Hirsch 1851-1923 "who headed Chicago's Sinai Congregation for forty-two years and led Reform Judaism into the Progressive movement and down social justice pathways was born in Luxemburg.<br> One of several Jews involved in founding the NAACP Hirsch was married to the daughter of abolitionist rabbi David Einhorn and served in his father-in-law's former pulpit in Baltimore before moving to Louisville Kentucky and then Chicago. He was professor of rabbinical literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago in 1892 active in the Republican Party and editor of several influential Jewish publications" Lawrence Bush in Jewish Currents<br> "Hirsch and his congregants struggled to come to terms with the large number of Jewish immigrants who moved to Chicago after 1880 boosting the Jewish community from about 10000 in 1880 to over 300000 in 1920.For the established Jews represented by Sinai the Jewish 'Ghetto' - the immigrant neighborhood on the city's West Side - appeared to represent a world apart and a sharp contrast to Sinai's radical and inclusive reform agenda: a highly visible expression of Jewish ethnicity and traditional Judaism which Reform Jews associated with isolation discrimination and exclusion." <br> Nevertheless during the 1890s "Hirsch spoke up against the deplorable condition of Jews in the Russian Empire and reached out to West Side residents. In 1908 Hirsch and Addams were among the co-founders of the NAACP. Joseph Schaffner and Harry Hart were the leading partner of the clothing manufacturer Hart Schaffner & Marx one of Chicago's largest employers. Apologists for Negro slavery would echo this New England condemnation of the free labor system. The author says wage labor in America is "worse than things at the South."<br/> The League attributes "the evils which oppress and burden the men and women of New England" to "a vicious social organization." America is "but one remove from.the Feudal state. Labor and capital are in direct antagonism. Or rather that labor is passive while capital wages a ceaseless war a guerilla war at least upon it cutting off its resources whenever it is possible. Instead of standing upon an equal footing with capital and being able to treat with it upon an equal basis it stands in the market-place like a slave." He moved on to become founder, first President, and General Manager of the United Press Association. Goodspeed, as a part of the purchase price of the manuscript material contained in the book. In 1847 Charles Dickens published a pamphlet calling on ''fallen women'' to enter a Home established by his friend Bar oness Burdett-Coutts. For many years this pamphlet was unseen by Dickens collectors and some doubt was expressed as to its very existence. Then, in 1928, Charles E. Goodspeed purchased from the last secretary of the Baroness a copy of the pamphlet together with several letters from a correspondence relating to the home and, in particular, to the efforts of Charles Dickens on behalf of a Miss Caroline Maynard Thompson. Raised bands. Spine slightly marred. Hardbound. William 'Just Plain Bill' Sulzer (1863-1941) was a U.S. Congressional Representative from New York between 1895 and 1912. With the backing of Tammany Hall, he became the Governor of New York on January 1, 1913. He soon annoyed Tammany's leader 'Boss' Charles F. Murphy by refusing to accept his guidance on appointments and nominations, ordering investigations of corruption in state agencies, and other similar actions. Tammany politicians brought false charges against him for diverting some campaign contributions to his own use and, with a legislative majority, they made the charges stick. He was impeached and removed from office on October 13, 1913. With Reformers like Thomas leading the fight, he was essentially vindicated, being elected to the New York State Assembly less than a month later. Thomas was deeply involved in Reform Politics, and was the Commonwealth Land candidate for Justice of New York Supreme Court 1st District in 1924. AMERICANA BOX 11
