Autograph Letter Signed from Nebraska Territory Pioneer George L. Miller to Nebraska General Samuel Ryan Curtis Reporting on Some Dirty Politics and Including a Brief Appraisal of the Frontier Town of Omaha

18623449Fort Kearny Ne: October 28 1862. Very good plus. 4pp. on a single folded sheet of lined paper. Light wear and toning old folds. An interesting manuscript letter written by Dr. George Lorin Miller 1839-1920 a leading Nebraska pioneer and instrumental figure in establishing Fort Kearny. Miller also served as the fort's sutler during the Civil War and helped to recruit the First Nebraska Regiment. Miller was a physician politician editor and land owner who arrived in Omaha in 1854 the year the city was founded. Miller himself founded the Omaha Herald which later became the Omaha World-Herald and was. staunch Democrat who became adept at harnessing the power of the press. Here Miller writes to an unnamed general in Helena Arkansas who was most likely Samuel Ryan Curtis. Miller's letter is well-written providing insights into and details of the politics war news and other information of the period. He is friendly to his correspondent noting that the two men had been political opponents in the past but Miller states that he supported the candidacy of his correspondent as "Colonel of our Regiment because I believed you capable and patriotic." Miller praises him for being recognized by no less than the President for "gallant services authenticated as they were by the best officers of the service" and then bemoans the fact that the correspondent was denied an appointment by the Senate due to the "mendacious meanness" of a Nebraska politician named Samuel G. Daily who apparently worked against his confirmation. Then Miller notes that Daily had to answer for his denial of the correspondent's appointment on the recent campaign trail where Daily "had to meet your case in the canvass at every turn -- apologized lied and smoothed it over as he best could. Denying everything and admitting nothing saved him by about 100 votes." He continues to encourage his correspondent with supportive language and then closes with a short appraisal of their shared hometown in the Nebraska Territory: "Omaha is changing much but it will not outrun your recollection of it. When you return you will see as I see that it is a real home after all however changed its appearance. October 28 unknown

Wrappers expertly mended along the spine closed vertical tear at top edge of front wrapper expertly repaired wrappers lightly soiled and foxed. Clean internally. Very good. An interesting early and photographically- illustrated California wine promotional for the Linda Vista Vineyards in Mission San Jose. The work opens with an essay on the area by the "Poet of the Sierras" Joaquin Miller and then proceeds with photographs and descriptions of the vineyard from the fields to the interiors of the winery the fermenting house and distillery. This is followed by descriptions of the varieties of grapes produced at Linda Vista namely cabernet sauvignon cabernet franc petit verdot malbeck beclan petite sirrah mataro zinfandel mondeuse riesling sauvignon blanc semillon muscatel de bordelaise palomino blanco folle blanche trousseau muscatel de frontignan and burger. A section on the "Wines of Linda Vista" highlights the vineyard's production of cabernet medoc Linda Vista zinfandel claret burgundy chablis moselle johannisberger riesling hock sauterne sherry port muscatelle tokay angelica and brandy. The photographs also feature an elevated view of Mission San Jose the cellar entrance the "working staff of Linda Vista" a storeroom with dozens of wine barrels fair exhibits and "the bottling department." The work ends with a notice that the Linda Vista Vineyard has won blue ribbons for both red and white wines at the recent Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The publication information is taken from a label pasted over the original imprint information on the titlepage indicating L.B. McIver as the publisher. Though published in New York this promotional was actually printed by the H.S. Crocker Company in San Francisco. A rare California wine promotional. Small tears along fold not affecting text traces of former mounting light soiling along folds but very good. Docketed by recipient. From Scottish paleontologist and geologist Hugh Miller author of works of popular science including The Old Red Sandstone 1841 Footprints of the Creator 1850 and The Testimony of the Rocks 1856 to fellow paleontologist Edward Charlesworth editor of the Magazine of Natural History. "I am glad to see you have added a . shell column to your columns of British Fossils. Please set me down as a subscriber for a Â£2 . . set; as also for a Â£2 . . set of the fossils of the Mountain Limestone . . . I am at present engaged with printers and woodengravers in getting up a fourth edition of my little work the "Footprints" which will contain prints of a few curious unique organisms picked up since I had the pleasure of seeing you in Autumn last . . ." Although he had little formal scientific training Miller made important contributions to paleontology including the discovery of several previously unknown species of fossil fish. A deeply religious man Miller believed that "the fossil record confirmed in broad outline the cosmic drama depicted symbolically in the Bible" Dictionary of Scientific Biography. His geological studies had convinced him of the Earth's great age but he held that the fossil record represented separate creations rather than the transmutation of species over time. His Footprints of the Creator was intended as a rebuttal of the evolutionary theory put forth in Robert Chambers's Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation 1844. The fourth edition of Footprints mentioned in Miller's letter came out in 1853. Miller's letter is on the letterhead of The Witness a Scottish evangelical newspaper of which he was the editor. . unknown books

187258347RARE TYPE CATALOGUE FROM 1870stall 8vo. 2 title leaf 6 price listpp. plus 84 leaves of type specimens printed on one side only plus 26 leaves of ornaments etc. printed on both sides original turquoise plain wrappers no wrapper spine very light and unobtrusive damp tide mark on many leaves throughout terminal leaves and price list leaves dusty and some other localised dustiness first few leaves little foxed but basically a very good and completely serviceable copy. Rare.Can be dated quite accurately from the printed advertisements on the inside of the front wrapper. These are for books published by William M. Nimmo of Edinburgh and include Royal Illuminated Legends published by Nimmo but printed in colours in Belfast by Marcus Ward. The British Library date their copy as 1872 presumaby on the basis of their acquisition of it and Oxford date their copy as circa 1875. Also advertised is 'Royal Illuminatated Nursery Rhymes' similarly Edinburgh published by Belfast colour-printed by Marcus Ward in two series both dated to 1872 by Oxford National Library of Scotland and B.L. The Edinburgh based type foundry of Miller and Richard designed and manufactured metal type from 1809 to 1952. "One of the most notable sets of designs of the foundry was a 'modernised old face' known as Old Style - an adaptation of the old-style serif fonts of the 1500-1800 period such as Caslon but regularised to match the greater evenness and grace expected in fonts by the mid-nineteenth century . Talbot Baines Reed wrote in 1887 in his History of the Old English Letter Foundries that the foundry had also won a reputation for extremely small-size type . The firm's work entered a decline with the arrival in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century of hot metal typesetting by which type was not sold to printers but cast by machine new for each job under the control of a keyboard. Some of its old style and modern typefaces were imitated by Monotype one of the major hot metal companies. It was wound up in 1952. According to James Mosley 'matrices for a few types were acquired by Stephenson Blake & Co. Ltd. Sheffield but most of the materials appear to have been dispersed'" wikipedia.
