196382862New York: Terry Dintenfass 1963. First Edition. Original lithographed poster with text and illustrations printed in dark red and black on thick cream laid paper measuring 48cm x 66.25cm 18 7/8" x 26 1/8". Mild handling a few faint creases from being rolled with a half-dozen foxed spots; unbacked; Near Fine.

A striking poster by Lawrence designed to promote his first solo exhibition at Terry Dintenfass Inc. in New York. The illustration was derived from Lawrence's 1963 tempera painting "Two Rebels" "showing four white policemen carrying two black men. The heads of some fifteen witnesses crowd in. In the poster that number was reduced to ten heads that float like moons of light above a protester and his police handlers with their billy clubs dangling from their wrists" Over the Line: The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence pp.174-175. Paintings like "Two Rebels" "Soldiers and Students" and "Four Students" were almost certainly triggered by news photos and television images of the immediate events of 1960-62 in the South. The poster is not separately listed in OCLC though a signed and numbered lithograph of the image edition of 50 is held at the LC. 82862. Terry Dintenfass unknown
9006Seattle 1970. 24 loose sketches from 6x4" to 12x11" approx. 16 smaller and 8 larger on various papers mostly torn from sketchbooks and one on a brown paper bag. Sketchbook 8x6" containing about 20 more. Several of the smaller loose sketches along with a few from the book are signed. Also included are 6 exhibition ads featuring Cumming's work 3 being broadsides of his design and 1 being a short booklet. Bit of moisture staining to upper edge of sketch book and a couple of the programs. Sketch paper toned and occasionally smudged. Generally very good.

Tremendous assemblage of original sketches by William Cumming 1917-2010 of the Northwest School. Cumming was close with Morris Graves whom he met doing jobs for the WPA's Federal Art Project as well as Margaret Callahan Seattle Star and Seattle Times journalist and editor. She encouraged him to develop his own style which would become very figurative focusing on daily life and activities with use of light and shadow to create contrast. He was known for depicting people and animals with minimal facial details but with a focus on body language and posture which can be seen in these sketches.

Cumming was also quite political and controversial being an outspoken Stalinist. He became a member of the Communist party in 1945 alienating him from the arts community he had become a part of. His career again took off in the late 1950s from when a few of the present sketches are dated after quitting the Communist party. This was the most productive time in his career.

Cumming's works have been sold at auction as well as Northwest Galleries such as Woodside/Braseth and are held at the Seattle Art Museum Frye Art Museum Museum of Northwest Art and other institutions. . unknown

WALTER-FILM000411No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Vintage original 22 x 28"" 55 x 70 cm. half sheet poster USA. Joel McCrea Laraine Day Herbert Marshall George Sanders Albert Bassermann Robert Benchley Edmund Gwenn dir: Alfred Hitchcock; United Artists. Academy Award-nominated classic for which Hitchcock beautifully blended suspense action and comedy. There was also a bold political statement made just as the entire world went to war that neutrality will not work when others are bent on war. This film along with Rebecca which would win many of the Oscars that year made a huge impression on America during Hitchcock's first year of Hollywood film making. Gary Cooper and Joan Fontaine were the director's first choices for the leads played by McCrea and Day. This half sheet has a much stronger design than the film's one sheet poster and it is always a frustratingly elusive piece to find. This poster has been cleaned and is in beautifully preserved condition paper-backed with the strong center fold addressed with minor touch-up. Internal creases and minor edge tears have been addressed as well VERY GOOD-FINE. unknown books

The classic epic version of the d'Ennery/Cormon novel"" The Two Orphans"" with screenplay by director Griffith and the perfect vehicle for the great Gish sisters. They are seen here during their characters' more fortunate earlier period. In this film two sisters travel to Paris to see if the one sister can be cured of her blindness; while there they are separated the seeing one abducted and the other sister becomes lost as the French Revolution rages around them. Stunning hand color and the most desirable card showing the sisters. There is one tiny chip at lower left and small repairs to the other three blank corners and some minor creasing NEAR FINE. unknown books
