First edition of a complete set of "Little Bessie's Country Stories" by Thomas Miller published by Sheldon & Company. They were issued in September 1868 despite the 1869 imprint alongside six other titles similarly bound in highly attractive violet colored publisher's cloth "Little Rosy's Travels". The six volumes in this complete set of "Little Bessie's Country Stories" include: "Sheep and the Lamb"; "Young Donkey and the Little Gooseherd"; "Little Rabbit-Keepers"; "Cock of the Walk"; "Cows in the Water"; and "Young Angler". Interestingly this set has contemporary ink inscriptions that read "Lizzie Xmas 1865"-- which calls the date of publication into question. Each of the six volume is: single vol. 4.5" by 3.25" approx. 62 pp. in-text illus. in original violet publisher's cloth stamped in blind on boards and gold on spines. A couple Victorian scraps on flyleaves contemporary ink inscription from early owner. Sheldon & Company unknown

Marbled endpapers armorial bookplate H. D. Colvill-Scott to FEP later photographic illustration depicting the author pasted to verso of half-title. The rare first book of verse by eminent mason and geologist Hugh Miller 1802-1856 which secured the notice of amongst others Leigh Hunt. The book was printed and published anonymously in Inverness by the owner of the Inverness Courant and includes the six stanza 'Greece - an Ode Written short after the surrender of the Acropolis'. 1807mon0000054101Rivington 1807-01-01. Hardcover. Acceptable. in x in x in. 1759 seventh edition on very worn leather outer bound boards which are beginning to disintegrate. The front cover is detached but this volume is screaming out for a rebinding job given that inner content is in good condition given it's age. The first few pages and back pages are very frayed at the edges but the bulk of the book is in remarkably good condition. This seventh edition was revised and altered according to the system of botany and embellised with several copper plates which were not in the orgional editions. Some browning evident to edges otherwise a remarkable and collectable folio well preserved for it's age in spite of the serious deterioration of the outer boards. Price has been significantly marked down because of these detailed faults but it is still strongly advised to ask for a comprehensive set of images before ordering. Rivington hardcover

Founded in 1878 these four early course offerings date from 1883 to 1889. Although only a baby step the courses offered and the idea behind the movement was in part to open up education to women especially rural women in America. Author Sternberg is well known to medical and microscopy collectors both for his work as a bacteriologist and microscopist.<br /> <br /> "Brigadier General George Miller Sternberg June 8 1838 – November 3 1915 was a U.S. Army physician who is considered the first American bacteriologist having written Manual of Bacteriology 1892. After he survived typhoid and yellow fever Sternberg documented the cause of malaria 1881 discovered the cause of lobar pneumonia 1881 and confirmed the roles of the bacilli of tuberculosis and typhoid fever 1886. As the 18th U.S. Army Surgeon General from 1893 to 1902 Sternberg led commissions to control typhoid and yellow fever along with his subordinate Major Walter Reed. Sternberg also oversaw the establishment of the Army Medical School 1893; now the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps 1901. On the second free end paper is the drawing of a kicking mule and "My Book Frederick Remington" signature - this is a well-known forgery by Eugene Field II. 18623449Fort Kearny Ne: October 28 1862. Very good plus. 4pp. on a single folded sheet of lined paper. Light wear and toning old folds. An interesting manuscript letter written by Dr. George Lorin Miller 1839-1920 a leading Nebraska pioneer and instrumental figure in establishing Fort Kearny. Miller also served as the fort's sutler during the Civil War and helped to recruit the First Nebraska Regiment. Miller was a physician politician editor and land owner who arrived in Omaha in 1854 the year the city was founded. Miller himself founded the Omaha Herald which later became the Omaha World-Herald and was. staunch Democrat who became adept at harnessing the power of the press.<br /> <br /> Here Miller writes to an unnamed general in Helena Arkansas who was most likely Samuel Ryan Curtis. Miller's letter is well-written providing insights into and details of the politics war news and other information of the period. He is friendly to his correspondent noting that the two men had been political opponents in the past but Miller states that he supported the candidacy of his correspondent as "Colonel of our Regiment because I believed you capable and patriotic." Miller praises him for being recognized by no less than the President for "gallant services authenticated as they were by the best officers of the service" and then bemoans the fact that the correspondent was denied an appointment by the Senate due to the "mendacious meanness" of a Nebraska politician named Samuel G. Daily who apparently worked against his confirmation. Then Miller notes that Daily had to answer for his denial of the correspondent's appointment on the recent campaign trail where Daily "had to meet your case in the canvass at every turn -- apologized lied and smoothed it over as he best could. Denying everything and admitting nothing saved him by about 100 votes." He continues to encourage his correspondent with supportive language and then closes with a short appraisal of their shared hometown in the Nebraska Territory: "Omaha is changing much but it will not outrun your recollection of it. When you return you will see as I see that it is a real home after all however changed its appearance. October 28 unknown
