1855018849London: John Murray 1855. New edition carefully revised and condensed. Two volumes small octavo pp xvi 348; xii 345 two page publisher's catalogue dated January 1856 at rear of second volume illustrated with two frontispieces a red plate of the Dhurma Rajah's seal and wood engravings in the text. Both volumes are original green cloth and have been neatly recased and rebacked with the original spines which are lacking pieces at the head and tail laid down the original yellow endpapers retained. Volume 1 - the hinge after the frontispiece cracking but absolutely no weakness the fore-edge is a little uneven and in three places it is worn into a slight groove. Volume 2 is better throughout. Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker 1817 - 1911 was a British botanist and explorer. He was a founder of geographical botany and Charles Darwin's closest friend. For twenty years he served as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew succeeding his father William Jackson Hooker and was awarded the highest honours of British science. His expedition to the Himalayas lasted three years and he was the first European to collect plants there; he was among many things responsible for the introduction of many Rhododendrons toBritish gardens. 1797021414Pater-noster Row & Strand London: G.G. & J. Robinson; T. Cadell & W. Davies 1797. Second edition "carefully revised corrected and very much enlarged and improved". Very thick quarto not paginated but probably 1200 pages or more with 11 engraved plates one of which is folding the plates are rather foxed and toned the text is slightly age-toned and foxed though not consistently so the hinge at the title page is cracked but in no way weak and the front endpaper IS loose and indeed the firmness and lack of damage to the pages throughout is remarkable; bound in contemporary speckled calf with marginal gilt lining the spine with gilt decoration and morocco label slightly worn overall very neatly re-backed at some time the original endpapers retained. At some time this copy found its way to the United States as it contains the tiny label of the notable horticultural bookseller Elisabeth Woodburn. Balnche Henrey 1087. One of the most comprehensive and detailed descriptions of horticultural practices at the end of the eighteenth century. Authorship is generally attributed to Abercrombie only. Second edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. G.G. & J. Robinson; T. Cadell & W. Davies Hardcover

183154248Philadelphia: Stoddart and Atherton 1831. Second edition. Three octavo volumes 22cm. Contemporary marbled calf with leather spine labels; engraved extra-title present in each volume; xvi7-362;330;264pp; engraved frontispiece v.1 and 48 inserted leaves of plates; text illus. A complete structurally sound Good or better set. Early ownership signature of a Benj. Webb Jr. on endpaper and extra-title of v.1.

A quite presentable set of Godman's treatise on the mammals of North America including some ethnographic notes on Native Americans and a lengthy discussion of the fossil record with special attention given to the Giant Mastodon. Much of the third volume is devoted to a description of the American whale fishery. Godman 1794-1830 was trained as a physician and was for some time the director of the Philadelphia Anatomical Rooms a private medical college where he achieved considerable renown as an anatomist. American Natural History described as "the first systematic treatise on the subject" DAB was first published in Philadelphia from 1826-1828; two "Second Editions" appeared in 1831 this one under the Stoddart & Atherton imprint and another by Key & Mielkie. Sabin and Imprints Bruntjen & Bruntjen note only the latter but OCLC records suggest that the two editions are collected with equivalent frequency. Neither Sabin nor Imprints supply a plate count for the Second Edition but our copy conforms to that at the Smithsonian Institution the only OCLC member institution to provide a collation.
