Das Exlibris zeigt einen Vogel mit geöffneten Flügeln (Truthahn/Adlerschwingen) und dem Unterkörper eines Löwen (Beine/Schwanz). Es liegt in mehreren Varianten vor. Zwei Exlibris im größeren Format (ca. 17 x 8,8 cm): hiervon eines ganz in schwarzer Farbe, ein weiteres in schwarz/rot. Drei Exlibris im kleineren Format (ca. 12 x 5,8 cm): eines in schwarzer Farbe, eines in blauer Farbe, ein drittes in blau und hellem Rot. Bei letztgenanntem Exlibris handelt es sich um einen Entwurf (kein Druck!), das Exlibris ist auch deutlich fester weil das Papier hinterlegt wurde. Alle Exlibris tragen am unteren Rand die in die Platte gearbeitete Signatur "M Honegger 98".

Most bifoliums. 4to Largest 21" x 9-1/2" unfolded. A lovely group of lettersheets by Charles Magnus entirely typical of his output. Lettersheets were a convenient and thrifty form of stationery in an era which postage was calculated on the number of sheets used. Folded in half these four pages were charged as a single page.<br/><br/>Charles Magnus emigrated to New York with his family in the late 1840s. His older brother published the weekly German language newspaper Deutsche Schnellpost and it was there that Charles learned the trade eventually going out on his own. In the guises of a publisher map dealer bookseller and stationer he issued more than a thousand pieces of illustrated stationery - lettersheets envelopes song sheets as well as prints - usually copying the work from other sources without attribution sometimes altering the images slightly. He continued to use lithography and hand-coloring long after other publishers turned to photomechanical reproduction processes. Charles Magnus, 61 Bowery unknown books

ril. Cinquecento giorni trascorrono, nella vita di Napoleone Bonaparte, tra il crollo dell'Impero, l'esilio all'Elba, i Cento Giorni e la partenza, infine, per Sant'Elena. Al loro inizio c'è un tentativo di togliersi la vita, a Fontainebleau, nelle stanze vuote di un palazzo vuoto da cui tutti si sono prudentemente allontanati, lasciando solo l'Imperatore in disgrazia. Alla fine, ancora la tentazione di un suicidio, sul vascello inglese che lo conduce, ormai prigioniero, a Sant'Elena. In mezzo, un tempo per così dire intermedio - 500 giorni non sono né pochi né molti - scandito da scelte obbligate: partire, restare, combattere, fuggire. Scelte che si sbaglierebbe a immaginare rivolte solo alla vittoria, o peggio alla rivincita. Esse sono, più spesso, dettate, al contrario, dall'idea della sconfitta, dall'incubo del congedo. Come uscire di scena è, per Napoleone, in questo finale di partita, molto più importante che restare a tutti i costi sul palcoscenico. Come uscire di scena, rendendo per sempre indimenticabile ciò che egli ha fatto nei giorni della fortuna, evitare di negarlo con un comportamento poco appropriato, fare che la propria vita, e la storia che in essa si è scritta, non perda di significato, come molti, troppi, intorno a lui vorrebbero fare e provare a fare in quei lunghi, brevi 500 giorni.

ril. Quando i tedeschi occupano la Boemia e la Moravia, nel marzo 1939, Zdenka Fantlová ha 17 anni. Nonostante le discriminazioni che i nazisti impongono da subito agli ebrei, cerca di vivere normalmente la sua vita. Fino a quando il padre viene deportato a Buchenwald: Zdenka non lo rivedrà più. Nel 1942 viene deportata, insieme alla famiglia e al fidanzato Arno, a Terezín, un campo di concentramento a nord-ovest di Praga. Mentre Arno viene spedito in un campo a est, Zdenka vi rimane fino al 1944, quando viene «trasferita» ad Auschwitz: lei e la sorella Lydia sopravvivono alle selezioni, la madre no. Ma a questo punto le sorti della guerra si sono ribaltate, i russi incalzano e cominciano le terribili «marce della morte» verso ovest. Zdenka e Lydia transitano così da Kurzbach e poi dal famigerato campo di Gross-Rosen. E poi sono di nuovo «spostate» a Mauthausen e infine a Bergen-Belsen. Qui, dopo la morte della sorella, Zdenka viene infine liberata dagli inglesi, unica sopravvissuta della sua famiglia. Oggi, a 95 anni, Zdenka è impegnata a portare la sua testimonianza in giro per il mondo, perché tutto ciò che lei ha vissuto non sia dimenticato.

Relations courantes de bibliophile à relieur d'art. Uzanne très satisfait du travail de Noulhac, qui visiblement lui propose par ailleurs d'acheter un exemplaire de Mouche(Conte de Maupassant - sans doute l'édition pour les Bibliophiles contemporains publiée en 1892). Bien à vous Octave Uzanne * * * (*) Henri Noulhac, né à Châteauroux en 1866. Il fut apprenti puis ouvrier relieur dans cette ville avant de venir à Paris en 1890 où, pendant quatre ans, il travailla dans différents ateliers. En 1894, il s'établit à son compte au 10 rue de Buci, puis quelques années plus tard, 6 rue du Pont-de-Lodi et enfin 37 rue Mazarine. Henri Beraldi l'encouragea à ses débuts en lui confiant des travaux à exécuter en janséniste car il n'était ni dessinateur ni doreur, mais un relieur consciencieux cherchant toujours à se perfectionner. Bientôt, il monta un atelier de dorure et s'adjoignit un ouvrier de cette spécialité. Il se lança alors dans la reliure décorée, faisant d'abord des copies, surtout de l'époque romantique, puis des décors modernes dessinés par des spécialistes, tels Giraldon et Chadel, puis plus tard par sa propre fille, élève de Giraldon. Il travailla pour de nombreux amateurs qu'il contribua à former avant qu'ils ne deviennent professionnels tels Rose Adler et Madeleine Gras. Henri Noulhac exerça jusqu'à sa mort, à l'âge de soixante-cinq ans, le 22 mars 1931. Ce fut un artisan probe, d'une perfection et d'une sûreté de main remarquables ayant au plus haut point conscience de son métier.
