194712473Berkeley: Bern Borter 1947. Limited Edition. Very good/Very good-. Octavo 33pp. illustrated. Duncan's first book. A very good copy in the publisher's green cloth. Boards mildly soiled and the spine somewhat darkened though the gilt remains bright. This copy apparently one of three known examples with a dust jacket more on that to follow which repeats the design of the endpapers with no text. Jacket about very good unevenly toned with a large chip on the rear panel. This is number 5 of 100 limited copies SIGNED by Duncan on the limitation page alongside illustrator Mary Fabilli and with two manuscript poems in Duncan's hand written on the following leaf: "The blessed Herbert in his love does sing." and "Faithless and many minded muses.". This copy additionally inscribed by Duncan though unsigned it's clearly in his hand on a front blank to Bradley Bransford and dated in advance of publication: "for Brad 1947 July. Sometimes our feelings are so mild they are like a day when rocks seem mere extensions of the sea / these days these feelings are prehaps true undulations of love's most pleasant guise." Bransford's ownership signature appears on the front free endpaper. A lengthy typed note from bookseller Jack Shoemaker offering this book in 1976 for $850 to a collector gives some background details on the publication history some of which he was able to glean from talking to Duncan himself at the time of writing. The two manuscript poems at rear were not published until 2012 more than two decades after Duncan's death. Bertholf A1b. (Bern Borter) unknown

"A treasure for connoisseurs and scholars this volume showcases the ravishing chalk studies of male and female nude models made after 1800 by famous French painter Pierre-Paul Prud'hon. Often called "the French Correggio" for his freewheeling mythological and allegorical canvases Prud'hon 1758-1823 was an unorthodox public artist of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire. The Romantic generation championed his melancholy mysterious eroticism which is on full display in these feminized male bodies and idealized female torsos. Chief curator at large for Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art Elderfield looks at Prud'hon's unhappy life he separated from his violent drunken wife after 25 years gaining custody of his five children when she was committed to an insane asylum and masterfully analyzes startling works that blur normally separated categories masculine/feminine platonic/passionate cool/ecstatic in a transgressive fantasy of desire. Gordon is an independent art historian." Book Review by John Elderfield From Publishers Weekly -- with a bonus offer--; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall . Harry N Abrams Inc hardcover

9779Newark VT: Janus Press 2018. Original Wrappers. Fine binding. Quarto. 2 24 ll. illus. Limited edition of one hundred numbered copies. Signed by Dawes and Gregg at the colophon. In a glued leaf binding in printed Canal paper covers. Gregg's drawings have been digitally printed here with Dawes's holographic poems letterpress printed from polymer plates around the drawings. Accompanying this is a smaller french-fold chapbook printed with matching foliation all housed in clamshell with maple wood sides in a slipcase with printed paper label. A fine copy.

The chapbook offers a transcription of the holographic poems in the main work—though Dawes's handwriting is plenty legible. Additionally a short "Poet's Note" at the beginning of this chapbook describes his process of writing these poems in response to Gregg's drawings of Vallarta. He writes: "The poems collected here represent the most exciting part of making poems for me which is writing the first draft in that breakneck pace of someone in search of what a poem is offering and doing so with faith that it will eventually reveal itself to me." And of this particular collection of poems Dawes makes a fascinating observation: "I write to understand how I have been moved by the art." A beautiful idea searching for understanding through writing. A wonderful and accidental or perhaps inspired collaboration between the founder of the Vermont Studio Center and the Ghanaian poet. 194512833Cummington MA: Cummington Press 1945. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Large octavo unpaginated. A notoriously fragile book and one of only "a few" per Edelstein see below copies bound in rose-colored Japanese Natsume straw-paper over boards. The calf spine is worn at the extremities but less so than is often seen and the binding is sound. Gentle wear to corners but a sharp internally clean example; very good. Lacking as usual the plain glassine dust jacket. This is number 260 of 300 limited copies another 40 were signed by Stevens. Edelstein A10 references an unpublished letter from Harry Duncan publisher of the Cummington Press to Stevens which reads in part: "Five copies will be mailed to you on Monday. One of these is covered with rose paper not with the green . Only a few copies have it all the available green paper not quite being enough for the entire edition." Furthermore of the six locations noted by Edelstein only Holly Stevens's copy is in the rose binding. A desirable copy. Cummington Press hardcover
