WALTER-FILM007562United Artists. No binding. Fine. Los Angeles: United Artists 1967. Set of fifty-four vintage original 8 x 10" 20 x 25 cm borderless black-and-white photos fine. In the Heat of the Night is a classic mystery drama film directed by Norman Jewison produced by Walter Mirisch and starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. It tells the story of Virgil Tibbs Poitier a Black police detective from Philadelphia who becomes embroiled in a murder investigation in a small town in Mississippi. The film was adapted by Stirling Silliphant from John Ball's 1965 novel of the same name. At the 40th Academy Awards the film was nominated for seven Oscars winning five including Best Picture Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Rod Steiger. Quincy Jones' score featuring a title song performed by Ray Charles was nominated for a Grammy Award. The success of the film spawned two film sequels featuring Poitier. A particularly famous line in the film comes immediately after Gillespie mocks the name "Virgil": Gillespie: "That's a funny name for a nigger boy that comes from Philadelphia! What do they call you up there" Tibbs annoyed: "They call me Mister Tibbs!" In 2002 the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally historically or aesthetically significant". Original printed folder; four graphically designed single leaves with texts and designs by Marcelle Cahn Richard Orton Marcel Mariën and Raoul Hausmann among others as well as five folded posters with texts and images inter alia by William S. Burroughs Jefim Golyscheff and Marcel Janco mainly typographically designed and manufactured using printmaking techniques; and one vinyl record with recordings by Henri Chopin Bengt Emil Johnson Sten Hanson and Jacques Bekaert. Folder with signs of use; else good or better. Single issue of the rare avant-garde journal which Henri Chopin edited published and partly produced in his own home. Influenced by the Dadaists Chopin unlike the Lettrists was not only interested in pictorial poetry but above all in tonal poetry. Lettrism did not go far enough for him in terms of the dissolution of linguistic conventions and the use of new media. In 1958 he took over the editorship of the conventional poetry magazine "Cinquième Saison" in which he published early reflections on phonetic poetry. The last issue under this title contained a record and among other things the poet René Ghil's prophecy: "In 50 years the poet will be operating phonetic machines." Number 20/21 was then published under the new title "OU". This underlined the radical change in the journal which from then on resembled "multimedia compendia" or "poetic wonder bags" Marc Matter filled with loose leaves screen prints posters fanfolds relief images typographic collages sometimes even three-dimensional objects and regularly a record. In this way Dadaism Futurism Ultra-Lettrism Fluxus Concrete Poetry etc. were mixed together. Chopin consistently self-published the elaborate journal for ten years. He and his wife worked endlessly at home to put together the individual issues and sent them out all over the world. Cf. It is an art sponsored by kings and queens, patriarchs and bishops, clergy, monks, friars, knights and soldiers, aristocrats and merchants, all men and women of means, who came as pilgrims, Crusaders, settlers, and men of commerce to the Holy Land. The artists are Franks and Italians born and/or resident in the Holy Land, Westerners who traveled to the Latin East, Eastern Christians, and even Muslims, who worked for Crusader patrons. Notes begin on p. 561 and go to 711. Unopened CD-rom at back contains a complete set of more than 500 illustrations from Crusader manuscripts.

Sur la place de la Bastille Charles Lagrange membre de la Charbonnerie futur gouverneur de l’Hôtel de Ville et futur député s’assied sur le trône royal amené du Palais-Royal pour être brûlé. Beaucoup d’artistes sont solidaires du peuple qui va imposer la IIe République. Soucieux d’endiguer le chômage le gouvernement provisoire instaure dès le 26 février les « Ateliers nationaux ». Mais bientôt la victoire des républicains modérés aux élections des 23 et 24 avril qui se tiennent pour la première fois au suffrage universel vient ruiner les espoirs d’une révolution sociale par les urnes. Au regard de leur échec économique et de la menace révolutionnaire que représentent ces 110 000 ouvriers pour la plupart désœuvrés les Ateliers nationaux sont dissous le 21 juin. Du 23 au 26 juin de nombreux ouvriers jetés dans les rues de Paris s’insurgent au cours d’une terrible bataille de rues : 4 000 ouvriers d’un côté et 1 600 gardes et soldats de l’autre sont tués. Sur ordre du ministre de la Guerre Cavaignac bientôt surnommé « prince de sang » les émeutes sont durement réprimées. A man suffering from amnesia is revealed as an imposter when the doctor -- whose place he has taken at a mental hospital -- is found dead. A woman psychiatrist at the hospital who has fallen in love with him works with him to discover who he really is and to find out what happened to the deceased physician. One of the earlier films to explore the area of psychoanalysis brought to the screen with brilliant suspense and creativity by masters of their craft including producer Selznick who had a big interest in the subject writer Ben Hecht composer Miklós Rózsa Academy Award winner and director Hitchcock. There was a best picture nomination too and the Academy was mentioned on much of the poster art as Ingrid Bergman had just won for her performance in the suspenseful Gaslight. The romantic aura of the film is at the core of this poster presentation. This poster has been beautifully restored and cleaned. The missing top blank are for the theatre information has been replaced. There was a crease running down the right side of the image area which has been addressed as well as a minor crease to the bottom left corner. Really clean NEAR FINE. unknown books

Cardboard portfolio with ties and tipped-on facsimile of woman's head. 50 leaves inside contents 46 of 47 called for images 1 duplicate image one uncalled-for image and reproduction of written text by Pennell. "This unique collection of drawings was contributed to the "American Artist's War Emergency Fund" by forty-seven American artists to be disposed of for the benefit of this fund." Second leaf is a lithograph of a handwritten brief essay on lithography by Joseph Pennell. 37th drawing in the portfolio is also by Pennell. This copy has two copies of a contribution by Henry Walker and lacks the contribution listed for Ben Foster. There is however an unlisted contribution by G.H.
