Hardcover, uniformly bound in contemporary half blonde calf extra, marbled boards, blind ruled sides, spine with raised bands decoratively tooled in gilt, blind embossed compartments, 2 dark-green gilt lettering-pieces in remaining compartments, "London 1807" gilt-stamped at foot of each spine, bit discoloured, extremities bit rubbed, chafed, ownership signature, first free endpaper of one volume creased. Attractive wide-margined copy in a very good condition, very clean interior. ~ First edition. Important work for its account of Macartney's embassy to China. Lust, 501; Cordier BS, 2391. ~ Provenance: from the private library of Stafford H. Northcote, with his attractive engraved armorial bookplate "Christi crux est mea lux" ("The cross of Christ is my light") to each volume. Sir Stafford Henry Northcote (1818-1887), 1st Earl of Iddesleigh, was Secretary of State for India (1867), Chancellor of the Exchequer (1874-1880), and British Foreign Secretary (1886). His(?) bookmark, silken red, hand embroidered with the word "Faith", is loosely inserted in volume II. ~ TO THIS IS ADDED: Loosely inserted in this copy are 2 engraved prints, apparently collected by Northcote. These are as follows: I. "View of the City of Batavia, with a Distant View of the Mountain Overhanging the Valley of the Upas, or Poison Tree. (From Authenticated Documents.)" Oblong, 200 x 260mm. Sconvolgimenti climatici, erosione delle risorse, mutamenti del quadro geopolitico, accelerazioni delle dinamiche socio-economiche e consistenza dei flussi migratori obbligano oggi a riscrivere i trattati di geografia generale. Fabrizio Bartaletti rimette mano al suo fortunato manuale del 2006 per accogliere e sistematizzare i risultati più recenti negli ambiti della disciplina maggiormente interessati dai cambiamenti in atto. Oltre ad arricchire la sintesi di storia del pensiero geografico con fonti primarie finora non tradotte in italiano, il libro fornisce le nozioni basilari di morfologia, idrografia e cartografia, e compie un esauriente giro d'orizzonte dell'intera geografia fisica e antropica, dalla geografia degli insediamenti a quella culturale, economica, politica. Un'attenzione specifica è riservata al rischio ambientale e al clima, con aggiornatissimi dati comparativi sull'andamento della temperatura mondiale negli ultimi 170 anni.

Published as Bibliotheca Topographica Britannica, Vol. IX. No. 1. THIS COPY IS COMPLETE IN EVERY DETAIL AS CALLED FOR BY UPCOTT. The text includes advertisement, additions and corrections. There are two contemporary binding discrepancies: Plate VI is placed at p.41 (not p.49); the large folding chronological chart is placed at p.25 (not p.35). Idea di nuovo sistema costruttivo in zona sismica

br. Il sistema costruttivo in zona sismica proposto si basa essenzialmente sulla considerazione che, interrompendo la solidarietà tra la costruzione e il complesso costituito dalla fondazione e dal terreno, si possa consentire, durante l'evento sismico, a quest'ultimo di traslare rigidamente rispetto alla costruzione, che rimane teoricamente immobile, ma in pratica pressoché ferma ed indeformata, sotto l'azione prevalente della forza peso. Oltre alla possibilità di un maggiore sviluppo in altezza della costruzione, il sistema presenta due altri rilevanti vantaggi: 1. consistente attenuazione del malessere psico-fisico indotto negli utenti della costruzione dall'evento sismico, per effetto della traslazione rigida del complesso fondazione-terreno rispetto alla costruzione; 2. facilità d'intervento di manutenzione sia degli appoggi mobili multidirezionali che dei collegamenti laterali. Anche se le risultanze teoriche e sperimentali sono ampiamente soddisfacenti nei limiti imposti dalle particolari condizioni in cui lo studio è stato eseguito, il sistema proposto continuerà ad essere una "idea", fintantoché studi più accurati, confortati da prove sperimentali via via più perfezionate, non ne avranno dimostrata inequivocabilmente la validità applicativa.
