The views included here include the Agricultural Building; Board of Finance Buildings; Machinery Hall interior with the Corliss Engine operating ni the distance; Horticultural Hall along with the Main Entrance and the Exposition grounds. One of the most interesting of the series shows the vast Main Building pavilion under construction with drainage pipes strewn around in the fore-ground while the immense trusses and structural elements slowly march towards the viewer. Most of these images were originally shot by the Centennial Photographic Co. who had proved to be quite successful during the Centennial and the photographers were in great demand through and after the Exhibition which featured over 10 million visitors. Released in a slightly reduced format and licensed out to Underwood & Underwood later Keystone and many others these offered visitors a cut-rate viewing experience. Barker 1844-1894 gained renown originally working for one of Ontario Canada’s leading photographers and later became well-known for his majestic photos of Niagara Falls before a Feb. 1870 destroyed his photo studio although the 800 stereoview negatives were preserved. He later began traveling to shoot views around the United States and released Exposition related images. See: Centennial Photographic Co. Slight wear including a ca. 3" separation at front joint near crown; a few leaves with faint marginal soil or foxing away from printed area; complete and Very Good.

One of presumably very few presentation albums presented by the Century of Progress Exposition to prominent backers and members of Chicago's elite. The photographs all produced by the Exposition's official photographer the Kaufman & Fabry Company are of the highest quality exceptional for capturing the high modernism of the period and indeed of the event itself which is still considered a pivotal moment in the popularization of the modernist aesthetic in the United States as well as the introduction of the "Art Deco" style. Significantly the plan and most of the Exposition's infrastructure were designed by the young architects Louis Skidmore and Nathaniel Owings who a few years later would go on to found the epoch-defining firm Skidmore Owings & Merrill whose high-rise office towers came to personify the skylines of many of America's major cities Chicago's in particular. Though no limitation is stated for this album given the expense of production we would surmise that no more than a few dozen would have been produced. OCLC notes ten copies in American institutions each with presentations to a different recipient; a few others traced at auction and in commerce. unknown

First Edition Thus. . 8vo publisher’s green cloth 107 pp. Some tearing and fraying to boards particularly at head of spine text block excellent very good minus overall. Very Good. The scarce Paris Universal Exposition edition of J.P. Whitney’s early title on the silver mines of Colorado. Whitney a wealthy sportsman from Boston with investments in Colorado traveled as the sole commissioner from Colorado to the Paris Universal Exposition in an effort to entice foreign investment in the mining industry which was suffering from a poor reputation as the costs of extraction grew higher. Whitney had published this title in pamphlet form a year earlier. Whitney shipped his own collection of Colorado minerals to France where it was the most extensive of any of the North American regions to be displayed receiving a gold medal from Napoleon III. A new title on Colorado minerals Colorado in the United States of America: Schedule of Ores Contributed by Sundry Persons to the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867 With Some Information about the Region and its Resources. Whitney also brought with him copies of his pamphlet in a special hardcover edition which we offer here. This is the second example we find on the market. Whitney would gain great popularity in Colorado for his efforts which did much to improve its standing. J.P. Whitney unknown
