Slightest of rubbing to extremities. Internally clean and crisp. Recent bookplate of Eric Gerald Stanley to verso of front blank fly-leaf. Subscriber's copy ink ownership inscription to FEP: 'Mrs. Brown Westhead / Lea Castle'. A crisp copy of the sole edition of a collection of devotional verse seemingly the only published work of curate of Kidderminster Thomas Cook of whom little is known. This copy belonged to John Brown resident of Lea Castle in the village of Wolverley near Kidderminster. On his death the estate passed to his daughter and then by marriage into the Westhead family. From the recently dispersed library of Eric Gerald Stanley 1923-2018 scholar of Old English literature Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford. Light wear to covers minor toning and soiling to contents a few small edge tears. A scarce community cook book issued by the newly-incorporated YWCA of Lincoln Nebraska. It includes a full range of fare from coffee and puddings to fish and oysters soups jellies pickles and more. The contributor is indicated with each recipe and the work includes a directory for local businesses. Additional sections for Household Hints Dishes for the Sick and Quantities Required for Suppers are also included. OCLC locates four copies at Cornell Kansas State the University of Oregon and SMU. An entirely unsophisticated copy of an early American binding and a scarce Wilmington imprint presumed Delaware as the state is not listed. The book was published under several imprints in several years both before and after this publication presumably with at least some text changes. First edition 8vo pp. 8 444; stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait large engraved tailpiece on p. 8 woodcut tailpiece at the end; original blue paper-covered boards cream paper shelfback printed paper label on spine; overall soiling label darkened; all else very good sound and internally clean. From the Britannica: "Macklin first appeared as an actor at Bristol and in 1725 went to Lincoln's Inn Fields London. A man of violent nature he was a pioneer against the stilted declamation of his day. He went to Drury Lane Theatre in 1733 and later was concerned in its management. In 1735 he killed another actor in the greenroom over a dispute about a wig but although prosecuted he received no sentence. He set the seal on his stage career at Drury Lane on Feb. 14 1741 when he played Shylock rescuing the part from the broad comedy with which it had long been surrounded. Macklin played many parts with distinction but was constantly involved in disputes and lawsuits. He attempted to be a restaurateur but failed and returned to the stage. Two of his plays were outstanding Love à la mode 1759 and The Man of the World 1781. At the time of his death he claimed to be 107 years old; he may have been a centenarian but this is subject to dispute.
