Roy. 8vo., First Edition, with fine engraved portrait frontispiece and 27 fine engraved portrait plates (all original tissue guards present), some very light and generally inoffensive foxing, a few guards offset as intended; contemporary half calf, marbled boards, gilt back, sprinkled edges, brown endpapers, covers lightly age-marked and rubbed at extremities else a remarkably bright, clean copy with excellent impressions of the plates. Includes (in alphabetical order, and each with a portrait): Bowring, Buller, Buxton, Byng, Codrington, Durham, Ebrington, Grey, Grote, Holland, Hume, James, Lansdowne, Leader, Melbourne, Morpeth, Mulgrave, Palmerston, Roebuck, Russell, Spencer, Talfourd, Thompson, Thomson. Wakley, Warburton and Wyse. An important text in the literature of parliamentary reform in Britain. Though the work is often noted for the excellent likenesses of its plates (the majority engraved by Mote and Hull from work by Hayter and others), it would be a mistake to under-value Saunders' assessments, which comprise a key series of contemporary appraisals of biography, character and achievement not easily found elsewhere. Text by novelist John Saunders (1810-1895); the majority of portraits by William Hayter (1792-1879); Sketch of Parliamentary Reform by William Howitt (1792-1871). VERY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

Half-leather. 8vo. VIII, 307, [1] pages. 23 cm. First edition. In German. Half-leather over boards, gilt lettering on spine. Title translates as: Samuel Holdheim: his Life and his Works: a Contribution to the Recent Reform Efforts in Judaism. Contains notes on the Hebrew texts of the Old Testament, together with a translation of the Book of Job, and a grammatical appendix. Rabbi Samuel Holdheim was a leader of the Reform movement in German Judaism early in the 19th century, considered a pioneer in modern Jewish homiletics. The author, Immanuel Heinrich Ritter, was a German rabbi; born March 13, 1825, in Ratibor, Prussian Silesia; died July 9, 1890, in Johannisbad, Bohemia. While studying at the gymnasium of his native town he received his Talmudic instruction under Rabbi Loewe. At the University of Breslau classical philology and history formed his special studies (Ph. D. 1849) . During an audience with the Cultusminister von Raumer in 1851, the latter gave the young candidate to understand that only baptism could entitle him to an appointment as professor at a college. Ritter thereupon accepted a position as teacher of religion and reader at the Berlin Reform congregation, becoming later assistant to the senior preacher of the temple, Samuel Holdheim. His first ten sermons were published as "Kanzelvorträge aus dem Gotteshause der Jüdischen Reformgemeinde" (Berlin, 1856) , which placed him at once among the foremost Jewish preachers of his time. In 1859 his "Beleuchtung der Wagner'schen Schrift, " published against "Das Judenthum und der Staat" by Wagner, member of the Prussian Diet, created a stir. Ritter's principal work was his "Geschichte der Jüdischen Reform, " in four parts (Berlin, 1858-1902) : I. "Mendelssohn und Lessing. " II. "David Friedländer. " III. "Samuel Holdheim. " IV. "Die Jüdische Reformgemeinde in Berlin" (edited by S. Samuel, rabbi in Ussen) . In the first part Ritter demonstrates that Moses Mendelssohn's lack of understanding of historical criticism concerning Judaism was one of the main reasons why his own children and many of his friends became apostates from the religion of their fathers. He further shows that Lessing had a better conception of Judaism than Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn's false view of revelation, a view which identifies Judaism with legalism, makes him a representative of conservatism and even of retrogression. (from the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . Two volumes. pp. (xxx) 448; (x) 531 + Plates. 8vo. 22 cm. Original publisher's cloth binding. Rockwell Kent designed bookplate of Maxwell Steinhardt. The text includes: "A Short Bibliography of the W itings of Samuel Butler and of the Books and Articles Concerning Him". Samuel Butler was born in Langar, Nottinghamshire. The son of a clergyman and grandson of a Bishop, he was educated at Shrewsbury and St John's College, Cambridge. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1859, where he achieved success as a sheep-farmer. His letters home to his father were compiled to form 'A First Year in Canterbury Settlement' (1863), which later became the core of his most popular work, 'Erewhon'. He returned to England in 1864, having accumulated a small fortune, and settled in Clifford's Inn, where he stayed until his death. In 1872 he published 'Erewhon' (an anagram for nowhere) anonymously. It attacked contemporary attitudes on morals, religion, education, and science by describing a land where (among other things) illness is considered a crime. Sick people are thrown in jail, as their sickness is their own fault. Sad people are also imprisoned, for grief is a sign of misfortune and people are held responsible for the actions that made them unfortunate. People who rob or murder, on the other hand, are treated generously and taken to the hospital to recover from their affliction. No machines are allowed in Erewhon, as a philosopher once speculated that machines could rapidly evolve and would take over the world. Students study anything that has absolutely no practical purpose at the University of Unreason. The book was scintillatingly popular. It still can be read with great enjoyment and relevance today. During the next decade Butler wrote a series of controversial scientific works. They were distinctly anti-Darwin, and especially opposed to certain aspects of the theory of natural selection. He also began experimenting in musical composition, and collaborated with his friend (and later biographer) Henry Festing Jones on the oratorio 'Narcissus' (1880). In 1896 he published the biography of his grandfather, Bishop Samuel Butler. Today, his best-known work is probably 'The Way of Al l Flesh'. It was the thoughtful result of many years of hard labor, but did not appear in his lifetime. "I am the 'enfant terrible' of literature and science. If I cannot (and I know I cannot) get the literary and scientific big-wigs to give me a shilling. I can (and I know I can) heave bricks into the middle of them" - Samuel Butler, 'Notebooks' **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140
