Just a hint of shelf/edge wear to black cloth boards with red titles - corners sharp. Moderate shelf/edge wear and a few closed tears to original unclipped DJ - now in mylar. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean unmarked and lightly toned due to cheap paper. Endpapers are clean and unmarked. S. S. Van Dine also styled S.S. Van Dine is the pseudonym used by American art critic Willard Huntington Wright October 15 1888 – April 11 1939 when he wrote detective novels. He went on to write twelve mysteries in total though their author's identity was unmasked by 1928. The first few books about the distinctive Philo Vance who shared with his creator a love of art and a disdain for the common touch were so popular that Wright became wealthy for the first time in his life. A beautiful showgirl name "the Canary" is a scheming nightclub singer. Blackmailing is her game and with that she ends up dead. But who killed "the Canary". Jimmy is arrested and Philo Vance a whimsical society man and amateur detective who is a close friend of Jimmy's father is called in on the case.
