100p. + Facsimiles. Original full paper covered boards binding. Slipcase. Soiled. First edition. One of only 100 copies, without the Bibliophile insignias, privately printed for Charles E. Goodspeed, as a part of the purchase price of the manuscript material contained in the book. In 1847 Charles Dickens published a pamphlet calling on ''fallen women'' to enter a Home established by his friend Bar oness Burdett-Coutts. For many years this pamphlet was unseen by Dickens collectors and some doubt was expressed as to its very existence. Then, in 1928, Charles E. Goodspeed purchased from the last secretary of the Baroness a copy of the pamphlet together with several letters from a correspondence relating to the home and, in particular, to the efforts of Charles Dickens on behalf of a Miss Caroline Maynard Thompson. These items were purchased from Mr. Goodspeed by the Bibliophile Society. The text of the pamphlet is reprinted here, along with that of the letters. VERY SCARCE **PRICE JUST REDUCED! JUN 1 W34

Raised bands. Spine slightly marred. Hardbound. William 'Just Plain Bill' Sulzer (1863-1941) was a U.S. Congressional Representative from New York between 1895 and 1912. With the backing of Tammany Hall, he became the Governor of New York on January 1, 1913. He soon annoyed Tammany's leader 'Boss' Charles F. Murphy by refusing to accept his guidance on appointments and nominations, ordering investigations of corruption in state agencies, and other similar actions. Tammany politicians brought false charges against him for diverting some campaign contributions to his own use and, with a legislative majority, they made the charges stick. He was impeached and removed from office on October 13, 1913. With Reformers like Thomas leading the fight, he was essentially vindicated, being elected to the New York State Assembly less than a month later. Thomas was deeply involved in Reform Politics, and was the Commonwealth Land candidate for Justice of New York Supreme Court 1st District in 1924. AMERICANA BOX 11

192014968Salem Oregon: Printed for the author at the Oregon State Penitentiary 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 262 pp. A fine copy in original cloth. Webb spent ten years incarcerated at the Oregon State Penitentiary providing him with more than sufficient material for this reasoned and well written critique. He argues that the prison system is purely punitive and utterly fails to rehabilitate prisoners: "Every prison is a school for crime. As a rule instead of prison changing the convict to an honest man it makes him a more vicious man. It generally destroys the little good character he has left." He identifies failures in the legal system sentencing prison employment programs and attempts at rehabilitation through religion. Although ultimately "more is expected of prisons than they can possibly fulfill" and other social reforms are needed to address the problem of crime Webb still believes that serious attempts at rehabilitation are worthwhile. "Force prisons out of politics and place men in charge who understand humanity. For of all tasks there is no greater than that of remaking men." Revised edition of this brutal memoir which served as the basis for Jack London’s Star Rover. This autobiographical account provides an invaluable first-hand look at the brutality that characterized the American prison system in the West at the beginning of the 20th century including the extensive uses of torture devices such as the strait jacket and the derrick which were later banned. Jack London began corresponding with Morrell before his release from prison and drew much of Morrell’s experiences with astral projection during his brutal imprisonment for his 1915 novel. Mildred McEwan Ward left the Univ. of California in order to publish accounts of Morrell’s ordeal and the full story of his life as a member of the Evans-Sontag California Feud Bandits.
