This book has been prepared due to the exhibition held in the Military Museum and Culture Site between May 6 and May 15, 1997 in cooperation with the Municipality of Sisli and the Painting and Sculpture Museums Association. One of 1000 copies. "... The old "La Societa Operaia" and the new "Galatasaraylilar Yurdu" [i.e. Dormitory of Galatasaray Lycee] in Beyoglu, Pera started to host three art exhibitions; the first two would be held in the spring of 1916 and 1917, and the last one, which hosted paintings about the war - what would later become known as the Sisli Studio - was held in late 1917 before being brought to Vienna. The Vienna exhibition hosted 20 artists; Zekai Pasha, who had exhibited only one work in the late 1917 exhibition, "Bir Konak Dahili" [i.e. Interior of a Mansion] did not take part in the Vienna show, while the Prince Abdülmecid Efendi, the honorary president of the Society, who had not attended the 1917 exhibition, sent four paintings to Vienna. The opening of the Vienna exhibition was conducted by the Archduke himself. The exhibition, as Celal Esad pointed out, was well received by both Austrian visitors and the press. A poster was designed and the exhibition was accompanied with a German catalogue, Ausstellung Türkischer Maler [i.e. Exhibition of Turkish Painters]. Turkish artists who attended Vienna Exhibition are: Prince Abdulmejid, Ömer Adil Bey, Ali Cemal Ben'im, Ali Sami Boyar, Cevat Bey, Feyhaman Duran, Harika (Sirel Lifij) Hanim, Halil Pasha, Hikmet Onat, Hüseyin Avni Lifij, Ismail Hakki Bey, Mehmed Ali Laga, Mahmud Bey, Namik Ismail, Rusen Zamir Hanim, Mehmed Ruhi Bey, Mehmed Sami Bey (Yetik), Sevket Dag, Diyarbakirli Tahsin, and Ibrahim Çalli; with their 142 pieces of paintings totally, in different techniques.

This volume is an examination of the turbulent twenty-four years in which Constantinople, once splendid and celebrated, gradually disintegrated under its last rulers, who had inherited all the problems of an aging social system and possessed few of the talents needed to resolve them. The confrontations between Byzantium and the Western powers became increasingly important and form the major theme of Mr. Brand's study.

Byzantium in Popular Culture navigates through the eclectic presence of Byzantium in popular culture. Curated by Emir Alisik, the exhibition explores multiple and conflicting meanings of Byzantinism, and questions popular culture?s interaction with the Byzantine legacy. It scrutinizes a selection of motifs found in visual arts, literature, metal music, comics and graphic novels, video games, movies, and fashion representing Byzantium in popular culture. Emir Alisik and Gulru Tanman co-authors the introductory chapter to the catalogue accompanying ?What Byzantinism Is This in Istanbul!?: Byzantium in Popular Culture. The volume brings together the articles of 10 researchers who examine and interpret Byzantinism?s representations in various fields of art. The articles by Roland Betancourt, Felice Lifshitz, Brigitte Pitarakis, Sinan Ekim, Yagmur Karakaya, Elif Demirtiken, Jeremy J. Swist, Marco Fasolio, Haris Theodorelis-Rigas, and Emir Alisik discuss how Byzantinisms appearing in various domains of popular culture relate to the Byzantine history depending on the context in which those artworks are produced.

Edited by Münevver Eminoglu. Text by Christine Peltre, Engin Yenal. [Exhibition catalogue]. Jules Joseph Augustin Laurens, commonly known as Jules Laurens was a French artist in drawing, painting, and lithography who is remembered above all for his Oriental works. One of a family of five, at the age of 12 he went to live with his brother, Jean-Joseph (1801¿1890) in Montpellier where he attended the city's art college while benefitting from his brother's artistic contacts. He went on to Paris, studying under Paul Delaroche at the École des Beaux-Arts, first exhibiting in 1840 and completing his studies in 1846. Chosen by the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell to join him on an extended scientific journey to Turkey and Persia, Laurens made over a thousand drawings of the sites, costumes and people he encountered on his travels. They included many portraits of Persian personalities. His biography "Nazar-Andaz" gives an account of de Hell's death at Isfahan in August 1848. Thanks to the French ambassador, Laurens was able to reach Teheran from where he sent back de Hell's notes together with his own drawings. Hundreds of them were presented in the Atlas historique et scientifique, the fourth volume of the Voyage en Turquie et en Perse published by de Hell's wife. Some of Laurens' lithographs were published in L'Illustration and Tour du Monde, both popular periodicals, while the originals, together with his early watercolours were given to the library of the École des Beaux-Arts. Laurens also painted examples of qajar art while in Persia, including his Danseuse au tambourin.

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. Color and b/w ills. 219 p. "In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums started large-scale salvage excavations at Yenikapi within the scope of Marmaray-Metro projects. For the first time in Istanbul's history, archaeological excavations were conducted at one of its Byzantine harbors. When the excavations started, it was not known what this ancient harbor at the mouth of the Lykos (Bayrampasa) River would yield. At first, Ottoman remains were encountered in the excavation area, which covers over 58,000 square meters. Then, one of Constantinople's most important, and the world's best known harbors, the Theodosian Harbor, was reached only 1 meter below sea level. During the ongoing excavations, countless small finds and works of architecture were unearthed. In addition to wood and rope fragments, an unexpected find, a shipwreck, was found in 2005. As the excavation area expanded, a total of 37 ships dating between the 5th and 11th centuries were brought to light. Among the finds are very well preserved small and large merchantmen, as well as galleys from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, which have been found for the first time. The Yenikapi wrecks constitute the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found together. Another surprise was waiting for the archaeologists 6,3 meters below sea level: Istanbul's oldest settlement. This Neolithic settlement dates back 8000 years and changes the writing of Istanbul's history. The footprints of Istanbulites who lived there thousands of years ago were found a few meters below. As the excavations go on uninterrupted, we have now acquired much new information about the city. This exhibition has been prepared in light of the finds from Yenikapi and their scientific study. It presents a section of the city from its first inhabitants to the present, and allows a multidimensional view of trade, seafaring, shipbuilding technology, and everyday life in Constantinople through four wrecks that were found together with their cargo. A publication by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Koç Foundation, Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations and Koç University Press".
