47783Two albumen print photographs in identical cabinet card format 165 x 109 mm mounts; rectos with printed caption 'Miss Lily Dampier' and imprint of 'Falk / 496 George Street Sydney'; one with pencilled annotation recto 'Lady of Lyons Sept. 1887 both identically inscribed in ink to verso 'Lily as Lady of Lyons Sept 4th 1887'; both prints and mounts with some very light foxing. Provenance: from a group of theatre-related photographs originally collected by the Sydney actor stage manager and playwright Alfred Dampier. Australian stage and silent screen actress Lily Dampier Katherine Annabel Lily Dampier 1867-1915 was the daughter of Alfred Dampier and Katherine Russell. Although her best known stage roles were Shakespearean she was also a success as Sylvia in her father's adaptation of Marcus Clarke's novel For the Term of His Natural Life and as Kate in Robbery Under Arms. She later starred in several early Australian silent films including three released in 1911: The Life of Rufus Dawes which was based on her father's stage adaptation of For the Term of His Natural Life; Captain Midnight the Bush King; and Captain Starlight or Gentleman of the Road. unknown

The National Library of Scotland mentions a 1932 film entitled FILM OF GLASGOW with a segment: "Peggy Moro and Shan. female ballroom dancer and two male partners on stage performing lifts 17.00;" London Musicals 1930-1934 mentions the 1931 play Blue Roses with "the speciality acrobatic act of Peggy Moro and Delso . . . "This is Harry Bacon the preeminent London shirtmaker and the brother of Max Bacon. Before becoming a character actor Max Bacon was one of the most significant drummers in Britain during the 1920s and 30s. He wrote Max on “Swing" 1934. London: Circa 1932 unknown

Two original vintage silver-gelatin studio portraits ca 5-3/8" x 3-1/2"; printed to borders with embossed edges; printed for postal use on verso with divided backs for addressing. Slight crease to one corner but both images very well-preserved Near Fine. Embossed studio stamp in image lower right: "Lucerne / Studio / 1437 Fillmore Street / S.F. Cal." <br /> <br /> Also included are slightly larger proof versions of the same two images on thinner photographic paper each with abrasions at center of image with evidence of scrapbook adhesion to versos; Good only. <br /> <br /> The first image is of two young female sitters posing arms encircling each other's backs dressed in identical Pierrot costumes -- possibly attired for a costume ball. The second image is a solo portrait of one of the same two sitters. Undated; sitters unidentified but this studio appears to have been active in the period 1909-1911. An advertisement offering Lucerne Studio for sale appears in the February 1912 issue of Camera Craft a San Francisco photographic trade journal.
