An Australian artist who studied and worked in Britain Rayner was a student of Walter Sickert at the Royal Academy and a friend of Augustus John. <br/><br/>"Henry Rayner's single-minded devotion to the drypoint technique created what is almost certainly the largest body of drypoint work of any mid-20th century artist. Rayner typically took 15 or fewer impressions from each plate. It has taken nearly 70 years for Henry Rayner's drypoint work to begin attracting serious interest among collectors." In fair condition: lightly faded on slightly-aged card. Card printed in red on both sides with Nadar's address and facsimile signature on reverse and his initial within the border containing the photograph on the other side. Head and shoulders shot of the singer staring at the viewer in a dark dress attached at the neck. Beneath the image on both print and card Nilsson has written 'offert à Mr Montiguani par signed Christine Nillson Edinburgh le 6 Décembre 1869.' I've no idea what paper you saw that reported the councillor's dislike of my sketches - actually at the meeting only one man expressed some demur about them and poor man he was defeated by the otherwise general approval of the committee which decided to go ahead with the scheme I proposed. I am doing the final designs now and weaving will start in the autumn. We go off to Italy shortly and will be back in early October so it you care to pay us a visit in later October or any time after we would be pleased to see you." Note: A letter form Elisabeth Frink from the same source as this is addressed to "Mr. O.E. Roberts" of Budleigh Salterton. She mentions a sculpture he is working on. Un leggerissimo alone al margine basso bianco delle ultime 10 carte, ininfluente e nel complesso esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione in bella legatura settecentesca.
