First edition, folio (380 x 270 mm), x, 210, [2], xxxvipp., title in red and black, 8 mounted albumen prints (145 x 200 mm) by John Cruttenden of Maidstone, images faded at edges, lithographic plan hand-coloured outline, double-page pedigree and double-page facsimile letter, fore-edge of frontispiece and title page neatly strengthened, neat repair to inner margin of leaf G3 marbled endpapers, attractively rebound in the style of a late eighteen-century panelled calf binding, gilt, with red and black morocco labels to spine. Leeds Castle was the country seat of Charles Wykeham Martin (1801-1870), an English Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons in three periods between 1841 and 1870. Cruttenden had exhibited two of his images of Leeds Castle at the Photographic Society's 1861 Exhibition. Gernsheim, 458.

In tondo diametro di 9 cm; la stampa è montata su un cartoncino a sua volta inserito in una cornice in legno dipinta di nero, contornato all'interno da una cornice in ottone con una fine cornice incisa. Finissima acquarellatura a mano. Magnifica e fine incisione che illustra la città, cittadella e territorio circostante, d'Alessandria come appariva nel 1825. La carta, rarissima, venne realizzata da Paolo Burzio, noto ingegnere, architetto e topografo della città di Chieri e misuratore e disegnatore del 1° della città di Chieri e misuratore di 1° classe dello Stato Maggiore Generale dell'esercito sabaudo. Paolo Burzio, nel 1857, partecipò alla realizzazione del piano regolatore della città di Chieri. Esemplare in ottime condizioni di conservazione di carta rara.

Royal octavo. Pp. xx, 689, (2) publisher's catalogue. Plus double-page map and 2 plates. With 19 woodcut illustrations throughout the text; woodcut tail-piece. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's full pictorial cloth by Hunter of Edinburgh, both sides as well as spine are illustrated and richly highlighted in gilt, original floral endpapers; spine-ends very slightly bumped with minor wear to corner-tips. In about fine condition. A lovely copy preserved entirely in the original state. ~ First edition. The Rev. Dixon resided in Japan for four years, occupying during that time the Professor of the English Language and Literature's chair in the Imperial College of Engineering, Tokyo. He returned to Scotland in 1880 in order to study for the ministry, and wrote his impressions of Japan in "The Land of the Morning" in which he gives an interesting account of Japan and the Japanese. On March 4, 1882, shortly after the publication of the book, the reviewer of "The Spectator" wrote: "The judgments that the author passes on men and things, on national habits and customs, have all the appearance of reasonableness and impartiality. They lean to the favourable side, nor is this strange, considering the kindness and courtesy which the author almost uniformly met with, even in his remotest journeys. But there is nothing of blind partiality."
