1735279042Dublin: Samuel Fairbrother 1735. Regarding an important controversy over taxation of landed Protestants of Ireland by the Clergy. Many were forced by economics to sell their lands and leave; the result of this "tythe" was threat of mass emigration to America by the remaining Protestants. A report from an ad hoc committee of the Irish House of Commons called in 1735 to consider an important question on tax burden and emigration. Irish clergy had demanded an additional income from the imposition of a tax for "agistment" pasturage of cattle on Irish Protestant landowners. The committee decided after reviewing the evidence presented in this report that the tax would "impair the Protestant interest" by causing Protestants to emigrate to America reducing the influence of the established church in Ireland. It resolved to find a "proper remedy" though it took no legal action until the Irish House of Commons was dissolved in 1800 when the parliament in London forced an abolition of the old tithes as a formality. 8 folded quarto leaves in a folded drab portfolio. 1796B402London: G. C. and J. Robinson 1796. First. Hardcover. Near Fine. This pamphlet was part of a public debate on some proposed laws to strengthen government security measures to protect King George III. including expansion of the definition and penalties for sedition. The discussion was in the context at the time that the king of France had been recently guillotined during the French Revolution. Another consideration though not directly mentioned was that King George was exhibiting signs of mental instability. An ink annotation on the title page attributes the Reply to Sir Edward Harington but this was incorrect. Harington was the author of the Remarks being replied to.

This copy is near fine in a modern binding with a white cloth spine on brown paper-covered boards with original title labels on the spine and front cover. Some scattered soiling to the text but overall it is quite clean for its age.

The work appears to be quite rare with only a single copy listed in ETSC that being in the British Library.

. The Spectator was a daily publication founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele in England lasting from 1711 to 1712. Each "paper" or "number" was approximately 2500 words long and the original run consisted of 555 numbers beginning on 1 March 1711. These were collected into seven volumes. The paper was revived without the involvement of Steele in 1714 appearing thrice weekly for six months and these papers when collected formed the eighth volume. Eustace Budgell a cousin of Addison's and the poet John Hughes also contributed to the publication. In Number 10 Mr. Spectator states that The Spectator will aim "to enliven morality with wit and to temper wit with morality". The journal reached an audience of thousands of people every day because "the Spectators was something that every middle-class household with aspirations to looking like its members took literature seriously would want to have." He hopes it will be said he has "brought philosophy out of closets and libraries schools and colleges to dwell in clubs and assemblies at tea-tables and coffee–houses". Women were a target audience for The Spectator because one of the aims of the periodical was to increase the number of women who were "of a more elevated life and conversation." Steele states in The Spectator No. 10 "But there are none to whom this paper will be more useful than to the female world." He recommends that readers of the paper consider it "as a part of the tea-equipage" and set aside time to read it each morning. The Spectator sought to provide readers with topics for well-reasoned discussion and to equip them to carry on conversations and engage in social interactions in a polite manner. In keeping with the values of Enlightenment philosophies of their time the authors of The Spectator promoted family marriage and courtesy. D. Paterson hardcover
