 x 25 cm). In Ottoman script. [4] p., scores. [SHEET MUSIC] Sedarabân Mürebb' Zincir ikâ'inda. Darü'l-Elhan Külliyati No. 1. Darülelhan (The House of Melodies) is not a real publishinghouse but a music school established at 10 January 1917, in Istanbul. The principle aim in the establishment of this school was to follow a scientific way in the education and teaching of musical arts, and introduce the old pieces by printing them. Some courses on Turkish and Western music should be given in a course of four years. This school closed in the days of Independence War and reopened by the attempts of Haydar Beg the mayor of Istanbul in 1923. On this publications, it's written usually "Our establishment started to publish the beautiful pieces inhereted from the most famous Turkish composers in order to conserve them. These publications are checked by a scientifically responsible council and found ass quite correct. Up to now, the pieces contining Setarabân, Mâye, Evç-ârâ, Acem Asirân, Müste'ar, Nevâ, Gulizâr, Beyâti, Mâhur, Ferâhfezâ, Ferâhnâk, Nev-eser, Nühüft and Arazbâr Buselik tones, havng the number 72 have already been put on sale for 5 Kurus at the magazine of Samli Iskender in Bayezid Square". (Source: Music publications from Ottoman Empire up to today, 1876-1986.; ALANER, BÜLENT). Haci Sadullah Aga was a composer and performer. He was the son of Hafiz Kerim Efendi, one of the muezzins of Fatih Mosque, and was one of the greatest composers of the reign of Sultan Selim III. In some sources, the information regarding his life have been jumbled together with other namesake composers of his era. Some of his works may have been confused with those of other namesake composers. Therefore, information regarding his life is not precise. As far as it is known, after his first education, he was accepted to Enderun Mektebi (The Palace School in which the devshirmeh [T.N. selected for the army] children were educated) and he was educated in literature and history and gained skill in javelin, Indian club and horse riding. He had served in the Russo-Turkish War in 1767. It is said that he received great attention from Selim III because he had a beautiful voice and he was a master singer (vocalist) and that he was the head of the fasil committee of the sultan for some time. Sadullah Aga, who is accepted as the most powerful composer of the school of Selim III, was also the 'musahib' (talk friend) of the sultan and later he became the head 'musahib'. He was an eloquent and cheerful person with a nice personality. He served as a music teacher at Enderun and served at the Palace during the reign of Mahmud II. Sadullah Agha followed the footsteps of Itrî and under the influence of Itrî he had integrated lyricism to his compositions, which are considered to be among the greatest pieces of the classical repertoire. He developed a style that is pertinent to classical rules but is more lyrical. His influence on all composers of his period can be seen. Around thirty works of Haci Sadullah Aga, who had composed hundreds of works, has reached the present day. Compositions and 'semaî' are dominant among these works. All of these works are secular and mostly literal works. His works contain a high level of lyricism and musicality. Especially all of his works that formed the 'Bayati-Araban' set are among the most beautiful examples of the classical music repertoire. Sadullah Aga, who is among the elite composers of Classical Turkish music, lived his last years by secluding to the residence given to him seven years before his death by the sultan and died at the age of seventy eight. He has many great songs in various tones. Darülelhan published 121 scores before 1928, this is the first one. Özege 3585. Not in OCLC. Extremely rare.
148 p. + Frontis portrait of Muir engraved by John Scoles. 8vo. 210 mm. Early Henry family autograph ownership. ExLib stamp of the Lancaster Mechanic's Society. Age stain, but still good. Thomas Muir [the Younger of Huntershill](1765-1799) was a Scottish political reformer. As a student he embraced controversy, and he soon developed a reputation as a lawyer who was willing to appear in court on behalf of poor clients who could not afford to pay a fee and was a fierce critic of a legal system that he believed was biased in favor of the rich. As a young Whig he helped form Friends of the People branches were formed throughout Scotland. Muir was arrested January, 1793, and charged with sedition. After being interrogated for several hours he was released on bail. Muir now traveled to London where he had talks with other leaders of the Friends of the People. The leaders of the movement were concerned about the violence taking place in France. Muir agreed to go to France and join Tom Paine in his attempts to persuade the leaders of the revolution to abandon the plan to execute Louis XVI. Muir was unsuccessful and after having talks with the Girondist leaders, he returned to Scotland, and was promptly arrested. Edinburgh he was tried for sedition before Lord Braxfield and a hand-picked jury of anti-reformers. Muir was found guilty and sentenced to fourteen years' transportation. Afraid that Scottish reformers would attempt to rescue Muir, he was quickly removed to London. Radicals in the House of Commons immediately began a campaign to save the men now being described as the Scottish Martyrs. Attempts to stop the men being transported failed and in May 1794, the ship Surprise left Portsmouth and began its 13,000 mile journey to Botany Bay. The men arrived on 25th October to join the Colony of 1,908 convicts. As a political prisoner, Muir was given more freedom than most convicts and he was allowed to buy a small farm close to Sydney Cove. After two years at Port Jackson, New South Wales, Thomas Muir escaped with the help of Francis Peron, the chief mate of the American ship, the Otter of Boston. Muir reached Vancouver Island but after being offered help by a Spanish captain, he was arrested and taken on board the Ninfa. While on the way to Cadiz the Ninfa was attacked by the British warship Irresistible. During the battle Thomas Muir was hit by a glancing blow from a cannonball which smashed his left cheekbone and seriously injured both his eyes. For several days Muir's condition was so bad he was expected to die. When the French government heard about what had happened to Muir they tried to persuade the Spanish authorities to release him. The Spanish eventually agreed and Muir arrived in Bordeaux in November 1797. Muir joined up with Tom Paine in Paris where they continued the fight for parliamentary reform in Britain. However, Muir had never fully recovered from the wound he received on the Ninfa and his health began to deteriorate at the end of 1798. He was taken to Chantilly where he died on 26th January, 1799.
