169568499Lipsiae Leipzig: Thomas Fritsch 1695. Hardcover. Very good. Silius c.28-c.103 was consul in 68 and governor of the province of Asia in 69; he sought no further office but lived thereafter on his estates as a literary man and collector. He revered the work of Cicero whose Tusculan villa he owned and that of Virgil whose tomb at Naples he likewise owned and near which he lived. His epic Punica in 17 books on the second War with Carthage 218-202 BC draws heavily on Livy's account. Conceived as a contrast between two great nations and their supporting gods championed by the two great heroes Scipio and Hannibal his poem is written in pure Latin and smooth verse filled throughout with echoes of Virgil above all and other poets. Includes supplementary material by the German classicist Christoph Cellarius. 22 586 52. Frontispiece engraving with a title page decoration and six folding maps. 12mo. In a contemporary full vellum binding. Typical mild browning to the contents with a negligible spot to the top edge. Minor soiling to the vellum; otherwise very good. Thomas Fritsch hardcover books

191673489London: Martin Secker 1916. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. The first edition in English translated from the Russian by John Cournos and Richard Aldington. The author's most famous novel which recounts the story of a morally corrupt schoolteacher going insane and paranoid in an unnamed Russian provincial town. The omniscient third-person narrator allowed Sologub to combine his Symbolist tendencies and the tradition of Russian Realism in which he engaged throughout his earlier novels a style similar to Maupassant's fantastic realism. Folio half-sheet 1 p. 20 lines name of the recipient on verso 2 vertical and 4 horizontal folds evidence of wax seal on verso old tape repair at top margin not affecting text ink gall corrosion on outer margin affecting one word. Preserved in mylar sleeve. An extremely curious provincial Scottish letter dated 1790 which incorporates misspellings based on non-standard sociolects of the Scottish dialect. While "worthless" relics such as this were almost invariably discarded they remain of the great interest in Ortheopy the study of pronunciation. Indeed much of what is known about Vulgar Latin pronunciation is preserved in graffiti in the ruins of Pompei. <br/><br/>Concerning the content of the letter: William Steuart or Stewart writes to John Adam Esq. describing water damage to four rooms in Dumbarton Castle: two were newly painted the other two newly wall-papered. An associate suggested that he procure a carpenter in Inversnaid to the amount of GBP 35 and therefore "if you have any masonwork to do I can do it at the time."<br/><br/>The letter is signed by Steuart but was clearly dictated by him to an unnamed scribe. Our transcription of the letter retains the original spelling:<br/><br/>"Dumbarton May 24th 1790. 667022 leaves including some blanks or pages ruled in ink for entries. Agenda format 315 x 100 mm. stitched as issued uncut. Nuremberg: 1598. A fascinating document of a type that rarely survives: the manuscript account book for the spring 1598 Leipzig fair of Hans Straub I or the Elder 1541-1610 the prominent Nuremberg gold- and silversmith alderman and son-in-law of Wenzel Jamnitzer the best-known German goldsmith of his time. The first leaf bears Straub's hallmark interwined initials "HS" over an arrow pointing upward within a plain shield & also containing the inscription "No. 72". Our manuscript sheds important light on the business relations in the late 16th century between the Nuremberg goldsmiths and their trade at the Leipzig fairs. Our account book is a list of sales orders and expenditures of Nuremberg goldsmith Hans Straub the Elder during the Leipzig Easter fair held in May 1598. While Straub is not expressly named he can be identified by his hallmark on the first leaf. At the fair trade was done in goblets rings knife-sheaths cutlery jewelry gemstones etc. Several business partners are named including the Nuremberg goldsmiths Heinrich Hahn Haan David Lauer and Paulus Koch. As an example of a transaction we see that the council of Halle paid over 33 florins for a goblet. In 1596 Straub was elected Alderman of the Artisans the most elevated and honorable office to which a Nuremberg artisan could aspire. Straub retained this position until his death in 1610. In 1569 he married Anna daughter of the famous goldsmith Wenzel Jamnitzer. On his father-in-law's death in 1585 Straub inherited his casting molds and used them extensively in his own creations. Despite his long period of activity relatively few pieces made by Hans Straub have survived see Nürnberger Goldschmiedekunst 1541-1868 2007 ed. by Karin Tebbe et al. Vol. I p. 409. In fine condition. ❧ The mark is similar to Marc Rosenberg Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen Frankfurt 1925 Vol. III no. 3969. unknown books

Large 8vo orig. wrappers wrappers somewhat soiled orig. block-printed title label on upper cover new stitching. Osaka or Kyoto: very likely issued privately Preface dated 1808. First edition posthumously published of this extremely rare work by Buzen Sumie 1734-1806 edited by his son Aizan. WorldCat locates no copy of our edition; there was a later edition issued in 1826 with rather different images and color palette. The Union Catalogue of Early Japanese Books does not record a copy. Small tray or pot landscapes - known in the Edo period as senkeiban - have their origins in 10th century China. The "trays" in Chinese zhan jing pan or penjing were made out of copper or pottery. They were filled with soil rocks pebbles sand plants and miniature trees forming elaborately conceived miniature garden landscapes. The landscapes are clearly Chinese in style with mountains and pagodas surrounded by the sea or rivers represented by pebbles or sand. Many of the created landscapes include miniature houses temples gates stairways etc. The descriptive text for many of the images discusses the unity and philosophy involved in the creation and depiction of these miniature landscapes. The extensive explanatory text at the end describes in very great detail how to create the landscapes materials used aesthetic considerations how to care for the plants and trees etc. Aizan Sumie has provided a most interesting two-page "Afterword" in which he describes the genesis of this book. Buzen Sumie a bonkei and bonsai artist in the Chinese style created many senkeiban and the images in this work are a representative selection of his creations. The selection was made by the publisher Tadataka Katsu who also wrote a highly complimentary preface. Sumie's teacher was Settei Tsukioka. Very good copy. One image has some soiling. Minor thumbing and soiling. ❧ Brown Block Printing & Book Illustration in Japan p. 208-referring to the 2nd ed. of 1826 which she calls "delightful.". unknown books

Occasional faint dampstaining but a fine copy. Engraved armorial bookplate of Count Dmitri Petrovich Boutourlin 1790-1849.</p> <p> First Minuziano Edition and the First Example of a Challenge to a Copyright. In 1508 Pope Leo X formerly Cardinal Giovanni de'Medici purchased the only surviving manuscript of the "lost" first six books of Tacitus's Annals which had earlier been stolen from the monastery of Corvey in Westphalia. Six year later Leo granted the Vatican librarian humanist Filippo Beroaldo the younger the exclusive right or privilegio to issue a printed edition the complete works of Tacitus including the previously unpublished "lost" books from the Corvey manuscript. Violators of the privilegio were threatened with excommunication. Beroaldo's Tacitus printed in Rome by Stephanus Guilleretus de Lotheringia was published in 1515.</p> <p> At the same time the Milanese printer Alessandro Minuziano undaunted by the fear of papal displeasure began preparing a word-for-word reprint of the Beroaldo Tacitus probably bribing one of Lotheringia's employees for sheets of the work as it was being printed. It is likely that Minuziano intended to issue his pirated edition around the same time as the legitimate one but the Pope got word of his scheme and the subsequent dispute over the privilegio forced Minuziano to suspend publication until the matter was resolved. The matter was serious especially as Leo X actively involved himself in issues of publication and censorship. The case was eventually resolved in Minuziano's favor and he added an appendix to the edition containing the key documents pertaining to the case. These included the papal privilege of November 14 1514 Minuziano's "supplication and prayers" to Leo X of March 30 1516 in which he defended himself remarkably by claiming ignorance of the Pope's privilegio and the papal letter of pardon dated September 7 1516 reiterating Minuziano's defense and granting Minuziano permission to publish his edition.</p> <p> This copy of the Minuziano Tacitus bears the bookplate of Dmitri Petrovich Boutourlin or Buturlin a Russian general statesman and military historian who became director of the Russian Imperial Public Library in 1843. A catalogue of Boutourlin's extensive private library was published in 1831.</p> . $12500 rebound by Sean Richards. Alessandro Minuziano unknown books
