"The antecedent work of this poster is a 1943 tempera 1943 A.D. According to Bernarda Shahn her husband did the painting during his stay in the Office of War Information basing his work on a photograph he had taken in the thirties while traveling in the hills of Arkansas. The photograph was of a farmer whose seeming integrity and strength greatly impressed Shahn. Engaging his subject in coversation Shahn found out that the farmer estimated the value of his crop at one dollar and fifty cents. The farmer in the meantime had sent out his two boys with a shotgun and two shells to hunt for their dinner. Before long they returned with two squirrels. In the poster the blue-shirted worker chin in hand seems fearful and confused. The appealingly simple proposition "a equals b therefore do c" was presented by Shahn as "Inflation Equals Depression therefore Register and Vote." However the image of this troubled man lingers with the viewer and takes on a meaning far beyond the intent of the poster message. His facial expression suggests even deeper anxieties which may be expalined that the painted image originated during a perion of Shahn's life when the cruelties of the Second World War were foremost in his mind." A fairly good copy.<br /> <br /> First part only of the first Latin edition of this classic work on Jewish apologetics written by the celebrated rabbi religious thinker and printer-publisher Menasseh ben Israel 1604-1657. The work was first published in Spanish at Amsterdam in four parts between 1632 and 1651. By providing a harmonization of all the apparent contradictions within the Hebrew Scriptures he hoped to encourage converso Jews of Iberian descent who had lost touch with their religious heritage to make the return to rabbinic Judaism. The present volume deals with the Pentateuch Five Books of Moses; the second volume treats the Prophetic books and the Hagiographa Writings. The work was first published a year earlier in a Spanish language edition.<br /> <br /> The work attempts resolution to no less than 180 seeming discrepancies in the Pentateuch. The breadth of Menasseh's encyclopedic knowledge is vast the Conciliador contains citations from 221 Jewish and 54 non-Jewish authorities. Featuring some of Beardsley's last completed illustrations First Beardsley edition deluxe issue number 79 of 100 copies printed on japon paper specially bound in full vellum and featuring an extra suite of five plates with larger versions of Beardsley's vignettes. In November 1897 Beardsley was commissioned to produce 24 illustrations for this edition of Jonson's Volpone including a frontispiece decorative initials and a front cover design. In the event he could only complete the cover design the frontispiece and six vignettes before his death on 16 March 1898. This was however a project that Beardsley was passionate about writing "I am making pictures of Ben Jonson's adorable and astonishing Volpone" and "I carry Volpone about with me from dawn to dawn and dream of nothing else". He considered his illustration for the frontispiece "Volpone Adoring His Treasure" as "one of the strongest things I have ever done" cited in Nelson p. 163. Large quarto. Printed cover design frontispiece and 6 vignettes by Beardsley 5 of the vignettes reproduced in large size in photogravure title printed in red and black. The most famous adaptation was the 1940 screwball comedy His Girl Friday directed by Howard Hawks and starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Title with ornamental border with atypical cupids to the top.<br /><br />The Proops family were a dynasty of well known Hebrew printers publishers and booksellers in Amsterdam. Solomon Ben Yosef d. 1734 whose father may have been a Hebrew printer as well was an established bookseller in Amsterdam and in 1704 had set up his own Hebrew press which produced mainly liturgical books as well as works on halakhah Kabbalah Jewish ethics and history. From 1715 productions by Proops carried advertisements of books he had published and in 1730 he issued a sales catalogue the first such Hebrew publication. <br />After his death appointed guardians continued to operate the press and even when his three sons took over they continued trade under the old name until 1751 and later - under their own names. In 1785 Joseph Proops sold most of his work to Kurzbeck of Vienna and when Proops died a year later his widow and sons continued printing on a small scale with various partners until 1812. Solomon ben Abraham Proops grandson of Solomon Ben Yosef split from the family printing house in 1797 and continued to work alone until 1827.<br /> Vinograd Amsterdam 2293. First edition inscribed in first state dust jacket.</p><p>Published in 1926 by Pascal Covici Chicago Illinois. Inscribed by Ben Hecht to Ralph D. Hartman who at the time was president of Cleveland Photographic Society Cleveland Ohio. First edition first printing in first state dust jacket. This book was a continuation of Hecht's short newspaper stories published in a book called "1001 Afternoons in Chicago" by Covici McGee 1922 Chicago. 1001 Afternoons in Chicago was one of Hecht's more successful books.<br />Book is in very good plus to near fine condition with two early bookplates on the front pastedown; inscription is on first flyleaf. Dust jacket is very good to very good plus with a lightly sunned spine and lightly chipped head and toe. Original "$2.50" price is present on jacket. No reviews on back of dust jacket. Dust jacket rarely found for this early Ben Hecht book.<br />Interior pages somewhat toned.</p><p>Ben Hecht was a "Chicago Renaissance" playwright novelist and short story writer. He moved to New York and found success his and Charles MacArthur's enduring classic play "The Front Page." From there Hecht moved to Hollywood and became one of the highest screenplay writers for the 1920s and into the 1940s. Hecht's screen credits include "Underworld" for which he won an Academy Award; Scarface; Wuthering Heights; Gunga Din; Notorius; Spellbound; Monkey Business; Farewell to Arms; and a hundred more. A nearly complete 34-year run of Analog Science Fiction totaling 403 issues lacking only 18 issues of this long-running science-fiction anthology that began as Astounding Stories in 1930. This run begins in 1960 after its purchase by publisher Condé Nast. John W. Campbell oversaw the changes and remained editor until 1970 when Ben Bova took over his duties earning five consecutive Hugo Awards for Best Editor in the process. This run of issues includes works by many notable writers such as Frank Herbert Orson Scott Card Poul Anderson Roger Zelanzny Harlan Ellison Frederick Pohl Joe Haldeman George R.R. Martin Jerry Pournelle and Geoffrey A. Landis along with many others. Among the notable stories first published by Analog are: "Hero" by Haldeman which was the first installment of his award-winning Forever War series; "With Morning Comes Mistfall" by Martin his first story to be nominated for the Hugo Award and Nebula Awards; "Ender's Game" by Card which was later expanded into a Hugo and Nebula Award-winning series of novels and basis for a feature film starring Harrison Ford; and "Dune World" and "The Prophet of Dune" by Herbert which were published together as Dune. Recased in its original period vellum binding and reinforced with new endpapers. Introductory text in Latin dedicates the book to Pope Sixtus V and includes his elaborate engraved papal coat of arms as well as large decorative initials. The initial text also gives biographical and historical background on the author and his roots. The Latin introduction is followed by a two-page Hebrew intoduction.<br /> <br /> This phenomenal volume is a pioneering trilingual Hebrew-Latin-Italian dictionary created by Italian Renaissance-Era Rabbi linguistic scholar and physician David ben Isaac De Pomis 1524-1594. De Pomis' aim with this work being as he was a scholar of both Jewish as well as secular subjects was to create a work which would who have crossover appeal and be useful to both Jewish and non-Jewish scholars alike. In many ways the work can be seen valuable outreach to the Christian and Italian communities of the period. Although De Pomis approaches this work from the perspective of Rabbinic/Biblical Hebrew he also includes numerous additional medical and biological terms given his background as a physician. The main body of the text consists of the dictionary which is organized alphabetically according to the Hebrew. What was originally bound in as a separately paginated concluding section at the end of the volume leaves 5-62 here has been mistakenly rebound before the main pagination 238 leaves. These sections include a glossary of common Rabbinic abbreviations a Italian-Hebrew Lexicon containing the original Italian in Roman script facing the Judeo-Italian in Hebrew script leaf 5-36 and a final alphabetical index of Latin words leaves 36-62.<br /> <br /> There are original printing errors resulting in the mis-pagination of 6 leaves #77 79 85 112 199 and #10 of the other pagination but all content is present.<br /> <br /> Text throughout in Hebrew Latin and Italian all printed in a two-column format.<br /> <br /> Binding with some light rubbing and bumping to the edges. A strip of vellum has been torn away at the top of the front cover. Some additional period staining to the covers. Light water stains and foxing to the title page which includes the period ink signature of the previous owner J. Blacknell in the left margin. Text pages throughout with some light to moderate staining to the margins. Text mostly unaffected and overall clean and vibrant. Bottom corners of the final two leaves including the blank with some light chipping. Book block tight. Binding in good interior in very good- condition overall.
