Folding engraved map printed on fine ivory linen, size: 21 x 28 ins (approx. 53.0 x 71.0 cms) folding in 36 panels to 6 x 3 ins (approx. 15.o x 7.5 cms), printed surface very lightly browned (rather more heavily so along central fold), a few locations marked with red ink ; original green cloth slip-case framed in blind and lettered in black 'Flexible Map of London' with deckled thumb-hole, a very good, bright copy. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's full embossed cloth, upper cover with large, attractive gilt illustration within blind-embossed and relief frames, spine richly illustrated in gilt, and with gilt lettering, spine discoloured, some wear to spine ends. A very good copy in fine internal condition, crisp plates. ~ First edition. The beautifully illustrated travelogue of Anton Baeckström describes the expedition to the Far East (1867-1870) in which he participated in the service of the French Navy. He recalls the expedition's visits to places as Bourbon, New Caledonia, Manilla, Cochinchina, Japan, China, Singapore; and devotes large part of the book to Japan, including visits to Nagasaki, Yokohama, Edo, Kamakura, Kobe, Osaka. With views of Manila, Saigon, Bangkok, Deshima, Hongkong, and Singapore. Cordier BJ 628.

Due volumi in 4° legati in mezza pelle con unghie, titoli al dorso incisi in oro, sguardie marmorizzate, bianche, occhiello, frontespizio, dedicatoria, 468 pp. al primo volume, LXXVI tavole al secondo. Splendida opera dell' ing. Baggi trattante i problemi e le soluzioni alla costruzione di grandi opere viarie, galleristiche, di canalizzazione, etc. Con prosa piana e chiara supportata da calcoli seguiti passo per passo, l' autore si muove a suo agio in complessi problemi topografici accompagnando il lettore in una non facile materia. Ammirevole il secondo volume formato da grandi tavole a doppia pagina, alcune al tratto altre in più colori, necessario complemento al testo del primo volume. Opera non comune ed in ottimo stato tranne per i dorsi parzialmente staccati. Molto importante per gli argomenti trattati e rara a trovarsi completa delle tavole.

2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, wanting all advertised maps and plans as usual, some moderate age-browning (but nowhere affecting legibility); crudely bound in tan leather [sheep?], backs with red leather labels ruled and lettered in gilt, a good, sound working copy of a scarce work. The Directory was compiled by W. Parson. The index to the work as a whole in included in the second volume. With the contemporary binder's tickets of E.Orthick of Leeds (first volume) and J. Nicholson of Bradford (second volume) on front paste-downs; both tickets must surely have been carried forward from the original bindings. The maps and plans advertised by the publisher were actually issued as a separate volume and are seldom, if ever, present. Nevertheless, a very substantial body of information and an invaluable county reference. COMPLETE SETS ARE SCARCE. Anderson p.310; Boyne XV.
