190132177Buffalo: The Courier Co 1901. First Edition. Soft cover. Good. Bound soft cover cut in the shape of a Buffalo head. Front and rear covers are a color lithograph illustration of a Buffalo head. Title in light blue on the front cover. Spine is backed by a thin piece of black linen tape. Light edge wear to the covers. A small scuff mark on the rear cover and a small chip to the tip of the Buffalo horn on the front cover. Small pin hole pierces the covers and text possibly once threaded. <br /> <br /> Souvenir autograph booklet contains 40 leaves of black and white photograph scenes of the Pan-Am Exhibition on the front sides. 62 inscriptions and autographs written on the blank versos of 37 of 40 leaves 80 pages. The original owner appears to be Emilie Hommel of Sandusky Ohio. Many of the inscriptions are signed to her. A later owner inscription in pencil written on the blank verso of the front cover: "Among my Collection John G. Knauer sp. 1412 Erie Blvd Sandusky O Nov. 11/1955" 62 counted autographs and inscriptions from vendors and attendees of the Exposition dated from late October to November 2 1901. Locations signed from contributors include the States of New York Connecticut Delaware Minnesota Nebraska Illinois Indiana Michigan Florida Georgia Virginia California New York Ohio and North Carolina. Other places signed include Washington D. C. Mexico City Ontario Toronto and Africa. The inscription from Africa is written in half English and half Arabic languages from "Fort National Algerie Africa". Another inscription is written in the Spanish language. A few of the vendors provided the number of their booth in their inscriptions. <br /> <br /> A sample of the inscriptions include:<br /> <br /> "Claude M. The fair occupied 350 acres 1.4 km2 of land on the western edge of what is now Delaware Park extending from Delaware Avenue to Elmwood Avenue and northward to Great Arrow Avenue.The exposition is most remembered because President William McKinley was shot by an anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Temple of Music on September 6 1901. First edition of this wonderfully illustrated depiction of the furnishings artworks silver American cut glass stained-glass windows and more all displayed at the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia. Following the lead of the 1851 & 1862 Exhibitions the 1853-54 New York Exhibition and others the Centennial served as a vast space for thousands of vendors and manufacturers to display their wares. Many American artists were featured and these World’s Fairs served as key influences on designers decorators artists architects and the arts. Two albumen photographs sized 4.5 x 3.75 in. featuring upper scalloped corners mounted on 10 x 8 in. embossed studio board w/o photographer’s imprint beveled edges textured boards simulating framed in board slight overexposure still two VG images from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. These two scarce souvenir albumen photograph capture World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 with throngs of visitors strolling through the manicured grounds. Vernacular photography and personal cameras were strictly controlled at the 1893 White City with nearly all who had not paid the $ 2.00 camera fee forced to store them in lockers before entering the grounds. Arnold 1844-1927 was prior to the Fair an obscure Buffalo NY photographer who had shot the 1901 Pan-American Exposition and had been initially contracted to photograph the construction of the 1893 World’s Fair but proved to be such an excellent architectural photographer he became the Chief of the Fair’s Dept. of Photography. In exchange for an annual fee of five dollars the subscriber received an engraving equal to the value of the subscription as well as the opportunity for an American student to study in Europe for two years subsidized by the Union. The final two pages advertise the engravings held by the Art-Union. Among those listed under the "Committee of Reference" are Washington Irving and N.P. Ellis. unknown books

In holograph on the lower margin is " At Brennan & Davis' Monday & Tuesday Apr 20th & 21st." Faint foxing else very good. The firm of Radtke Lauckner & Co. were publishers and importers of etchings engravings and photographs located at 6 East 18th Street New York during the 1890's. Apparently they arranged traveling exhibitions of their wares at various locations; this elaborate invitation was for a showing at Brennan & Davis' a jewelry stationary and book store in Bradford Pennsylvania. <br/><br/> Radtke, Lauckner & Co unknown books
