197780358Los Alamos New Mexico: Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory 1977. Presumed First Edition First printing. Staplebound. Good. Includes 40 pages. Illustrations. Ink notation on front cover. Stamp on back cover. Topics covered include energy storage needs; load duration curve for a typical electric utility operation; daily and weekly load variations of a typical electric power system; criteria for electric utility energy storage systems; energy storage options for large urban applications; advantage of SMES; Why Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage The SMES System; SMES Technology Development; Applications of SMS in Electric Power Systems; SMES Economics; LASL 100-MJ Experiment; and Other LASL Program Components. Superconducting magnetic energy storage SMES systems store energy in the magnetic field created by the flow of direct current in a superconducting coil which has been cryogenically cooled to a temperature below its superconducting critical temperature. A typical SMES system includes three parts: superconducting coil power conditioning system and cryogenically cooled refrigerator. Once the superconducting coil is charged the current will not decay and the magnetic energy can be stored indefinitely. The stored energy can be released back to the network by discharging the coil. The power conditioning system uses an inverter/rectifier to transform alternating current AC power to direct current or convert DC back to AC power. The inverter/rectifier accounts for about 2-3% energy loss in each direction. SMES loses the least amount of electricity in the energy storage process compared to other methods of storing energy. SMES systems are highly efficient; the round-trip efficiency is greater than 95%. Due to the energy requirements of refrigeration and the high cost of superconducting wire SMES is currently used for short duration energy storage. Therefore SMES is most commonly devoted to improving power quality.

Advantages over other energy storage methods
There are several reasons for using superconducting magnetic energy storage instead of other energy storage methods. The most important advantage of SMES is that the time delay during charge and discharge is quite short. Power is available almost instantaneously and very high power output can be provided for a brief period of time. Other energy storage methods such as pumped hydro or compressed air have a substantial time delay associated with the energy conversion of stored mechanical energy back into electricity. Thus if demand is immediate SMES is a viable option. Another advantage is that the loss of power is less than other storage methods because electric currents encounter almost no resistance. Additionally the main parts in a SMES are motionless which results in high reliability. Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory unknown

187435633London: November 16 1874. 1874. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling both sides of a sheet of black-bordered 7 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide cream paper. Signed "James Macdonell". Folded twice for mailing. Very good.
Macdonell writes to Thomas Wemyss Reid editor of the Leeds Mercury. He apologizes at length for not having answered a note from Reid which arrived while Macdonell was away in the Highlands. He goes on to describe his current busy life as a journalist mentioning "I am also gathering the material for a big book" probably his book on France. "But I have almost abandoned the hope of being able to write anything of that kind until I shall have freed myself from the shackles of my journalism."
Scottish journalist James Macdonell 1841-1879 began by writing for the Aberdeen Free Press in his native city and at the age of 22 became editor of the Northern Daily Express. He moved to London in 1865 to take up a staff position at the Daily Telegraph which he held until 1875 serving as special correspondent in France in 1870 and 1871. He became a leader writer on the Times of London in 1873. His posthumous "France since the First Empire" was incomplete at his death but yielded insights into the French politics of his time. To cut down on the number of adjournments the time control was 50 moves in 2½ hours giving some time to play off adjournments for players who finished early in the five-hour session. This appears to have been successful; only five games were adjourned in the tournament.

Reshevsky played well despite blundering in his game against Euwe Reshevsky vs Euwe 1951. Euwe finished equal second but his play was too uneven to capture first. Najdorf started slowly by drawing his first four games. Had he beaten Reshevsky in the last round Najdorf would have come first but the game ended in a draw. The remaining grandmaster in the field Fine was one of the group carrying on with daily responsibilities in addition to playing in the tournament. Hans Kmoch wrote in Chess Review "Fine's result is more of a miracle than a failure for he played the entire tournament in a state of exhaustion." This was Fine's last professional tournament.

At the closing ceremonies Al Bisno new president of the Manhattan Chess Club announced negotiations had been concluded for a match between Reshevsky and Najdorf with games to be held in both the US and Argentina. No margin notes. Illustrated with map line drawings and 4 photographic plates. Table. Reprinted for the Club from the AMERICAN MINERALOGIST 1919. From the text: "Bergen Hill is about 19 kilometers 12 miles long and 1.6 kilometers 1 mile wide comprising a range of bluffs of Triassic diabase. It commences at Bergen Point and runs behind Jersey City and Hoboken to a point in Weehawken about opposite Thirty-fifth Street in New York City. Here it comes close to the Hudson River and continues north for some 29 kilometers 18 miles to Piermont being known as the Palisades. The Bergen Hill region has long been noted as a locality for zeolites and associated minerals. When the announcement was made that the Erie Railroad Company had begun the construction of an open cut thru the hill local collectors interested in mineralogy looked forward to the collecting of fine specimens. This interest was fully justified from the history of past borings thru Bergen hill. Among the zeolites and related minerals found were: stilbite laumontite gmelinite analcite natrolite apophyllite pectolite and datolite and of common occurrence with these were quartz calcite pyrite chalcopyrite sphalerite and diabantite. While the minerals from the extrusive basalts of West Peterson Great Notch and Upper Montclair are found in cavernous openings amygdules vugs etc. the Bergen Archways minerals were confined to veins. Prehnite heulandite and thomsonite found so abundantly at the former localities were not noted tho Dana lists these minerals from Bergen Hill. A brief description of minerals found by the writer follows." This copy is from the library of scientist and author Robert B. Sosman with his tiny ink stamp. The physical chemist Robert Browning Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions there were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics."
