Introductory text in Latin dedicates the book to Pope Sixtus V and includes his elaborate engraved papal coat of arms as well as large decorative initials. The initial text also gives biographical and historical background on the author and his roots. The Latin introduction is followed by a two-page Hebrew intoduction.<br /> <br /> This phenomenal volume is a pioneering trilingual Hebrew-Latin-Italian dictionary created by Italian Renaissance-Era Rabbi linguistic scholar and physician David ben Isaac De Pomis 1524-1594. De Pomis' aim with this work being as he was a scholar of both Jewish as well as secular subjects was to create a work which would who have crossover appeal and be useful to both Jewish and non-Jewish scholars alike. In many ways the work can be seen valuable outreach to the Christian and Italian communities of the period. Although De Pomis approaches this work from the perspective of Rabbinic/Biblical Hebrew he also includes numerous additional medical and biological terms given his background as a physician. The main body of the text consists of the dictionary which is organized alphabetically according to the Hebrew. Following sections include a glossary of common Rabbinic abbreviations a Italian-Hebrew Lexicon containing the original Italian in Roman script facing the Judeo-Italian in Hebrew script leaf 5-36 and a final alphabetical index of Latin words leaves 36-62.<br /> <br /> There are original printing errors resulting in the mis-pagination of 7 leaves #77 79 85 112 190 199 and #10 of the second pagination but all content is present.<br /> <br /> Text throughout in Hebrew Latin and Italian all printed in a two-column format.<br /> <br /> Binding with head and tail of spine chipped away hinges splitting and some additional rubbing to extremities. Some scratching to covers. Interior with some sporadic minor to light foxing water stains and/or smudges throughout the text. Title page loose but sill attached. A few minor sporadic instances of worming but all are in the margins. Leaves 222-228 of the first pagination contain minimal water staining along the bottom margin not affecting text. Small tears to the bottom corners of leaf 120 of the first pagination and leaf 35 of the second pagination. Starting at interior front cover. Book block tight overall. Each print with protective wrap-around tissue-guard housed in its own titled wraps folder with short descriptive text below. Book: Folio. 26 1pp. Printed paper-covered boards with red and black lettering on cover. Frontispiece b/w photograph showing Ben Shahn and M. Crampe. With one color and three b/w photographic reproductions. Includes essays by Bernarda Bryson Shahn Egal Feldman and Charles Westheimer as well as the letter "J'Accuse" by Emile Zola in Dreyfus' defense addressed to French President Félix Faure. The letter appeared in the Parisian newspaper "L'Aurore" on 13 January 1898. Letter in French with English translation. Remarkable portfolio in brand new condition still in publisher's box. Pochoir prints: 1 Captain Alfred Dreyfus an exemplary officer and member of the French General Staff who being a Jew was made scapegoat and condemned for a treasonable act that he did not commit. 2 Major Armand-Auguste-Ferdinand-Marie Mercier du Paty de Clam. There could not have been a worse choice for a fair preliminary interrogation of Dreyfus than a blundering and erratic busybody who felt himself honored by the assignment. A man of fertile and cruel imagination he had the soul of a medieval inquisitor. He was a violent anti-Semite. 3 Fernad Labori the lawyer represented an anomaly in French legal circles: a lonely voice crying out for justice in a corrupt world. Like his famous clients Zola Picquart and Dreyfus he was the subject of vicious attacks - including an attempted assassination. Like them he attained the stature of a moral hero in the United States. He was a handsome man full of vitality with "lungs of steel." 4 Georges Picquart was widely recognized as one of France's most promising young officers. Calm clear-eyed with slightly ironical honesty a brainy dreamer of a type much more common among artists than soldiers he loved music spoke German English and Spanish with equal fluency and excelled in mathematics and the military arts. It was to Picquart that Dreyfus was to owe his life Picquart destroying his own in the process. 5 The Experts. The handwriting specialists accused by Zola of conspiracy and fraud. 6 Marie-Charles-Ferdinand-Walsin-Esterhazy. The son of a French General of an illegitimate branch of the Hungarian Esterhazys was the man who actually peddled the French military secrets to the German military attaché in Paris. He was so utterly bored by his bourgeois world that he attempted to find relief in heroism and knavery. He was a gambler and adventurer but without purpose a man possessed of a fantastic and sardonic humour. 7 Labori and Picquart remained unwilling to accept any final accommodation by the courts less than the full revision of the guilty verdicts. 8 Paleologue and demange the one a witness the other an honored lawyer defender of Dreyfus. El nombre de Al Zeqaq es Ali Ben Kacem Al Fassi originario de Fez que fue un erudito de la doctrina islámica Maleki la dominante en el occidente islámico. El contenido no solo es religioso sino jurÃdico ya que explica interpretaciones y jurisprudencias de la doctrina Maleki en muchos temas de la vida incluso financieros como se ha podido detectar en el texto. Taoudi Ben Souda murió en 1795. Estos escritos lo más probable es que estuviesen redactados en árabe clásico y lo que hizo EL HAWARI creemos fue transcribir estos textos con comentarios al árabe occidental marroquà para mayor comprensión de los estudiosos marroquÃes de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX.
