An iconic poster protesting the arrest of the Chicago 8 on conspiracy charges relating to the protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The group originally as eight members consisted of Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin founders of the Youth International Party YIPPIES Tom Hayden a co-founder in Students for a Democratic Society Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale whose case would be declared a mistrial during the trial leading to his exclusion from the Chicago 7 David Dellinger and Rennie Davis members of the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam MOBE and John Froines and Lee Weiner. The address 28 E. Jackson was a building where Rennie Davis rented a space so it is possible that the MOBE printed this though we cannot confirm. unknown books

"Kincho or Rikkyo or Rikkei or Ryukei Sugita 1786-1846 the son of the famous Gempaku Sugita published a work in five volumes in 1830 this is wrong or a typo; the correct date is 1832 entitled Yoka shinsen which was a translation of the Dutch translation of Joseph Jakob von Plenck's Compendium institutionum chirurgicarum. Viennae: R. Graeffer 1780. The Yoka shinsen was important as the first complete translation of a Dutch surgical work into the Japanese language."-Mestler A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books. III p. 157. Vols. I and II are concerned with tumors; Vol. III with ulcers; Vol. IV with wounds; and the fifth volume deals with pharmacology. In this volume many of the drugs appear with Latin and Dutch names and Japanese translations. Inserted table & plate imperfect lacking 'folded' left side approx. 1 - 1.5". 4to: ¢4 -¢1 a half-title a2 a3 B1 A4 -A1 C - 2B4 2C2. <br/><br/>Bohme a German philosophical mystic who had a profound influence on such later intellectual movements as idealism and Romanticism. Born of poor parents in Goerlitz Germany as a boy he tended cattle later becoming a shoemaker marrying & fathering 4 children. Boehme at the robust age of 37 in 1612 wrote his first treatise Aurora oder Die Morgenroete in Aufgang. In 1613 an unauthorized copy of the manuscript was copied and circulated by Karl von Ender. Its reception "raised him out of his homely sphere and made him the centre of a local circle of liberal thinkers considerably above him in station and culture." However the local pastor primarius of Gorlitz Gregorius Richter leveled a charge of heresy. The local muncipal council administered an admonishment to no further "meddle in such matters." This charge Boehme publicly followed for 5 years. In 1618 Boehme again started writing expository & polemical treatises. The majority of his works were written though not formally published from 1619 - 1624. A second major work Der Weg zu Christo was published in 1624 and signaled a renewal of clerical hostility. Boehem however was destined to suffer but a short period of this second persecution; he died of an illness on 17 November 1624. Boehme has been said to have a "fertility of ideas" and a "trasncendent greatness of religious insight." Boehme was studied by Sir Isaac Newton and influenced the work Henry More as well as and especially William Law 1686 - 1761. Xl Questions concerning the Soule was translated by the English mystic John Sparrow in collaboration with John Ellstone & financed by Humphrey Blunden. This the first of several works by Boehme that Sparrow & Ellstone were to translate into English between 1644 - 1662. Boehme proved to be highly popular in England where there were regular societies of Behmenists at the time. This work XL Questions went into a second edition in 1648 and a third edition in 1665. 11th EB. A scarce title in the Boehme canon. We find no copies currently offered via the major on-line databases OCLC records but 4 institional cc and the work has only appeared at auction 3 times in the last 25 years the last in 1989. China: Prefaces dated 1754 & 1756.<br /> First edition and very rare not in WorldCat of this collection of the poetry and prose of Ren Huang 1683-1768 one of "the foremost lyrical poets" Ko p. 92 see below of the Guangdong region and a member of the artistic circle whose center was Gu Erniang a famous woman inkstone carver whose shop was located in Zhuanszhu Lane in the imperial city of Suzhou. This collectors and scholars of this circle were both patrons and clients of Gu Erniang and in fact Ren's main asset late in life was his collection of precious carved inkstones.<br /> Ren 1683-1768 whose literary name was Xintian or Shentian Ren was a native of Yongful county in Fujian. Born into a well-educated family of generations of government officials he learned poetry and painting as a child. He received the juren degree in 1702 and served as a county magistrate in Sihui in Guangdong province.<br /> Most of the poetry in this work is from manuscripts and appears here for the first time whereas the essays and other prose writings were previously published. The second preface dated 1754 is signed by Tingheng Xu and the third preface of 1756 is signed by Tiaoyuan Sang 1695-1771 scholar.<br /> A nice set but with two leaves of text replaced in early manuscript. Several natural paper flaws not touching text and mended. With the seal of Yosaburo Takekoshi 1865-1950 Japanese historian and politician. Landy." The recipient Glenn Goldman founded Book Soup in 1975 an independently owned bookstore on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood specializing in art music film photography design and fiction. American psychotherapist Dr. Eugene E. Landy was best known for his unconventional psychological treatments especially for his treatment of Wilson in the 1970s and 80s in which he essentially took control of his life monitoring him 24 hours a day with a team of assistants to keep him sober. The treatment was later deemed unethical by Californian courts and was later dramatized in the 2014 biographical film Love & Mercy in which Landy is portrayed by Paul Giamatti. 6952Scroll 420 x 12000 mm. with elaborate silk brocade endpaper at beginning. Japan: 1880-86. This beautifully rendered scroll of natural history paintings was executed with one exception by Akio or Keigu Yamamoto 1827-1903 Confucian scholar doctor botanist and highly gifted artist. He was born in Kyoto the son of the prominent doctor and botanist Boyo Yamamoto 1778-1859 the direct disciple of Ono Ranzan 1729-1810 the famous professor of botany who wrote a series of classic botanical books. Keigu "continued his father's work in his private school in Osaka and spent his time organizing meetings that were regularly attended by both honzogaku amateurs and Japanese biologists."-Federico Marcon The Knowledge of Nature and the Nature of Knowledge in Early Modern Japan p. 301. Keigu travelled widely throughout Japan drawing plants and animals. He gave botanical instruction to the Meiji emperor and other members of the royal family. Keigu also wrote several standard works on materia medica and left many sketch books and scrolls which entered the Kyoto rare book trade in 1932; some of these were published only in the 1980s. All of his sketch books and scrolls offered valuable and unique information regarding native plants and animals as well as those that had been introduced into Japan. Our scroll contains 14 very finely executed color paintings of plants birds and animals. The paintings are quite unique in their remarkable spaciousness. For instance the image of the octopus is 1410 mm. long. The images include a most unusual morning glory three joined sheets and 1190 mm. long; an edible yellow lily two joined sheets 800 mm.; an ungei flower two joined sheets 795 mm.; a magnificent red toki a now-endangered crane species three joined sheets 765 mm.; a large akowa tsuru another species of crane three joined sheets 815 mm.; a young white crane three joined sheets 935 mm.; a sea lion umiuso painted in many shades of delicate black two joined sheets 545 mm.; a carp two joined sheets 597 mm.; an octopus four joined sheets; a chameleon three joined sheets 844 mm. dated "1880"; a deer antler two sheets 545 mm.; a "Dutch" dog two sheets 545 mm.; a lion seen at exhibitions in Tokyo and Kyoto two sheets 640 mm. with a seal and note stating this was the work of "Ariyoshi" dated "1886"; and two camels two sheets 545 mm. long. Four of the paintings have the signature and seal of Yamamoto and another painting - the final - has the seal only. Three of the paintings have additional text by Yamamoto regarding where seen and painted alternative regional names date etc. Very fine condition preserved in a new wooden box. Illustrated with a portrait of Bogdan and four other full-page illustrations. Bound in original army linen over boards with mimeographed illustration mounted on the front cover. Small contemporary name in ink on front free endpaper slight staining and rubbing to the boards small marginal tears to endpapers very good. A very scarce book of poetry by the Ukrainian poet Bogdan Bora 1920-97 written and published at a prison camp in Rimini Italy about one year after World War II. Bora had been captured by British forces and sent to the prison camp in Rimini where he spent the following two years and published three books of poetry including this collection the title of which translated as "On the Road." Bora's poems written in Ukrainian are moving works evocative of the turbulent era. The cover design and a full-page portrait of Bogdan Bora were made by fellow inmate Volodimir Kaplun. In 1947 Bora was moved to Britain where he was given his freedom and lived out the rest of his days. Very scarce. OCLC locates only six copies in institutional holdings worldwide.
