1776359213Printed T. Wright Essex Street Strand; and Sold by G. Kearsley No 46 near Serjeant's Inn Fleet Street London London 1776. Fourth Edition. Unbound Pages. Very Good Condition. A series of major prosecutions targets leading Jesuits and Catholic laymen Whitebread Harcourt Fenwick Langhorn and later Wakeman with three Benedictine monks accused of conspiring to kill the King. These trials form the core of the Popish Plot prosecutions driven by informer testimony and political panic. Their outcomes chart the rise and eventual erosion of belief in the Plot. 67 PAGES printed in double columns. A genuine 1776 printing taken from the authoritative Complete Collection of State Trials. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse the State Trials series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice authority and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible some pages display watermarks and the paper varies subtly in thickness all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. This particular trial report has been preserved in a modern card cover prepared for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 30 x 47 cms. 1794121657LONDON: T.CADELL 1794 LEATHER binding.Full Brown Calf boards with 5 raised bands Paper title labels. 185 x 105 mm approx. Applied head and tail bands. 2 Vols Complete. Collection of 45 sermons by Laurence Sterne Prebendary of York published following the success of a Sermon of Yorick's in Tristram Shandy. The sermons turn chiefly upon Philanthropy and kindred virtues and proceeding more from the heart than the head - per author's preface. Vol I. 300pp Sermons I to XXI Vol II. 312pp Sermons XXII -XLV. VG The work has recently undergone significant restoration by us. It was bought in dis-bound as two vols sewn up as one without the original printers plain boards. There was significant browning and water staining to some signatures. The book was pulled the worst signatures washed and the pages re-sized and the signatures re-sewn on three cords as two vols. The book blocks were then cased in new book boards in full leather as above. The washed signatures are therefor brighter. It woulds perhaps have been desirable to wash all of the signatures but the process is so time consuming it would not have been commercially viable. However the work done has at least given them a new lease of life. Please see our images of the set now offered for sale. T.CADELL hardcover

1754315<p><strong>Life expectancy</strong> is a statistical measure of how long a person or organism may live based on the year of thei birth yheir current age and other demographic factors including gender. At a given age life expectancy is the average number of years that is likely to be lived by a group of individuals of age xexposed to the same mortality conditions until they die.Mathematically life expectancy is the mean number of years of life remaining at a given age assuming constant mortality rates.Longevity and life expectancy are not synonyms. Life expectancy is defined statistically as the average number of years remaining for an individual or a group of people at a given age Longevity refers to the characteristics of the relatively long life span of some members of a population. Moreover because life expectancy is an average a particular person may well die many years before or many years after their "expected" survival. The term "maximum life span"has a quite different meaning and is more related to longevity. Wikipedia</p><p>The methodology for determining life expectncy has evolved over the years. The accuracy of the projections has a pronounced effect on both the societal and economic interests of individuals and governments. The two papers here descibe some of the work done in the 18th century to evaluate and improve the estimates of life expectancy. The two papers are:</p><p><strong>A View of the Relation between the celebrated Dr. Halley's Tables and the Notions of Mr. De Buffon for establishing a Rule for the probable Duration of the Life of Man; by Mr. William Kerssboom of the Hague. Translated from the French by James Parsons M. D. and F.R.S. </strong>London: Philosophical Transaction 1754. The preparation of statistical tables to predict life expectancy was performed by competing analysts. In this paper Mr. Kerssboom compares several tables to determine why they differ from each other.
