Sehr gutes Exemplar. - Die Werke des Regularkanonikers Arno von Reichersberg (gest. 1175) wurden in der bisherigen Forschung zur Kanonikerreform meist nur am Rand behandelt. Dabei trägt sein Hauptwerk, der „Schild der Kanoniker" (Scutum canonicorum), in entscheidender Weise Anteil am Institutionalisierungsprozess regularkanonikalen Lebens im Salzburger Reformraum. Die Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts entstandene, defensive Streitschrift verfolgt eine zweifache Funktion: Der erste Teil stellt in Form von Consuetudines konkrete Richtlinien für die Umsetzung der vita canonica im Reichersberger Reformstift auf. Im zweiten Teil diskutiert Arno Fragen zum Stellenwert der Regularkanoniker in der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft und verteidigt diese neue Form der vita apostolica gegenüber konkurrierenden Lebensweisen. Das Scutum canonicorum vermittelt nicht nur einen Eindruck von den lebendigen Reformdiskursen in der Salzburger Erzdiözese, sondern stößt auch einen wichtigen Prozess zur Definition der vita canonica an.
