On y rapporte ce qui s'est fait en France et à Rome touchant la Pragmatique et le Concordat et l'histoire des Conciles de Pise et de Latran. La seconde partie contient l'histoire de la naissance et du progrès du Schisme de Luther et des sectes qu'il a produites, jusqu'à la convocation du Concile de Trente. On y représente les troubles excités en Allemagne au sujet de la religion, les assemblées, les conférences, les confessions de foi, les édits, les disputes et les écrits faits sur cette matière, tant par les Catholiques que par les Sectaires. L'origine de l'Hérésie des Sacramentaires et les contestations qu'ils eurent avec Luther et ses disciples. La toisième partie contient une ample Histoire du Concile de Trente et des choses qui se sont passées en Europe touchant la Religion depuis la convocation de ce Concile jusqu'à la fin, c'est à dire jusqu'en 1564. Il y aura un chapitre particulier destiné pour l'histoire de la Révolution d' Angleterre. L'auteur relate ses rencontres avec les directeurs d'établissements et avec des détenus sans rien dissimuler: la sexualité en prison, la violence et les meurtres, les malades mentaux et les traitements qui leur sont infligés, les conséquences dramatiques de l'isolement absolu... Dans le rapport, les membres de l'Académie des Sciences morales et politiques: Mignet, Blanqui, Villermé, lord Brougham, se montrent admiratifs vis-à-vis du travail effectué, mais regrettent, qu'au niveau de la forme, Ch. Webb spent ten years incarcerated at the Oregon State Penitentiary providing him with more than sufficient material for this reasoned and well written critique. He argues that the prison system is purely punitive and utterly fails to rehabilitate prisoners: "Every prison is a school for crime.As a rule instead of prison changing the convict to an honest man it makes him a more vicious man. It generally destroys the little good character he has left." He identifies failures in the legal system sentencing prison employment programs and attempts at rehabilitation through religion. Although ultimately "more is expected of prisons than they can possibly fulfill" and other social reforms are needed to address the problem of crime Webb still believes that serious attempts at rehabilitation are worthwhile. "Force prisons out of politics and place men in charge who understand humanity. For of all tasks there is no greater than that of remaking men." It records and evaluates on basis of first-hand sources the stages of formation of the university from realisation of its concept until its institution as the University of Istanbul. It is the result of many years of research by Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. the formation of a European-type university represented a transformation in Ottoman cultural and educational life. in addition to building the university's legal, administrative and financial structures, it necessitated policy decisions on such subjects as the university model to be followed, the curricula and the faculty. The present work reviews the process extensively. It is comprised of three books laid out in two volumes. The first book examines the emergence of the idea of the modern university beginning from the period of the Tanzimat and its establishment after three attempts, and analyses its evolution in stages, until the 1933 university reform. the second book looks into the development of the Darülfünun in the light of evolving concepts and trends in cultural, social and scholarly life.
