An elegant edition with beautiful typography and ornamentation. <br/><br/>Thomas Corneille 1625-1709: playwright poet. To distinguish himself from his brother Pierre Corneille Thomas was known as “Monsieur Corneille.†He was one of the leading authors who began to produce plays during the Fronde and brought out even more plays than his brother Pierre: thirty-eight plays composed alone or in collaboration. His first tragedy Timocrate 1656 helped to restore the genre to popularity after the troubles of the Fronde. Although he was more attractive in manner and in conversation than Pierre he lacked Pierre's genius. Still "with Quinault he filled the interval in the history of the French drama between the zenith of Pierre Corneille and the advent of Racine" Harvey and Haseltine. <br/><br/>Although not as important a playwright as his brother Thomas wrote with great facility. He is credited with perfecting the French language as can be evidenced by this translation of Ovid begun shortly after he left school his notes to Claude Favre Vaugelas Remarques su la langue Francais 1647 his compilation of a dictionary of arts and sciences for the Academie Francaise 1694 and his editorship of Mercure galant with Donneau de Vise. <br/><br/>The artist of the two engravings fronting the books is the son of Hermann Weyen or Weyher Laurent Weyen 1643-1672 a Flemish engraver who died in Paris. 1863List1004New Hampshire: Printer Unknown 1863. First Edition. Printed broadside 16 ½ x 11 ½ inches archivally mounted and matted. A very good copy with some light toning small closed tear at upper margin light foxing at upper margin very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. Franklin Pierce remained politically active upon his return to New Hampshire following his presidency advocating for the Democratic cause and generally opposing the Civil War and Lincoln's policies. This scarce pro-Union anti-slavery broadside printed for the 1863 New Hampshire elections which happened March 12 takes aim at Pierce and his fellow Democrats repeating the unfounded claim first made in 1862 by William Seward that Pierce belonged to the secret Knights of the Golden Circle the secret society formed with the goal of forming a new territory out of the CSA Mexico Central America and the Caribbean. There was never evidence that Pierce had any involvement in the KGC though the society had members in southern parts of some Union states such as Indiana Ohio Illinois and Missouri.<br /> <br /> The broadside printed for the March 12 elections quotes heavily from Pierce as well as the other Democrat candidates and party officials who were either running for office in New Hampshire or involved in politics a group which included Ira Eastman John Goerge Josiah Minot Thomas Treadwell Daniel Marcy William Burns and George Stevens. The broadside includes an engraving of coiled snakes each with these politicians named and the caption "et id omne genus." Eastman the Democratic candidate for governor won the popular vote but lacked the constitutional majority necessary for election. Marcy was successful in his bid for the First District. "Men of New Hampshire!" the broadside asks: "Will you Vote the Ticket Made up by Such Men" with the final line imploring to "Please paste up in a Conspicuous Place." <br /> <br /> Overall an uncommon survival from the 1863 elections. A very good copy with some light toning small closed tear at upper magin light foxing at upper margin very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. An unusual broadside Civil War peace proposal.<br/> <br/>A little-known but highly eccentric character Evans first made a name for himself in 1818 when he walked from New Hampshire to Detroit in the middle of winter no less backtracked to Pittsburgh and continued his walk all the way to New Orleans publishing a narrative of his pedestrian journey the following year. After a failed Congressional run in New Hampshire and a failed attempt to become secretary of the Senate he ended up practicing law in Washington. In the midst of the Civil War Evans published a series of broadside letters all known in but few examples and likely printed in small quantities. In one in which excoriated the south for their role in the war he explained that he issued his missives as broadsides since his letters had no chance of publication in the already crowded pages of the newspaper press. The present broadside by Evans suggests a 20-point proposal for peace between the North and South including the abolition of slavery the federal assumption of Confederate debt universal amnesty restoration of all confiscated property the annexation of Mexico the expulsion of the Russians from the Pacific Northwest the seizing of the Hudson's Bay and Arctic fur trade from the British inviting Canada to become part of the United States the unification of Central America and the building of a trans-Darien canal the nationalization of the mining industry universal temperance fair pay charity from the rich and more. The broadside letter concludes: "Unhappy -- deeply unhappy am I in what I am now going to say -- tears of pity grief and shame for the whole country coursing down my cheeks: -- I solemnly declare that I have no doubt and never had that the longer the South holds out the nearer she will be so absolute annihilation ." An iconic poster protesting the arrest of the Chicago 8 on conspiracy charges relating to the protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The group originally as eight members consisted of Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin founders of the Youth International Party YIPPIES Tom Hayden a co-founder in Students for a Democratic Society Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale whose case would be declared a mistrial during the trial leading to his exclusion from the Chicago 7 David Dellinger and Rennie Davis members of the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam MOBE and John Froines and Lee Weiner. The address 28 E. Jackson was a building where Rennie Davis rented a space so it is possible that the MOBE printed this though we cannot confirm. unknown books

First edition Schuh's issue B no stated priority with the dedication to Charles de Neufville. "Very scarce. Compendium of all the author ever discovered or read about the subject of mineralogy. It was published posthumously from notes he left by his Order at Lyon six years after his death. Printed in a double column format in a relatively small type-size the work is a vast storehouse of all things mineralogical including new ideas restatements of earlier authors observations and superstitious belief. The uncritical selection of material led Webster in his Metallographia London 1671 p. 29 to criticize the author as too digressive and as mixing tares with the wheat. Partington thinks the use of the term 'Mineralogia' in the title is the first modern usage of the word. "The work opens by listing the evils and benefits of mineralogy. Mining is considered dangerous because of the lurking underground spirits.the author notes that the study of mineralogy helps one to understand the bible. It provides medicines and money ornaments for religious purposes tools used in agriculture industry painting music and alchemy. Cesi then answers the question he posed earlier and declares mineralogy to be a true philosophy worthy of careful study. "The numerous citations to earlier authors provide evidence of Cesi's wide reading. Commonly many authors are referenced on single points. For example in describing the generation of minerals he closely follows Aristotle but also cites Theophrastus Avicenna Albertus Magnus Agricola Gregorius Reisch Pliny Boodt Francis Rueus Marbode the Bible and numerous church fathers. The author is uncritical of the views he presents and accepts the authority of the ancient and medieval authors as his own. He believes that the Sun Moon and stars influence the subterranean world of minerals and metals and that gems have miraculous curative powers. He includes a chapter on the magnet. "Cesi divides his work into five sections: the first treats mineralogy proper the second the economic and commercial aspects for example colors and pigments the third lapidifying juices of the earth that congeal into minerals the fourth gems and the fifth metals. At the conclusion is a long and thankfully comprehensive index. Much insight about ancient philosophy and its affect in the 17th century can be gained from studying Cesi's Mineralogia."-Schuh Mineralogy & Crystallography: A Biobibliography 1469 to 1920 pp. 358-59. Having served in a Massachusetts regiment during the French and Indian Wars Carver was sent in 1766 by Robert Rogers then governor of Mackinac to map the main rivers of Wisconsin and Minnesota in preparation for an expedition to search for an overland Northwest Passage. He traveled the Fox-Wisconsin route then up the Mississipii and Minnesota rivers to a point west of the Falls of St. Anthony where he wintered with the Sioux Indians. In 1767 he joined the party sent by Rogers to find a route to the Pacific. They traveled as far as Grand Portage on Lake Superior when they were forced to turn back for lack of supplies. This account based on his journal includes vivid descriptions of the Wisconsin and Minnesota territories Indian life and customs and a short treatise on tobacco. It was tremendously popular in both America and Europe and is thought to be the first work to mention a large mountain range to the west presumably the Rocky Mountains. Two copper plates. Octavo. The period calf binding has been expertly rebacked with a new brown leather spine and modern endpapers. The contents are a trifle toned with some occasional mild soiling and smudging.
