Nessuno aveva mai parlato in modo così impassibile dei crimini che aveva commesso durante il genocidio degli ebrei nei campi di concentramento di Auschwitz- Birkenau. Nel 1946 Rudolf Höss fornì una testimonianza scioccante sull'apparato omicida nazista e sulla sua spietata crudeltà. Utilizzando resoconti ufficiali inediti di interrogatori e testimonianze, questo libro prova a ricostruire che cosa sia successo. Nel settembre 1944 Bruno Segre, giovane antifascista torinese, viene arrestato e recluso nella famigerata caserma di via Asti e di lì, poi, alle Carceri Nuove. Due anni dopo scriverà la storia della sua prigionia in questo memoriale, dipingendo un affresco della repressione, e dell'umanità che l'ha subita. In queste pagine si legge una storia di italiani: fascisti e partigiani, gente comune, uomini e donne meschini e brutali, buffi, arroganti, geniali, insignificanti, solidali, doppiogiochisti, eroici, talvolta loro malgrado. Questo racconto ci ricorda come, settant'anni fa, da molti collaborazionisti, "attendisti", vittime - le brutali persecuzioni e l'esperienza della prigionia fossero vissute come normali.
