THIS COPY WAS FORMERLY IN THE LIBRARY OF THE ORIGINAL SUBSCRIBER SAMUEL ASH OF PORTLAND ROAD, SOUTH NORWOOD, AND BEARS HIS SIGNATURE ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. John Corbet Anderson was perhaps the greatest, and certainly the most prolific, authority on the history of the town. This work is the first of four linked volumes, published privately by subscription, covering aspects of the town's past, but each volume is complete in itself.Subscriber's copies of any of Anderson's works are notably uncommon.

This was the greatest property deal of all time and led to the the imposition of the well-known current grid system on the unmapped land.
