Blue endpapers. Illustrations. Very Good set. The volumes of The Book of a Thousand Nights are each only lightly shelfworn with the majority of the edgewear to the spine head and top-edge of the boards. Spine labels are browned with a couple of chips. Volume VII's first 30 or so pages have minor brown staining along the lower edge. The volumes of Tales from the Arabic each have scuffs to the tops of each board and small stains to the paper labels. Otherwise only lightly shelfworn. Alaeddin shows a dime-sized red rub to the front board and a few white rubs that have left dents to the rear board. Each volume shows little foxing or spotting inside and are in wonderful condition for their age. A fantastic set! Arab Folklore Arab Folklore Inquire if you need further information. 27 p. + [12] leaves of etched satiric plates by Volck. Lightly foxed. 20 x 16 cm. Original cloth binding, stamped in gilt and blind; slightly discolored. Written by James Fairfax McLaughlin (1839-1903), this is a caustic poetic satire on the "Black Republican" Union Civil War General and notorious carpet-bagger - Ben Butler (who was widely reviled for years after the war by Southern whites, who gave him the nickname "Beast Butler". It is most famous for its biting etched illustrations by the powerful artist and Confederate sympathizer A. J. Volck. Adalbert John Volck (1828-1912) emigrated to America from Bavaria in 1849, and became a successful dentist in Baltimore. He is principally remembered for "Confederate War Etchings", a series of caricatures favorable to the Southern cause, issued in 1862 & 1863 under the pseudonym "V. Blada." VERY SCARCE. W20

After studying at the Academy of Arts in Munich he went to England to study Whistler and then the Netherlands to practice the pleinair method. Back in Munich he joined the Munich Secession and on invitation of Max Liebermann moved to Berlin and joined the Berlin Secession. He became an important chronicler of the history of ballet in Germany. The numbers I-XXV and 1-100 are printed by hand and signed by the artist. This is number 36. Text in German. Très beau recueil, en parfait état, d’un ensemble d’épreuves, non justifié car hors commerce, mais, bien évidemment, rare.
