GOLD SCALE In ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER'S WOODEN CASE Circa 1850. E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra. William Street 73. New York

42777New York: E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra n. d. Circa 1850. Wooden case with a hinged lid and hook clasps seller's label to inside of lid. Interior has carved compartments for the brass scale and weights including a small compartment for grain weights with a hinged lid. Light general wear to case and weights brass balances a bit tarnished. Only contains the three grain weights so perhaps others missing VG overall. Suspension gold scale made of brass with troy and grain weights. Troy weights nested ranging from 1/16 to 4 oz; grain weights include 2 6 and 10. Case: 1-11/16" x 6-11/16" x 3-1/8". Scale when hanging: ~8-1/4" x 7-1/8" brass balances 2-1/2" in diameter. In 1850 the New York firm of E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra importers of French fancy goods attempted to capitalize on the California Gold Rush by adding gold scales to their wares. Notices in several of the city's papers in late October and early November of that year including the Monday November 4th edition of The Evening Post advertised the following: "GOLD SCALES. The subscribers offer for sale the best and most approved pattern of French Standard Gold Scales adjusted exactly to the United States Mint Standard of every size and weight. These scales are so made that they take but very little compass when packed and are much more neatly and conveniently finished than either the English German or American article. As we have all that are made of this pattern parties having orders for shipment to California are solicited to examine them before purchasing elsewhere. Also for sale a variety of French fancy goods accordeons sic &c. E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra 73 William Street up stairs." E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra was located at 61 Maiden Lane until at least 1847 moving to their William Street address in 1848 or 1849. No later advertisements for these scales appear to have been issued in New York newspapers leading us to conjecture that the firm's venture into the gold mining market was perhaps not particularly successful. It is of course impossible to say with any certainty if this particular scale was originally used during the Gold Rush though this one here offered was purchased in California giving rise to possibility it may very well have been. 186538207Washington D.C. 1865. Letterpress broadside. 24 x 8 1/2 inches. Expert restoration on verso. An unusual broadside Civil War peace proposal. A little-known but highly eccentric character Evans first made a name for himself in 1818 when he walked from New Hampshire to Detroit in the middle of winter no less backtracked to Pittsburgh and continued his walk all the way to New Orleans publishing a narrative of his pedestrian journey the following year. After a failed Congressional run in New Hampshire and a failed attempt to become secretary of the Senate he ended up practicing law in Washington. In the midst of the Civil War Evans published a series of broadside letters all known in but few examples and likely printed in small quantities. In one in which excoriated the south for their role in the war he explained that he issued his missives as broadsides since his letters had no chance of publication in the already crowded pages of the newspaper press. The present broadside by Evans suggests a 20-point proposal for peace between the North and South including the abolition of slavery the federal assumption of Confederate debt universal amnesty restoration of all confiscated property the annexation of Mexico the expulsion of the Russians from the Pacific Northwest the seizing of the Hudson's Bay and Arctic fur trade from the British inviting Canada to become part of the United States the unification of Central America and the building of a trans-Darien canal the nationalization of the mining industry universal temperance fair pay charity from the rich and more. The broadside letter concludes: "Unhappy -- deeply unhappy am I in what I am now going to say -- tears of pity grief and shame for the whole country coursing down my cheeks: -- I solemnly declare that I have no doubt and never had that the longer the South holds out the nearer she will be so absolute annihilation ." Very Good/First printed edition editio princeps of the 11th century commentary on portions of the pentateuch by the Bulgarian poet and Talmudist Tobiah ben Eliezer. Published by the house of the seminal printer of Hebrew books Daniel Bomberg under the supervision of his scholar-in-residence extraordinaire Cornelio Adelkind. Venetian law at this time limited Hebrew publishing to Gentile printers. Bomberg a protestant from Antwerp entered this lucrative market and with Adelkind's help became its prime exponent until his death in 1549. . Folio 32 cm; 93 leaves. Text in Hebrew. Title within architectural border reproduced in Amram "Makers of Hebrew Books in Italy" p. 215 also in the Jewish Museum's 1989 exhibition catalogue "Gardens and Ghettos: the Art of Jewish Life in Italy" page 50. Some section headings within ornamental borders. Bound in c19 or c20 dark red crushed morocco ruled in gilt and decorated with arabesques on both boards; spine with raised bands and compartments tooled and titled in gilt; green polished leather doublures with red crushed morocco dentelles bordered in pointillé accented with arabesques; green moiré free endleaves. Edges gilt. Binding not signed. Joints and crown adroitly reinforced with Japanese paper; corners somewhat worn down. Occasional contemporary notes in manuscript in text; brief stain on leaf mem-tet and lightly along the bottom edge of leaves nun-bet and nun-gimmel. Text otherwise pristine. First edition of this beautifully illustrated book; the fine woodcuts are by Sukenobu Nishikawa 1671-1750 or -51 or -54 who "counts among the foremost masters of so-called ukiyo-e primitive prints. His subject matter like that of his contemporaries revolved around images of women walking. These images are stylised lending the rhythmic movement of the sumptuous robes an almost sculptural effect. Nishikawa also did many book illustrations.Nishikawa founded a whole school and according to his family archives Harunobu 1725-1770 was a follower of his."-Oxford Art Online. This work is concerned with the education of women in its widest sense combining knowledge with taste. Four types of girls' "play" are described and illustrated; each providing instruction in behavior and ethics. The fine woodcut frontispiece depicts a young woman reading a book surrounded symbols of knowledge and refinement: bookshelves and brushes for calligraphy. Her clothes and hairstyle are appropriate. The first volume is concerned with dolls hina. In Japan dolls are not for play but have high spiritual value which offer girls preparation for adulthood and marriage. For the Japanese dolls are living creatures possessing heart and soul from which girls can learn discipline obedience and control. Nakanishi 1634-1709 was a scholar and writer on Shintoism and the present text was edited and posthumously published by Yusuishi Tanaka who has contributed a preface. The theme of the text is instructional and written for girls and young women: there are many references to texts essential for proper behavior and ethics. Nakanishi draws on the Nihon Shoki the oldest chronicle of Japan; Man'yoshu the eighth-century anthology of Japanese poetry; the Tale of Genji; and Makura no Soshi the famous Pillow Book. There are four fine double-page woodcut illustrations in the first volume. The first illustration depicts an upper-class woman sending her dolls away in a boat thereby sending her suffering away. The second illustration depicts the hinamatsuri doll festival with dolls arranged on shelves. The following illustration depicts a young woman facing her suitor her dowry behind her all are objects of knowledge and culture: a calligraphy set fine papers in a box picture scrolls books etc. The final illustration in this volume depicts an offering made to the sky referencing tanabata the star festival. According to legend the Milky Way separates two lovers; they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. The second volume is concerned with kai-awase the Japanese shell-matching game. Again there are four fine double-page illustrations each filled with deep meaning. Matching the shells symbolizes the unity of partners in a marriage. There are many references to the Tale of Genji and Lady Murasaki; scenes from this novel were often used to illustrate the shells. One of the illustrations depicts the traditional card game called uta-garuta being played by several women. A very good set and rare. Some carefully repaired worming mostly confined to the margins. Rare French edition of one of the most famous books of the period Exquemelin's account of the adventures life morals and customs of the pirates roaming the seas together with a full description of the Caribbean where they mainly operated. The French edition was just like the Dutch edition directly based on the original manuscript and was adapted by Thomas de Frontigniers. Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin called Oexmelin by the French was a chemist of French Protestant origin who spent several years with the pirates as a ship's surgeon. He took part in their daring exploits like the expeditions of the notorious English buccaneer Henry Morgan called John in the book including his raid on Maracaibo in 1669 or a year later his attack on Panama. The first edition of Exquemelin's eye witness account was published in Dutch in Amsterdam by Jan ten Hoorn in 1678 an edition so rare that it long escaped bibliographers. Exquemelin who once before in 1672 had shortly been in Amsterdam returned there in 1677 to take the 'chirurgijn' exams he sorely needed to exercise this profession at Jamaica where he had settled and in 1679 he made his last 'proof'. Meanwhile he also offered his manuscript to the publisher's Ten Hoorn who printed it in 1678. The book became immediately so polular that editions were published everywhere. The Spanish edition of 1681 probably also published in Amsterdam was long taken for the first. The first French edition was published two years before the present but both editions are equally extremely rare. In 1684 Exquemelin had sailed for France and the captain of the ship impressed with his stories saw to it that Exquemelin's manuscript was made ready for publication. The French edition altough seemingly much the same as the first Dutch edition from which most translations were made proves by closer comparison to be considerably enlarged. Several extra chapters are added mostly treating the natural history of the Spanish Americas and the romantic figure of Monbars is found here for the first time. For both the Dutch and French editions Exquemelin's manuscript had been adapted but according to De la Fontaine Verwey has kept the French edition the closest to the original. The illustrations for the French edition were newly made as well and where the Dutch edition mainly shows the portraits and atrocious acts of the pirates the plates of the French edition pay more attention to the geographical and natural historical aspects including for the fist time the plate with a buccaneer in hunting costume. Another plate shows the catching of turtles at night and the illustration in the text shows a sea-cow of which Exquemelin made a special study. The maps were also newly designed with the help of AbbBaudrand who wanted to remain anonymous; they include a map of the Isthmus of Panama drawn by Exquemelin himself. The book therefore is an important 'Americanum' as well. Of special interest are the two "Appendices" with an account of the possessions revenues and offices of the Spaniards in America including a complete list of all ecclesiastical functionaries in Spanish America together with their salaries. No book in any language was ever the parent of so many imitations and the source of so many legends and it still is popular today. The Society of Writers to Her Majestys Signet is the oldest legal society in the world. It is a private society of Scottish solicitors. The Society dates back to 1594 and is part of the College of Justice. Writers to the Signet originally had special privileges in relation to the drawing up of documents which required to be signeted but these have disappeared and the Society is now an independent non-regulatory association of solicitors most of whom are based in Edinburgh.
