17781076London: Printed by Charles Eyre and William Strahan. 1778. First edition. Folio 32 x 20cm. Unbound. 2 1007-1012. Woodcut coat of arms to the title page decorative woodcut initial to the first text page text in black letter. A very good copy with just a little toning slight separation and minor wear to the left-hand margin where once bound within a larger volume. An act restoring Ireland's ability to export goods directly to the colonies in the Americas and Africa issued in the context of the American Revolutionary War and amending what became known as the Navigation Acts. Restricting the freedoms of Britain's colonies with regard to the import and export of goods the Navigation Acts had been a significant factor in fermenting rebellious discontent in America - requiring all of a colony's imports to be either bought from Britain or resold by British merchants in Britain regardless of the price obtainable elsewhere. The acts were also resented in Ireland and damaged its economy as they permitted the importation of English goods into Ireland tariff-free and simultaneously imposed tariffs on Irish exports travelling in the opposite direction. The present act removing some of these barriers demonstrates the changing nature of British mercantilism as the American Revolution progressed. London: Printed by Charles Eyre and William Strahan. unknown
1765AQ21341A Paris: De l'Imprimerie de Guilleaume Desprez 1765. 92pp. Uncut stitched as issued. Edges a trifle dusty else clean and crisp. A printing of extracts from the minutes of the Assembly of the French clergy in 1765 a meeting most notable for reiterating the episcopacy's defence of it's exemption from taxation; a statement that from a Jansenist perspective amounted to a revocation of the Declaration of 1682 which had codified the principles of Gallicanism. The tensions bolstered by this corruption of Gallicanist fundamentals together with increased opposition to monarchical absolutism would pave the road to the Revolution - an ultimately the nationalisation of all ecclesiastical property. . 8vo. 1789003915
London: T. Becket and J. Johnson 1789. 2 iii-iv 1 2-56pp; 4p. Disbound. Title slightly soiled with tea stain final leaf also slightly soiled text generally clean. Also included is a 4p leaflet with a drop-head title 'Proceedings of the Philanthropic Society relative to Mr. Robert Young'. The Philanthropic Society was set up in 1788 seemingly at the house of Robert Young. It would "seek out in the 'Augean stable of filth disease and iniquity which disgraces the Metropolis' and train-up to 'virtue and usefulness in life the children of vagrants and such who are in the paths of vice and infamy'" Whitten 'Protection Prevention Reformation: a history of the Philanthropic Society 1788-1848' page 22. However it seems that Young who also started a variety of other schemes 'mishandled' the funds raised possibly diverting the money into other schemes and by 1790 had been dismissed from the Society. The second leaflet relates to the accounts of the Society and Mr. Young's expenses and the charges of financial impropriety against him. Nine locations in ESTC the second mentioned is not located possibly not separately issued. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 8vo. Pamphlet.
T. Becket and J. Johnson paperback
