When we say that Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926 not 'in the 16th year of the reign of George V' or 'in the year 2678 after the foundation of Rome' or in the '2nd year of the 481st Olympiad' we are indebted to the Venerable Bede."-Printing & the Mind of Man 16n. "Bede's greatest practical effect was on the Western calendar. His decisions beginning the year calculation of Easter names of days and months calculations of eras and so forth in most instances finally determined usage that was only refined not changed by Gregorian reform."-D.S.B. A most attractive sammelband of two well-illustrated books in an attractive contemporary blind-stamped binding probably made at the Stavelot monastery in Belgium. I. First collected and illustrated edition of the scientific writings of the Venerable Bede including De Natura Rerum dealing with cosmology and natural history and De Temporum Ratione a work on chronology that still exercises a considerable influence over our daily life today. This edition was edited and commented upon by Joannes Noviomagus i.e. Jan van Bronchorst of Nijmegen 1494-1570 philosopher and mathematician then a professor of philosophy at the Collegium Montanum in Cologne. The inscription states "This book is inscribed by the illustrator C.K. Berryman". 8vo. 20 by 16.5 cm. 74 1 pp. Cartoons are of the political luminaries of the day including many names still recognizable such as Elihu Root William Borah Taft TR Robert LaFolette Gifford Pinchot Henry Stimson Woodrow Wilson and on and on. Clever rhymes for the ABC and then clever variants of well-known nursery rhymes. The drawings capture the persons depicted with great fidelity yet impressive economy. Berryman began his career as an artist for the patent office before joining the staff of "The Washington Post" in 1891 as an understudy for its chief cartoonist then becoming its official cartoonist in 1896. In 1907 he left the Post for "The Washington Star" where he drew cartoons until his death. He is probably best known for inspiring the Teddy Bear. The Gridiron Club was founded in 1885 and remains one of the most prestigious press clubs in the nation. The Gridiron Dinner is an annual rite in Washington often attended by the sitting President. Thomas "Blind Tom" Wiggins Bethune 1849-1908 an African-American autistic savant and musical prodigy was born a slave on a plantation in Harris County Georgia near Columbus and began his musical career at an early age on his master's piano. At eight Tom was hired out to a promoter who toured him extensively in the United States earning prodigious sums of money; his former master took him to Europe in 1866 for a successful tour there. A series of custodial battles and other problems essentially ended Blind Tom's career in the mid-1890s. "In the wave of euphoria after Manassas Tom turned his hypersensitive ear into the music of the big-mouthed guns. He then framed these sounds with the South's triumphant version of events before composing what many believed was his masterpiece . Tom's impressionistic musical description of the battle pits the harmony of the right hand against the discord of the left. An insistent bass conjures the trudge of marching columns tonal clusters evoke the roar of cannon and musketry. A brooding soundscape then ducks weaves and punches its way into a medley of popular and patriotic songs . discord tugging at the heels of melody until it finally explodes into the chaos of a harem-scarem finale" from Deidre O'Connell's "The Ballad of Blind Tom Slave Pianist America's Lost Genius". The first edition of "The Battle of Manassas" was published in 1866 by Root & Cady in Chicago; this second edition including a catalogue of other war related pieces of sheet music available from the publisher was issued by Brainard's in 1884. Both editions are uncommon in institutional holdings and in trade. Not in Dichter & Shapiro Levy or Wolf. A very scarce book of poetry by the Ukrainian poet Bogdan Bora 1920-97 written and published at a prison camp in Rimini Italy about one year after World War II. Bora had been captured by British forces and sent to the prison camp in Rimini where he spent the following two years and published three books of poetry including this collection the title of which translated as "On the Road." Bora's poems written in Ukrainian are moving works evocative of the turbulent era. The cover design and a full-page portrait of Bogdan Bora were made by fellow inmate Volodimir Kaplun. In 1947 Bora was moved to Britain where he was given his freedom and lived out the rest of his days. Very scarce. OCLC locates only six copies in institutional holdings worldwide. First separate edition originally published as the second part of the author's Observationes circa viventia 1691. Our edition - which is actually the original printing of the second part with a new title-page - is very rare with only one copy located by WorldCat. Buonanni 1738-1725 one of the most learned Jesuits of his time was a pupil of Athanasius Kircher and succeeded his master as teacher of mathematics at the Collegium Romanum. This work is one of the earliest Italian treatises on microscopy. It contains interesting observations on early microscopes and a precise description of Buonanni's own compound microscopes which are illustrated on two plates. The rest of the plates show objects seen through the microscope including a number of illustrations of insects. "The quality of his illustrations of various insects was excellent - particularly those of the fly louse mite flea and mosquito. Indeed his drawings of the Culex pipiens common house mosquito are the best of the seventeenth century."-D.S.B. II p. 591. Very good copy.
