1849WRCAM49949New York 1849. 1p. of a bifolium docketed on verso of second bifolium leaf. Mailing folds slight edge discoloration else fine. An intriguing note regarding life insurance for a forty-niner traveling to California in 1849 with Henry Webb and John Woodhouse Audubon. The note reads: "Langdon H. Havens wants a life insurance permit for California to go over the Overland Route in company with persons bearing dispatches from our Government in a Company of 100 or more. He wants to leave for Washington immediately." Perhaps the twenty-six-year- old Haven sometimes spelled Havens originally intended to join a safe government- sponsored expedition from Washington but he was in fact among the 100 Forty-Niners who embarked on a famously ill-fated overland expedition led by Army Colonel Henry Webb with John Woodhouse Audubon son of the famous ornithologist as his second in command which left New York on February 8. <br> <br> The company proceeded by ship train stagecoach and riverboat to New Orleans and from there by steamer across the Gulf of Mexico to the mouth of the Rio Grande where they arrived on March 13 - an odd overland route dictated by Webb a veteran of the Mexican-American War. There disaster struck. A dozen men died of cholera the company's money was stolen and leadership conflict led Webb to leave the company with a dozen followers. Some of the remaining stalwarts including Haven followed Audubon onward trekking for seven months through Mexico and Arizona the survivors finally reaching San Diego in November. Some then took a boat to San Francisco; others continued overland to the gold fields. As meticulously recorded by Audubon a naturalist and painter in his own right the entire venture has gone down in history as "one of the most poorly-planned" Forty-Niner expeditions "on record." Haven though nearly dying en route was one of the fortunate few who "made it to California." An appealing note dated in the famous year of the California Gold Rush that eerily anticipates the dangers inherent in overland travel in America in the 19th century. unknown books

Seven volumes are in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt text and decorations on the spine and with an illustrated paper label on the front boards. The eighth volume is a green cloth and green paper covered clam shell box which contains facsimiles of the maps from the expedition. The box is finished with details comparable to the other volumes. Each are small 4tos measuring 9" by 6". Volume I contains 374 pages of text; Volume II contains 386 pages; volume III contains 363 pages; volume IV contains 372 pages; volume V contains 395 pages; volume VI contains 280 pages; volume VII contains 534 pages and volume VIII contains the 16 page introduction to the atlas and index to the maps and all 71 individual maps labeled 1 through 54 all of which are in fine condition Dust jackets were not issued with this set. This set represents a facsimile reprint of the original 1905 edition of The American Philosophical Society which based its publication on the original documents in their library. The inscription states "This book is inscribed by the illustrator C.K. Berryman". 8vo. 20 by 16.5 cm. 74 1 pp. Cartoons are of the political luminaries of the day including many names still recognizable such as Elihu Root William Borah Taft TR Robert LaFolette Gifford Pinchot Henry Stimson Woodrow Wilson and on and on. Clever rhymes for the ABC and then clever variants of well-known nursery rhymes. The drawings capture the persons depicted with great fidelity yet impressive economy. Berryman began his career as an artist for the patent office before joining the staff of "The Washington Post" in 1891 as an understudy for its chief cartoonist then becoming its official cartoonist in 1896. In 1907 he left the Post for "The Washington Star" where he drew cartoons until his death. He is probably best known for inspiring the Teddy Bear. The Gridiron Club was founded in 1885 and remains one of the most prestigious press clubs in the nation. The Gridiron Dinner is an annual rite in Washington often attended by the sitting President. Double columns in Greek and Latin. Eusebius bishop of Caesarea b.260-70 and contemporary with Constantine the Great is rightly called the Father of Church History. "The position of Eusebius at the close of the period of persecution and in the opening of the period of the imperial establishment of Christianity and his employment of many ancient documents some of which have since been lost give these works a peculiar value" CE. The work was later added to by others including Socrates Sozomen Theodoret and Evagrius. The best and most important edition is that of Henri de Valois Valesius who published his first edition of the Greek text with a new Latin translation and with copious critical and explanatory notes at Paris in 1659 which also included Eusebius' Vita Constantini the remainder of the collection of the early Greek historians of the Church was published in two subsequent folio volumes ending in 1673. "For the elucidation of Eusebius' History we owe more to Valesius than to any other man. His edition of the text was an immense advance upon that of Stephanus and has formed the basis of all subsequent editions while his notes are a perfect storehouse of information from which all annotators of Eusebius have extensively drawn. Migne's edition Opera II 45-906 is a reprint of Valesius' edition of 1659" Schaff Post-Nicene Fathers 98. ABPC shows only one copy has come up at auction in the last 40 years at Quaritch in 1984.
