James Cook 1728-1779 started life as a deck hand in a coal boat he rose to positions of high command in the British navy and made some of the greatest discoveries of the 18th century. In 1776 Cook was ordered to search for a western entrance to the fabled Northwest Passage across America. This trek brought him to Hawaii the Oregon coast and far north past the Bering Strait. The ships left the American coast on Oct. 26 1778 without having found a Northwest Passage. After he was killed in a dispute with natives upon returning to Hawaii Cook's crew made another unsuccessful attempt to explore the arctic. Cook wrote these first two volumes on the voyage before his untimely death. A later third volume was written by Captain James King. More commonly published was a 3 volume collection containing an additional folio-size book of maps and plates. American printings of Cook's voyages have always been scarce; the first American publication of Cook's 3rd voyage was a 1783 Philadelphia reprint of Rickman published by R. Bell which was described as "a miserable edition" in the Gentleman's Magazine. Another edition appeared in New York in 1796 published by Tiebout and O'Brien for Benjamin Gomez. Plates engraved after the English edition by G. Shallus of 90 South Third St. Philadelphia. Despite the title page calling for 40 engravings the work is complete with a total of 38 plates. A neat copy of this popular abridged account of Cook's voyages attributed to Jean Pierre Bérenger an exiled Swiss polymath the 1806 Paris edition the first to be attributed to him. Bérenger published a collection of abridgements of numerous voyages including those of Magellan Shelvocke Byron and Cook in 1788 the text of which was used for many subsequent editions designed for children such as this; uncommon with the BnF showing only one copy. "Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilisation and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of Antarctic land in the southern ice ring a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century. Cook was a brilliant navigator and hydrographer an excellent administrator and planner and probably the first sea captain to realise the importance of preserving the health and well-being of his crew. He did everything possible to maintain their physical fitness and the cleanliness of both men and ships. He conquered the hitherto prevalent scurvy by cutting down the consumption of salt meat and by always having fresh vegetables and fruit on board" Printing and the Mind of Man. 2 vols bound as 1 duodecimo 136 x 70 mm. The plate shows various animals-turned-meats with vivisection lines for carving. OCLC shows editions of the work as early as the 1830s though most are located in just a single copy or two. 18388685<p>First edition of the second collection by this south London working class poet. 'The sentiments expressed in Cook's poetry and prose reflect her efforts to break free from the societal limitations imposed on her class and gender. A woman who prided herself on her tiny hands and feet Cook dressed in unconventionally masculine attire and wore her hair short. J. Leach notes that Cook's dress 'proclaimed a determination to be herself' and relates how an 1851 story in the New York Times describes her as 'Tilting back in her chair planting both feet on the fender' and 'bluffly ordering a glass of beer' Leach 157. Cook was also most probably a lesbian. She never married and from 1845 to 1849 she was closely linked with the American actress Charlotte Cushman 1816–1876 to whom she wrote passionate poetic tributes 'To Charlotte Cushman'' Solveig C. Robinson in Oxford DNB.</p><p>The frontispiece depicting 'The Old Water Mill' bears Baxter imprint and states 'printed in oil colours' while the title-page vignette depicting an English ship at sea is similarly printed. These examples date from the first decade of George Baxter's patent for his colour prints in which an intaglio plate usually aquatint was printed first and then colours added with up multiple woodblocks. In both prints the darker colours have a characteristic depth and sheen. Melaia was reprinted in 1840 but the first edition with Baxter prints is exceptionally scarce.</p><p>Worldcat lists a single copy UC Davis Kohler collection JISC lists UK copies at BL Birmingham and Cambridge.</p><p>8vo 105 × 160 mm pp. viii 202 including Baxter-printed title plus similarly printed frontispiece both leaves slightly browned. Publisher's blindstamped blue-green cloth gilt edges yellow endpapers with binder's ticket Rowley. Slightly rubbed and soiled joints expertly repaired. Early pencil gift inscription. Book is tight square and unmarked but for name of former owner who received the book as gift on 12/25/1886-gift card is laid in. The book is written in the transliterated English letters of the Dakota language. Book Condition: VG maybe Near Fine; from what can be seen under the hand-made Indian book cover. No DJ. Black boards and spine with gilt lettering on spine and embossed cross on the front board. The book has a hand-made bead dyed porcupine quill and animal hide book cover that slips over the boards; has stitched leather closure on the front and Millie written on the spine. This is very likely turn of the century genuine Indian work. There is no foxing; the hinges are not split; the boards are not worn; there is no marking on the pages; there is no moisture damage. This book contains in the Dakota language the following subjects; The Christian Year; The Communion of Saints; the Church; The Sacraments; Offices of the Church; Missions and Charities; Special Seasons; Redemption; The Christian Life; The Judgment; Heaven and Miscellaneous. Scattered manuscript notes throughout plus manuscript additions to rear blanks. Even toning and scattered staining other signs of use. Extremely scarce late 19th-century community cook book published in Ventura California in 1897. Several hundred recipes are attributed to members of the local Ladies' Aid Society and advertisements for local businesses are scattered throughout. One chapter prints a handful of "Spanish Recipes" which include Havana Soup Pastel de Pescado Spanish Liver and Spanish Jerked Chicken. Other colorful recipes are Italian Herring Salad Mrs. Saxby's Chicken Salad Van Deusen's Gold Load Eureka Sponge Cake and Apple Pie Without Apples. The present copy contains additional manuscript recipes and notes on the preponderance of the twenty rear blank pages dated 1917 to 1923. They contain instruction for items such as Rosa's Wonderful Coffee Cake and Mrs. Nance's Biscuit but also comprise four pages of manuscript notes on the packing and preserving of local fruits including apricots strawberries and currants. Well used but a unique copy with numerous manuscript additions and also extremely scarce. We locate copies at Berkeley and Yale only. Free Press Book and Job Office unknown
