Half-leather. 8vo. VIII, 307, [1] pages. 23 cm. First edition. In German. Half-leather over boards, gilt lettering on spine. Title translates as: Samuel Holdheim: his Life and his Works: a Contribution to the Recent Reform Efforts in Judaism. Contains notes on the Hebrew texts of the Old Testament, together with a translation of the Book of Job, and a grammatical appendix. Rabbi Samuel Holdheim was a leader of the Reform movement in German Judaism early in the 19th century, considered a pioneer in modern Jewish homiletics. The author, Immanuel Heinrich Ritter, was a German rabbi; born March 13, 1825, in Ratibor, Prussian Silesia; died July 9, 1890, in Johannisbad, Bohemia. While studying at the gymnasium of his native town he received his Talmudic instruction under Rabbi Loewe. At the University of Breslau classical philology and history formed his special studies (Ph. D. 1849) . During an audience with the Cultusminister von Raumer in 1851, the latter gave the young candidate to understand that only baptism could entitle him to an appointment as professor at a college. Ritter thereupon accepted a position as teacher of religion and reader at the Berlin Reform congregation, becoming later assistant to the senior preacher of the temple, Samuel Holdheim. His first ten sermons were published as "Kanzelvorträge aus dem Gotteshause der Jüdischen Reformgemeinde" (Berlin, 1856) , which placed him at once among the foremost Jewish preachers of his time. In 1859 his "Beleuchtung der Wagner'schen Schrift, " published against "Das Judenthum und der Staat" by Wagner, member of the Prussian Diet, created a stir. Ritter's principal work was his "Geschichte der Jüdischen Reform, " in four parts (Berlin, 1858-1902) : I. "Mendelssohn und Lessing. " II. "David Friedländer. " III. "Samuel Holdheim. " IV. "Die Jüdische Reformgemeinde in Berlin" (edited by S. Samuel, rabbi in Ussen) . In the first part Ritter demonstrates that Moses Mendelssohn's lack of understanding of historical criticism concerning Judaism was one of the main reasons why his own children and many of his friends became apostates from the religion of their fathers. He further shows that Lessing had a better conception of Judaism than Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn's false view of revelation, a view which identifies Judaism with legalism, makes him a representative of conservatism and even of retrogression. (from the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . Octavo; self-wrappers unopened. 16pp. Toning and creasing to edges with a few minor nicks; about Very Good. <br /> <br /> The New England Female Moral Reform Society's stated goal was the "prevention of licentiousness" prostitution the moral double standard regarding both and protecting young women from the "unprincipled destroyer who seduce and ruin the unsuspecting." Indeed this issue devotes a section to "Street Beggars" who are imposters attempting to lead astray the young and unsuspecting. The paper continues in telling the story of two young women who were led to "a house of ill fame" by one such imposter and were saved from a member of the society and thus saved "from this sink of iniquity. from her 'whose house is the way to hell going down to the chambers of death.'"<br /> <br /> Also of note here is the ongoing "Letters to Sarah E. Grimke" portion of this publication which runs several pages in this issue gently arguing several points regarding the role of women in society. The letter concludes with a post script that the author has just received Grimke's pamphlet "Equality of the Sexes" acknowledges her sincere obligations and urges everyone who reads this publication to also read Grimke's. "Tomorrow morning you will receive in George Street from the Librarian of the House of Lords copies of my two Protests and of Lord Wynford's Protest on the 3rd Reading of the English Reform Bill. I wiosh my Protests to be sent to the Editor of the Standard & Lord Wynford has commissioned me to send his also. Five of the Protests have already appeared in that Paper - which had expressed as I was informed a wish to have them & a readiness to publish them & any others that might be sent to the Editor. It is on this footing that these Protests must be sent. It must on no account appear - nor must a word be said to entitle the Editor to conclude - whatever he may suppose - that either Lord Wynford or I have anything to do with sending them. They must be conveyed to the Editor to publish - if he shall think fit phrase underlined - and must be sent in consequence of his expressing a wish to have & a readiness to publish the Protests. If he does not think fit to publish them he may let it alone & retyurn them. They are not to be paid for as advertisements or otherwise. If you are kind enough to undertake to forward them to the Paper - the Person who takes them may speak or it may bewritten but I should think not with a name in the following sense - that the Protests of Lords H & W are sent to the Standard by one who has reason to know that they are correct in consequence of the readiness expressed by the Editor to make known to the Public the Protests aginst the BILL- - and in consequence of several having already appeared. It might be as well to send them in time for tomorrows sic Evening Paper - or Mondays at furthest. I called in George Street today hoping to catch you before you left your office - but I was too late. I beg if you have any objection to undertaking this office - that you will make no scruple of delivering it. You will find that I could hardly send my Protests in my own name Believe me to be .". POSTSCRIPT They told me at the House of Lords that they were not sent from thence to the Papers. Their not having been sent long ago was very stupid. I hope you will make Dr Coventry understand how absolutely inappropriate it was for me or any one else to make any amendments in so difficult a matter at such a stage - without warning or preparation & in si=uch a House! phrase underlined It was quite out of the question. The thing must now work its own way - if possible to correct them - as they shew themselves in the working of this elaborate & complicated & machine; Should thge Librarian not have sent them to your office in due time - perhaps you will send to him for them. I wrote my name in my two Protests - it would be better to scratch that out." Osman Nuri Ergin was the initiator of the studies regarding modern municipalities' studies and gave so many qualified books related to Ottoman-Turkish urbanism and municipalities' studies scientifically. He was also the first scholar who was one of the architectures of municipalities' studies and history of urbanism and education. His best known book in this field called "Mecelle-i Umûr-i Belediyye". The book is one of the main sources for the history of urbanism, especially for the history of Istanbul. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and other metropolitan cities of Turkey function on the bases of what he declared. Since he worked as an officer for the government during the World War I, the time of Abdulhamid II and at the time of the young Republic, he was one of the figures who know the cultural and social changes in Turkish society. During this cultural transformation, he played a role of bridge in between Ottoman culture and modern day Turkey with the help of some enlightened scholars. He had so many attempts to transform Ottoman Sufi culture to the next generations. To reach this goal, he wrote so many valuable books. Although he wrote books in the fields such as Sufi order, grammar, history of arts, literature, he was not able to publish all of his works in his life. This 'Maarif tarihi' [= History of education] is still the most comprehensive corpus on Ottoman / Turkish education and cultural history.
