Uniformly bound in the original publisher's decorative stiff wrappers. In new condition. ~ First edition. The Paul C. Blum (1898-1981) Collection at the Yokohama Archives of History Library contains some 7,000 items, including foreign books and magazines about Japan dating back to the 16th century, old European maps of Japan and Asia, and Japanese woodblock prints. The Yokohama Archives of History contain over 250,000 Yokohama-related materials from the Edo period to the Taisho-early Showa era. Initially planned to comprise 3 volumes only, the catalogue eventually was published in 4 volumes and is including a Supplement and an Index.

Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's full embossed cloth, upper cover with large, attractive gilt illustration within blind-embossed and relief frames, spine richly illustrated in gilt, and with gilt lettering, spine discoloured, some wear to spine ends. A very good copy in fine internal condition, crisp plates. ~ First edition. The beautifully illustrated travelogue of Anton Baeckström describes the expedition to the Far East (1867-1870) in which he participated in the service of the French Navy. He recalls the expedition's visits to places as Bourbon, New Caledonia, Manilla, Cochinchina, Japan, China, Singapore; and devotes large part of the book to Japan, including visits to Nagasaki, Yokohama, Edo, Kamakura, Kobe, Osaka. With views of Manila, Saigon, Bangkok, Deshima, Hongkong, and Singapore. Cordier BJ 628.

Original plain wrappers with olive-green floral patterned dust-jackets, volume I printed in purple; in one volume one gathering is loose, apparently due to error in binding; entry from previous auction catalogue pasted onto top of half-title. In fine condition. Excellent set, very well preserved, practically all plates in mint condition. ~ First edition. Copy number 774 of 1000.

Hardcover, recently bound in pristine full calf antique style, spine with large raised bands between compartments, crimson morocco lettering-piece in gilt in second compartment, blind decoration to each of the remainders, sides ruled in blind; small hole at inner blank margin of title-page neatly repaired. In fine condition. Imposing, most attractive tome. ~ Photomechanical reproduction of the 1727 edition. Printed in a limited edition of 150 copies, this is copy no. 26. Kaempfer (1651-1716), a surgeon with the Dutch East India Company, arrived in Japan in 1690 at Nagasaki and stayed there for almost 4 years. His account of that stay, first published in Britain in 1727, has long been recognized as the most authoritative guide to virtually all aspects of Japan and the Japanese at that time. Individual volumes are already scarce as first editions; a complete set is extremely difficult to find, especially in this condition.

Gernshiem describes a copy with 12 albumen prints and gives a date of 1875. In our copy page 64 notes that "While these sheets are passing through the press, an event of unusual interest has taken place in Nottingham. On Thursday, September 27th, 1877, the Foundation Stone of the new University College was laid." Inscribed on front free-endpaper "Mary Thorpe, with her brothers love and best wishes, January 20th 1882." Gernshiem, 601.

Infine si trovano le tavole di ragguaglio del ''miglio di Piemonte'' con le altre unità di misura italiane ed estere. Buon esemplare, fresco e ad ampi margini.. Non in Manno-Promis.

King's work, first published in 1879, immediately established itself as the standard popular reference on the ancient New Forest town; local interest generated the inevitable additions and corrections, but the planned second edition, incorporating the numerous addenda, was deferred by the author's death. This best edition, compiled and published by the author's son from his father's meticulous notes, benefits from much new material and many fresh illustrations. This copy was formerly in the library of Professor [Sir] J H Biles, the eminent naval architect [of 'Titanic' Enquiry fame], and bears his elegant blind-embossed art nouveau bookplate (with press-mark in manuscript) on front paste-down. John Harvard Biles (1854-1933) was apprenticed at Portsmouth Dockyard, studied at the Royal School of Naval Architecture and joined the Admiralty in 1877. His talents were quickly recognised and in 1880 (at the age of only 26) he was appointed chief designer to the major shipbuilder J&G Thomson on Clydebank where he created the revolutionary designs for the 'City of Paris' and 'City of New York'. In 1883 he left to join the foundling consultancy established by Sir Edward Reed, where he quickly became a driving force (the consultancy continues to the present day as Sir J H Biles & Co.). In 1891 he was awarded the Chair of Naval Architecture at Glasgow University (then perhaps the most prestigious such appointment in the world) where he devoted himself to teaching and consultancy on a world-wide scale. IN VIEW OF HIS EMINENCE IN THE FIELD OF SHIP DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, PROFESSOR BILES WAS AN ASSESSOR IN THE ENQUIRY INTO THE LOSS OF RMS 'TITANIC' AND SUBSEQUENTLY HE SERVED ON THE BOARD OF TRADE ENQUIRY INTO LIFEBOATS AND LIFE-SAVING APPLIANCES WHICH AROSE AS A RESULT OF THE TITANIC LOSS.
